Fixture 2026 Fixture

And the ridiculous nature of the fixture is that you had 8 home games in a row against us from 2011-2018 and now we can’t even get a game in Melbourne between the two.

Maybe this is the year we double up but that thought seems to cause an error 404 for the fixture computer.
I’ve heard before about some agreement between Essendon and Melbourne. It might’ve been like Essendon hosts the game, which would bring in more Essendon members and a bigger crowd, then Melbourne gets a larger than normal % of gate receipts? Someone else may know more.

No I’m pretty certain it was due to kit clashes or some nonsense with Essendon wanting to wear the home jumper with white shorts. Could be wrong though.

The average for the three games since they made this matchup a thing (23, 24, 25) is 74,410. The average for the 10 previous matchups (excluding 2016, 2020 and 2021), is 53,899.

Only one of the previous 10 matches has drawn a crowd bigger than the 68k in 2023, and the 73k in 2024. In 2017 they got 78k, that was the first game back for all the banned Essendon players, and Roughy’s first game back as well. Essendon also played home games against the Hawks at Docklands more often than at the MCG, as recently as 2022. They wouldn’t think of doing that now.

The MCG average since 2009 is 66,890 (from 12 games). Quite impressive given the two have only made the finals in the same season twice in that time (2011 and 2014 - when they played at Marvel) and haven’t played each other in a final since 2001.

It says a lot that the rivalry is probably stronger now than it was in 2002 and 2005 despite the lack of the finals games and how much of a massive missed opportunity all those Docklands games were pre Covid — which is basically the mirror of Carl v Rich pre 2008.

I know the 150 year test will make scheduling next year difficult but Ess v Haw can mirror Carl v Rich if they stick to it. If played Carl v Rich on Thursday and Haw v Ess on the Friday there is no reason why they couldn’t have 175,000 through the gates every year.

Either you're wrong, or I imagined watching a game between the two clubs on 16th July, 2017.

Also, in the 9 home games Richmond has hosted the Suns, we've played at Marvel 3 times. Barely "always"...

Maybe instead of trying to "correct" me with your incredibly inaccurate knowledge of AFL, you can spend 5 minutes reading articles about how Richmond has been negotiating for months to "sell" our Marvel home game over the next few years to make extra money for the Punt Road development while we're rebuilding.

The first attempt was trying to sell a Richmond Home game to play GWS @ the SCG, with the Tasmanian government funding for matches in Hobart being the second choice.

Richmond's game in Tasmania is to replace the Marvel game.

That was a good idea especially if it was going to be early in the season when the Giants are nomads but the precious Swannies put pay to that.

They’ll probably have Essendon v Western Bulldogs on Sunday night, Geelong v Hawthorn on Monday, in round 1. Then round 2 they can make Hawthorn v Essendon a Sunday night game.

They say they want more Sunday night games, they’d still get 80k+ and it’s outside of school/public holidays, as long as it’s at the start of the season. Assuming they don’t have St Kilda vs Insert big Victorian club to draw a bigger crowd on the Sunday night, which I’d assume is in Round 1.

Hopefully the NRL give Storm a home game during gather round as the fixture looks boring and I'll want something to do
Hopefully it's at the MCG. I'd go regardless of who the Storm are playing since I'm definitely not going to SA for fake magic round considering they still won't schedule the back-to-back premiers at Adelaide Oval.

Jay Clark reporting Essendon v Brisbane in Round 8 on a Saturday at Marvel. I thought Round 8 was the Queensland Labour Day long weekend so would’ve been the QClash?

Cats socials had a video of Tom Hawkins as the ‘fixture manager’ and he said they’ve got North Melbourne twice. Not sure if it’s just a joke though because Jeremy Cameron will kick heaps of goals against them.

They will as V-Landy is the best Administrator in Australian sport and is a smart man wish we had some like that at my club instead of the NMFC Woke Empire.
Then our club would be in a better place.

The Storm have the last few seasons. The best decision was last year by playing the Warriors game that weekend, as it's one of the best "crowd atmosphere" Storm games of the season.

I remember that Justin Rodski did interviews last year during Gather Round suggesting that the Storm would like to host a game at either Marvel or the MCG that weekend in the future to take advantage of the "empty city"

I mean why not. So long as they use our sirens that is.

I'm almost convinced they do the entire fixture first, forget Essendon vs Melbourne and then shoehorn it either in the first 6 games or somewhere in the middle and be done with it.

Haven't played them twice since 2005 and now we play them in gather round 3 out of 4 years.

Geelong will have 4 bottom 6 double ups.

Obviously the video was intended to be a joke but I wouldn't be surprised if that part is true. Pretty sure we're playing West Coast in Gather Round because we're one of the teams playing four of the top six twice and Geelong playing a WA or NSW team in Adelaide is the only way they can make that work without making Hawthorn or Collingwood play in Geelong.

Justin Rudski said next year was unlikely to be at the G but they're definitely keen on it in future

Crazy that half the games that are later on, are more promising, and they won’t be on Ch7. I’m surprised they’re putting a second game on to clash with Dreamtime. I understand neither team are pulling up trees at the moment, but Dreamtime is an important game for what it represents.
Bizarre. Only double header acceptable is Good Friday cause it’s an arvo into a night game
