Eagles to get a future second and future third round pick, which they are required to trade for a currently listed player.

They trade those picks to Brisbane in return for Brandon Starcevich.

Brisbane on-trade those picks to someone - doesn't really matter who - for late picks in the 2025 draft.

Those picks are included in the points used to match a bid on Daniel Annable.

Eagles get a veteran for free.

Lions get another top five kid for free.

Everybody's happy. Or something like that.

So, four gone at the moment, another two or three waiting in the wings.

I can’t remember the last time two players from one club were traded together to another club. Let alone four. Probably need to keep it in mind with all these WC trades.
Pretty rare, but surprisingly quite a few trades involving two players or more from the one club since 2000.

AFL looking to scrap Father Son and Academy picks in the first round in the 2026 draft. This must mean one thing, we are due a player under one of those banners to come to us in 2026.
Classic.
Watch it last one or two years then revert back just in time for a *, collingwood or Geelong father son coming through

I still think the solution is to just make clubs pay more/closer to the pick the bid came in.
Father son is awesome.
someone bids on your player in the first round… you have to match with a first round pick. Simples.
Same for academy.
You have multiple players being bid on in the first round?
Find the picks or miss out.
So easy

The issue isn't that they exist it is that they are not paid for with close enough to the price of actually attaining them.

The issue has been further compounded by the off again on again approach to restricting access in the first round.

the AFL absolutely adore a bandaid.

Go further than just first round though.

Your pick has to be within five selections or so. You can't use pick 18 for a pick 1.

Then any gap in points between the player and your pick downgrades your next pick.

You get access to the player, but no assistance to get them.

I think matching with a pick from the same round would stop the absolute gift free kicks being given to already strong clubs through the likes of Daicos, the Ashcrofts, Darcy et al, going to already strong clubs, and all they have to do is cobble together a bunch of 3rd and 4th round picks to pay for it under the points system.

I would bring in something like for father-son and NGA selections, you need to match the pick with one pick from the same round, and can make up the points differential with a bunch of lower picks. For example, if you finish 1st but have a father-son selection who is called first at the draft, you need to use your pick 18, and then you can make up the points difference with other picks. If you don't have a first-round pick or don't want to use it, you miss out on the player.

Match the bid with your closest pick and make up any shortfall with the following year's 1st rd pick. Pushing it back or deleting it completely.

Mind you, the proposed new system removes bidding shenanigans. Bid on a player above his rating you're stuck with him.
