Ty Galloping until the end of 29, with a fresh contract extension. All these extensions of late give me the feeling they are structuring money across the years to make way for a Bailey deal..

At least that’s what I’m hoping.

Big leap of faith giving a first year key forward a contract keeping him at the club for another 5 years. Well deserved

Alternative view is they’re not prioritising Bailey over any other player and getting the deals done. It would be sending the wrong message if they held back signing other players while waiting for Bailey to commit.

I just feel it’s easier to spread money across the years when you have most of your list already signed up. You know exactly how much in each year you can play with.

It certainly gives the club stability. Players being out of contract in their final year is disruptive to their own form and can be disruptive to the team. Even if a player ends up requesting a trade, the noise about a trade request only seems to come up at year end.

When Bailey does resign it will be for reasons other than money. A few 100,000 here or there won't compete with the war chests on offer if money is the goal. Better to extend one we rate on smaller coin now than come into an auction at the bottom list. Love Bailey he was super entertaining in the GF, but we would have won without him.

We may not have got there without him though.
The club will offer what they can, and it will then be up to Bailey.

I don't blame any player leaving to secure their financial future. It's a job after all.
He has two premierships and with a bit of luck the Lions may get another.

Bailey was quintessential to us getting a top 4 finals berth. Replacing Kai as a killer small forward and then replacing Choc in the midfield.

Getting as many players signed past Tassie entering the competition, and being able to sign any out of contract player as an unrestricted free agent.

Brisbane Lions coach Chris Fagan has today confirmed the club won't stand in former captain Lachie Neale's way as he approaches unrestricted free agency.
The dual premiership winner is set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, with Fagan admitting he'd rather Neale stay, but the midfielder would have the club's blessing to make the move to Perth following the breakdown of his marriage and his children moving to Western Australia.
Fagan also said that Neale would likely need the next six or seven months to make a decision on his future.

As good as Neale has been, he’s pretty banged up and getting to the decline at some stage potentially quickly age. We love to have him of course but will survive without him and opens up a spot for a year improved Annable or to bring in our highly rated kid from the ‘26 draft, Murray. He’s repaid us in spades by coming to the Lions, would wish him all the best and am ok with moving on from him as sad as it would be if he leaves.

He doesn't rely on pace, so l don't think the dropoff would be as quick as someone like Cameron etc. He is still a very good trainer and player (as shown in the GF) which can only help young players when they come in and see how players like Neale train and prepare for games. I will understand if he leaves but disappointed as he improves our team when he is in there.

He’s been banged up because we’ve had to flog him every single year he’s been with us.

I don’t think many teams flog their 32yr old mids as we have Neale. I’d expect his schedule for the remainder of his time with us will be substantially different to previous years so he is primed for September.

Kane Cornes probably saying what most here are thinking…

It is always a challenge to make space in a champion team for the new blood coming through, and for club champions to find the right time to move on. It is incredibly sad what has happened, but purely from a footy perspective it helps with the transition to have Lachie likely leaving at season end.

there's always the possibility neale just decides to retire. he will be 33 this year - as good as he has been and still is its a perfectly reasonable time to pull the pin, especially if he has any injury issues this season.
He will probably need the $$ now so will have to play on if he can get a gig.

Sad but true, looks like they are at the stage where the lawyers are already there. Lachie is facing loosing 75% of the assets and then he will loose 28% of his gross income paid as nett for the next 16 or so years in child support. Someone will have done the numbers with him by now and the initial realisation is a jolt. (been there done that) There are ways to soften the blow but if they have $3 million is assets consider $2.25 mil of that is gone (the family home and some superannuation). If he earns $1 million a season Jules will be getting $228,000 of that in child maintenance then the tax comes out, say another $400k. She gave up her work to move to Brisbane so there is likely to be some spousal maintenance as well. His lifestyle will change dramatically and chasing a big payout doesn't really help, the percentage split is the same. Being back in WA and having joint custody helps him but I'd be saying right now he and his management are thinking about the next 16 years or so, what he is going to do after football. In no way am I saying the divorce laws are unfair or he shouldn't have to pay, just saying when he sits at the kitchen table with his lawyer and see the numbers, there is a new reality.

I'd be devastated to see Lachie go from a football perspective.

He's a champ and has the type of mindset where he's going to keep producing longer than people expect.
Agree, he has certainly inspired our players to be better.

Seems the speculation has begun from Victorian clubs to the media if Bailey can be lured out of Brisbane. No indication if he'll re-sign or not in the article.

“We’ve got an offer on the table to Zac; we’ve been in discussion with his management group (Mac's Sports), who does a great job for him,” Daly confirmed.
...
“We are under no illusions that it will probably be around the mid-season break before we ramp up the talks,” he said.
“I’m hoping it’s before that and they come to us and say he’s staying, but we are under no illusions that it might draw out for a little bit of time and get towards somewhere near the bye.”
