To be fair in recent years we have recruited the likes of Maley, Teakle, Hansen Jnr, Free, K.Dawson out of the state leagues.

We just have a habit of picking the wrong players.

Going after a mature half back (Bice) or half forward/wing/midfielders (Mannagh, El-Hawli, Long) would have made a lot of sense.

I'll throw into this, we've spent a few years picking from the absolute top of the draft, it's almost no surprise it's your Geelong/Sydney/Collingwood types taking the risk on these types because they invest their top end in established players and use the scraps they get back to punt on highly rated mature agers. It's a legit double dip into a pool that suits them while we're sitting in the kids pool getting our breathing right. Eventually we'll be in a spot where we don't have to get the draft bang on and start speculating a bit.

Fait point.

What I meant by "the best State League players", but didn't articulate, was players who were pretty much ready to go. All those players you listed fill a list need but none of them were "plug and play" types, they all required an investment of time for development.

Not sure why we don't consider mature age players.

probably a late 1st or early second but i reckon he should of been apart of the jhf trade
So around pick 25?

If we pursue a fourth solution to half back with such currency imma attend the AGM and scream at people.

That's fair.

Going back 4-5 years ago when we were really in the doldrums, I'm surprised we didn't go with 3-4 National draft picks, then whatever rookie list spots we had would go to mature agers who could contribute from the get-go. I was a big supporter of that approach. We kind of did do it, but we went after the wrong players like Menadue, Howe, Turner ect who were all just list cloggers. I'd prefer to go after a VFL player who has a point to prove over delisted journeyman types.

So Bergman definitely leaving and Port have advised the media his trade value.
Good luck to them. Think they'll find they don't get the only say in setting trade value for out of contract players.

We are screaming out for Sam Gibson type who can come in, know where to run, run defensively, shut down a player and provide neat skills.

We also need a centrepiece bull in the midfield. Someone who can support Parker and to protect LDU and give time for Sheeze, McKercher and O’Sullivan time to mature and make it so that if George is missing, the whole foundations of the midfield don’t collapse. This player doesn’t have to be a world beater but someone who can effectively provide pressure on the inside while dishing out neatly to our explosive types.

After that, I hope we set and forget our midfield for a while and focus on developing 2-3 good to great accountable, rebounding defenders, another couple of key forwards and 2-3 effective crumbers.

I would hope that the recruiting team could manage that over the next 3-4 years.

Tom Atkins? Out of contract this year but doubt he will leave geelong to be honest

If we got Atkins our Tackle Av per player would jump 25%. As he is so damm good in this space. He could also teach the likes of Powell/Fisher/McKercher how to stick one as well.

But yes it would be complete fantasy to think we would even think about leaving Geelong. So that being the case, have we ever used the Tackling Coach at Melb Storm or other ex-player to educate our team on how to do this? The NRL publish the amount of missed tackles/line breaks. Not sure if the AFL have something similar.

We are in the bottom 5 of total tackles made, and that list has Wet Toast, GoDees, Richmond and Dockers. 4 teams in the bottom 5, and Dockers in 8th. That’s says a lot to me about how neglectful our development has been in this area.

One of our glaring and longstanding weaknesses - tackling - and one the most underrated skills in the game.

If I was managing a young player struggling to get a kick or a regular game, I'd be telling him to tackle his guts out. A sure-fire winner.

What about spitter? I can’t think of a player who payed more effective tackles.

FUTURE PICK FLOODGATES OPEN

CLUBS will be able to trade away all of their 2026 picks with the extension of future trading to two years in advance.

Under the new rules, clubs will be allowed to trade a full suite of their future picks one year ahead as the AFL this year introduces two years' worth of future picks being up for grabs in deals.

Under the previous future trading rules, clubs would need to retain a 'full suite' of second and third-round selections in their future draft hand to be permitted to trade their future first-round pick. That caused some challenges among clubs as deals were left hanging by the need to retain picks to meet the criteria.

TRADE HUB All the latest player movement news

But with the advancement of future trading to two years, that rule now applies to the second year of future trading and no longer to the first.

For example this season, clubs will be able to trade their 2025 picks and all of their 2026 picks, but then have to carry their 2027 second and third-round selections to trade that year's first-round pick, or to trade out their 2027 second and third-round picks, they need to retain that year's first-round pick.

The AFL has kept its 'two-in-four' condition to future trading, meaning clubs must use at least two first-round picks over a rolling four-year period to be able to trade out their future first-round selections.

The extra hand of picks, plus no limits on the number of selections a club can trade one year in advance, means clubs will have far more assets to play with at the trade table this year. It is why many list bosses believe big deals can be arranged later than ever with more chips to play with and why clubs believed the AFL's call not to introduce the move last year stopped any chance of Christian Petracca being able to land anywhere as no clubs had enough assets to satisfy a deal. – Callum Twomey

A cleaner mate of mind who works at Arden street saw this fall out of a bin during the week.

Post Match Interview Guide for Clarko. Select one

  1. Carlton are a quality side with AA’s, reigning Brownlow Medalist and a Coleman winner. Their spline of McGovern, Williams and Silvagni are so professional and taught our young troops some valuable lessons. Vossy is such a shrewd tactician and is so hard to coach against.
  2. We need to grow the **** up as a football club.
  3. Great win. The team played accountable football, stuck to their roles for all 4 QTRs and showed pride in the jumper.

I think and interesting one of the free agent list is George Hewit. He's different to our current midfielders, he can do a defensive job and he runs both ways.

Anyone who disagreed with this is a ****ing moron.

Have a look at this first few quarters the bloke has smoked us out of the centre.

And has provided a tonne of defensive effort and defensive transition running.
