Now I don’t won’t to hear he won’t come. I don’t want excuses that it can’t happen. I want a can do response. What would it take to get Zak Merrett to Hardon St? :stern look
We'd have to convince Bardles, for a start, and then offer Merrett Theo's across the road and a few of the cars along with a 5m contract.

I reckon this is exactly the wrong way to think about it.

Player on downturn = flotsam. We are not a charity, regardless of what we may've implied with our acquisitions of Tucker, Howe, CCJ, Daniel, even Darling. Darling was reasonable this year because he has the heart of a ****ing lion. Not sure there are many with more ticker in this league. Spargo is tainted goods; let's leave him alone, like the other sixteen clubs seem to be doing.

Konstanty can't be done, because he really did bring a point of difference with his pressure. It was about three or four weeks in a row where oppo half-backs had an absolutely shithouse time of it, and a fair bit of it was down to him. And the forward pressure was good with him in the team.

I'm not going to make the 'he's only 20' argument because I suspect he doesn't have the skill capacity to actually fix his goalkicking woes, but he definitely gets a shot at it next year, and turfing him from the list in favour of a treacle-slow, Achilles-cooked midget is an absolutely insane suggestion

I’d be keen to hear your thoughts of jetsam.
Well he's a jet but he plays for the cannons and was a chance at a f/s until the AFL said no North F/s anymore cos we compromise the draft.

You and 2017 Brad Scott would get along well. Let's ship everyone off and start again from the ground up. Jeeze. That's exactly how we got here in the first place. Progress isn't linear, things take time. Not every player needs to be premiership ready or even play in our next one. We're not in a position to attract prime recruits, but this is improving. Impatience is warranted at the club, but progress is clearly happening. Need to be 14th before you can be 4th (and I won't hear it about Adelaide - they did something never done in AFL history, hardly a template/comparison).

We shipped off all the "training wheels" players last time, pressuring our kids to play under pressure they're not ready for. Now we need to buy guys like Lever to protect and teach kids like Dawson so he can eventually surpass him. Look at how Richmond are structured - they didn't win because of kids, they won because their best 6 players are veteran, premiership quality. They are handling the transition well by using the last years of their stalwarts. The ground-up rebuild is long dead - the game is far too professional and complex now.

The Darling and Parker recruitments are perfect examples of "training wheels" - undeniably every player around them has walked taller and played better with them in the team. Behind closed doors, I'm positive Daniel is also helping at lot - onfield he really has not been the disaster everyone makes out, he's just not the General we need setting structure. Need someone with confidence in their game like Lever/Wilkie so they can focus on other things like putting kids in a structure.

I expect a new midfield coach next year will also help our defence.
Undeniably on what evidence?
There is none, it was intended to deliver more wins and support the F1 trade with Richmond with a mid table finish. It’s failed and just prevented younger players from getting games and experience. They have to play them to justify the contracts, self inflicted list clogging IMO. The fallacy that playing talent too early ruins them was proven with GWS vs Suns list strategy, now being proven with Sheezel FOS and Colby who’ve all played from year 1. There are reasons Parker Daniel and Darling were traded…

Reading the last 9 pages after a footy free weekend and not feeling miserable heading into the office on a Monday morning has just reminded me again that following North is a mental illness.

Fascinating thread. Seems to be two camps. Those thinking keep going to the draft and building around that core group of Sheezel/FOS/McKercher/Wardlaw vs those who think it's time to bring in mature players to push for finals whilst that LDU/Xerri/Larkey/Simpkin/Zurhaar core group are in their prime.

Just building through the draft solely sounds great in theory, but completely ignores the trauma and lack of patience among the fans, players, sponsors and club that wants to move up the ladder asap and start winning games.
We can't completely blow it up and start trading LDU and Larkey and think we'll be competitive and win more games.
If you don't start progressing, then you can bet those young draftees start looking elsewhere to win games.

Maybe there's a balance in there, where you don't trade your R1 or F1 whilst we're bottom 5, unless it's for a quality player under 25 (like Crows with Rankine) that you know you will get 8-10 years out of.

Maybe you draft or trade R2/R3/R4 selections for mature players given the compromised nature of the draft.
The list would just get far too young if you don't complement the younger draftees with some mid 20's trade/FA targets.
And I'm not sure LDU and others who signed would not want to improve the best 23 as much as possible to push for a flag before they finish up.

I mean I think we overpaid for Daniel significantly. I’ll agree all day on people arguing that. Made worse looking by us trading a F1 for Matlock probably 4 picks earlier….

What I don’t agree with is Parker and Darling being undervalued by it. We have been down the path of just playing kids as have other clubs. I’ll tell you what that does. They lose week in and week out badly. They go back to their clubs and eventually loose their ability to care about losing. Look at our middle aged players who have become way to accepting of these. Other examples are Carlton durning their rebuilds, Melbourne surning their rebuild, GC for all their existence.
The biggest thing these clubs needed to do was bring in veterans and reset. We are no different. Darling has absolutely a steal for us. Players like Trembath would have been helped by him and our forward line has been the most functional it has ever been.
Parker helped in games a lot and I feel players like George will hugely benefit long term from him.
I’m not sure I’ve seen an example of a club that purely drafted their way out of this big a hole. Happy to be proven wrong though

No issue with getting Parker and Darling given the price paid and the group needed those examples given what was surrounding them from a leadership point of view. Larkey basically admitted he didn't really know how to lead.

Now I think it's fair to argue that those guys should play less games in order to give more exposure to the younger guys, but that doesn't mean they aren't valuable in how they teach and help fast track the young guys.
Luke Hodge and Birchall helped teach those young guys down back at the Lions, fair to say it's had an impact.
Even FOS' dad said Parker and Darling had been awesome for his development, so don't think it can be undervalued.
But having said that, you don't want to really repeat that again with future trades when not in the window.

When the young players like Sheeze own it and call the crap out from the older blokes, it will change rapidly.

The transition to the younger Crew, who seem to have significantly greater work ethic than many of the older blokes, will see the old blokes fall of the cliff quickly who don’t have the intensity of Jy and LDU like Fisher, Logue, Corr etc.

I thought the 50 game thing was a bit overrated but look at the way Sheeze finished the last few games.

Kerch, Hardeman, Archer, Wardlaw, Curtis Powell, Stephens, Chom, O’Sullivan, Xerri they’re all under 80 games.

When they man up, and become the standard setters, it will turn quick and it won’t be far away from 10-12 wins for us then finals contention as we add quality.

When they take over and own it, LDU, Jy, Larkey, Bull and a few others will elevate and play their role rather than having the blind leading the blind.

That’s where adding blokes like Windhager and even Young if possible is perfect, they’ll grow with this group rather than more 18yo in a weak draft.

I’d still take Lever too, to help teach that backline and bring the presence and attitude he’s always had - you can’t buy experience and he’s always been known as a hard worker.

Fourth bottom last year was 8.5 wins.
AFL “equalisation” is for the tip. We saw this year just how stark the three bands of talent on the ladder. The top 9 was set before the bye, the 10-13 band never really had a chance and was getting pummelled by the top 9, and don’t let me get started on the bottom 4. This is the product the AFL has manufactured, but not outcome it claims to be aiming towards.
