wallabies taken by rugby can't do that, wombats are not strong enough image, echidnas cool idea but not strong enough, platypuses love that idea, as much is like the kookaburras idea that is an NSW thing, and other than that there is already enough bird teams no more bird teams so platypuses would be good but not as strong as rams, and for the "feminists" who may complain the Brisbane female team still goes by lions with the same logo despite lioness being the right term for a female lion and there would also be no mane but I haven't seen anyone throw a stink about that
also, Kookaburras is taken by the field hockey team, and cockatoos isn't used, apparently was the name of AUS NZ women's soccer team but nothing else but I stand by my statement of enough bird teams, cockatoos aren't a stong image either

You’re speaking a lot of sense here. A Ram is an iconic mascot and is connected to the footy heritage in that region. I live in Brisbane and know quite a few people who support the women’s team, no one has ever mentioned that about the Lions.

Just found a precedent too. Derby County FC are the Rams. Their women’s team is known as the ‘Ewe Rams’.

as I said I've done plenty of research and logically and in many other points Rams is the best option, I don't think keeping the Rams name for the women's team will be an issue no local women's teams haven't changed anything either its because they want to keep a streamlined brand in this scenario its good but with the VFL it wasn't killing the Casey scorpions and box hill mustangs brands to align with their AFL affiliates

After spending an hour on it, asked ChatGPT about candidates for a 20th AFL team.

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, discussions about a potential 20th team in the AFL (Australian Football League) were ongoing, but no official decisions had been made. The selection of a location for a new AFL team involves a complex process that considers various factors, including market potential, infrastructure, financial viability, and geographic spread. The AFL Commission and relevant stakeholders would be responsible for making such decisions.
While there has been speculation and discussion about potential cities or regions for expansion, it's important to note that these are not official announcements, and the landscape may have evolved since my last update. Some cities that have been mentioned or speculated as potential candidates for a new AFL team include:
  1. Gold Coast, Queensland:
    • The Gold Coast already has an AFL team, the Gold Coast Suns, but there has been discussion about the potential for a second team in the region.
  2. Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT):
    • Canberra is the capital city of Australia and has been mentioned in discussions about potential AFL expansion due to its status as the political and administrative center of the country.
  3. Geelong, Victoria:
    • Geelong is a city in Victoria with a strong football tradition and an existing AFL team, the Geelong Cats. However, there has been occasional discussion about the potential for a second team in the region.
  4. Western Sydney, New South Wales:
    • The Greater Western Sydney Giants already represent the Western Sydney region, but discussions about potential expansion in the broader Western Sydney area have taken place.
  5. Northern Tasmania:
    • If Tasmania were to become the 19th AFL team, there could be further discussion about a potential 20th team in another location.
It's important to emphasize that these mentions are speculative, and any decision to introduce a 20th AFL team would involve a comprehensive evaluation process by the AFL Commission. The landscape of Australian rules football can change, and official announcements from the AFL should be consulted for the latest information on expansion plans and potential team locations.

Would a second GC, Geelong or Tasmania team be a better idea than Darwin?

ChatGPT has absolutely no idea. Who would have thought?

Really a team that has never made the top 8 getting a second team against them won't help I'll say it again it should have never been the Suns it should have been Southport

Geelong has no top-tier pro sporting teams outside of the Cats, they should focus on getting more top-tier teams also we have enough vic teams

GWS really do need to focus on all of western Sydney they should do that to make way for a Canberra AFL side

A reason why it took so long for Tassie to get a team was because of the heavy divide of Tassie AFL with teams folding and going from the top league the current league isn't too good with most teams being based on one side you need to keep them united one team just like the Jack Jumpers and that has been a massive success and the Hurricanes before them, keep doing this with more and more sporting teams, soccer, baseball etc

Would Hobart City Devils (from North Hobart Demons) wearing Red and Green versus Launceston Greens (from Blues) wearing Green and White work as a rival? If population was sufficient that is.

I personally think they need a Tassie team with its own identity with no links to local teams they can honor them and have links to the Tassie Devils teams like the Jackjumpers a new side is the best way to get support because it is catering to everyone not just those supporters its just awkward for all those other tassies that don't like them teams and, north hobart too similar in colours and name to the dees won't work just need marron yellow and green one team to represent tassie footy as a whole

as strong as rams, and for the "feminists" who may complain the Brisbane female team still goes by lions with the same logo despite lioness being the right term for a female lion and there would also be no mane but I haven't seen anyone throw a stink about that

A gender neutral name is about making sure a new AFLW team isn't just an afterthought. The Lions have had their name since 1957, they most definitely weren't thinking of a women's team back. Tasmania and Team 20 will be the first teams with brands created with the AFLW in mind. Canberra really gets behind women's sport. I wouldn't be surprised if they had the highest proportion of their fanbase engaged with the women's team.

The Lions and Rams also aren't exactly comparable. The lion is the species, lionesses are still lions, so it's not wrong to have a female lion. And while the Lionesses are a nickname, they're still officially the Lions. There are no female rams. You could call the women's team the Ewes or Sheep, but they're both terrible.

Not going to lie, that guernsey design would look pretty good too. I’m contradicting what I said earlier about bird mascots, but your Owls suggestion is as good as any I’ve heard.

Thanks. I know the birds mascots are a bit overdone, but I think Owls stands out amongst them. You've got your birds of prey (Eagles, Hawks), and corvids (Crows, Magpies), but Owls are relatively unique (minus Sheffield Wednesday).

And Owls are capable of killing Eagles and Hawks.

It'd be really annoying if the best name of the rams got past over coz of a bloody W team that nobody cares about, but I can see that most likely happening with political correctness being high on the agenda.

I wouldn't say that nobody would care. Canberra loves women's sports. Manuka has had the majority of GWS' largest AFLW crowds. The Raiders get some of the highest NRLW crowds. It might be too "politically correct" for you, but that's the way Canberra leans. I honestly think an AFLW team in Canberra would give the current Giants' men's Sydney crowds a run for their money.

Rams also presents the problem of what to do with the state team name. You can't have the Rams in both. It'd be a bit like calling West Coast the Sandgropers or Adelaide the Croweaters when they entered.

I think though W sports tend to be theatre goers. Parents that think it's good for their daughter to see female athletes competing, which it is, but with no real interest in the machinations, statistics etc. It's why W sports get minimal online traffic.

With regards to the state team, are you referring to under 18s? The Tasmania team will have the same situation but I haven't heard any complaints there.

The rams is such a powerful symbol, I love the l.a rams name, design etc. But Canberra has the added bonus of the rams letters indicating all the southern nsw catchment areas, so you wouldn't then have to call the team Canberra snsw. It gives the benefit of promoting the team in Canberra as an only Canberra team, but promoting the team in snsw as the rams representing their area.

I would structure Tassie a bit differently to that. The biggest clubs down there are still small compared with state league clubs in SA, WA etc and the population bases of the cities are small as well so it wouldn’t make sense to promote one local club and alienate all other supporters.

In Tassie there are three main regions, each with their own footy comps and histories - South, North and North West. The South has about 55% of the population (heavily centred on Hobart). North and NW the remaining 45%. Launnie is the biggest city there, but the population in the north of the state is more decentralised.

There’s a strong tradition of regional representative football between these three regions. In the photo, the South guernsey is blue and gold, N black and white, NW gold and maroon. If Tassie ever had the population to justify two teams (it never will, which is why BigChippa52 is absolutely right), I reckon it would make sense to have one team called ‘Hobart’ to rep the South and another, ‘Northern Tasmania’ based in Launceston and also playing some games on the NW coast to rep the other two regions.

The TSL is being scrapped after this year and all state league clubs are going back into regional comps. This will create a vacuum for the state’s best players. Therefore, I would like to see the AFL club (Devils), underpinned by two VFL clubs. An AFL-aligned club based out of Hobart and a non-aligned club based at Utas Stadium in Launceston.

That way there’s more opportunities for the state’s best players to play at a high level and not have to relocate to other states for further opportunities. Ditto with players from the North and NW not having to relocate to the south of the state.

I would call this team the Northern Tasmania Brewers. People from the North and NW are united with their preference for Boags beer, who could also be a major sponsor. Have attached a copy of a guernsey design for this club (combo of both regional guernseys). Like I said, a second Tassie side is a pipe dream, but if the unthinkable happens and there was a population boom then a side like this would be a natural rival for a Hobart-based side (the Tassie Devils could become Hobart Devils), while the Brewers would be a good chance of getting widespread support from the other half of the state.

In saying this, the club they’re establishing now is perfect. A way to unite the whole state behind one team playing in state colours. That’s why I think that if a team like the Brewers was created it would be best for them to just remain in the VFL as a standalone like Port Melbourne.

It's a really cool concept, but yes, I don't think there'll ever be two teams in Tasmania.

The next three after Tassie should come from ACT-Riverina, WA3, and Brisbane 2-Sunshine Coast.

If I was going to add another two teams after that, I'd be looking at New Zealand and Sydney 3-Newcastle, two largest untapped populations left to tap into. Newcastle on their own is probably risky but a 3 game membership partnership with the northern area of Sydney could work.

There'll be popular demand for SA3 if WA3 ever gets in just because it's a footy state, but if population growth matters, then I don't see it being as viable as some say.

I'm not saying the Rams isn't a clever name that ticks most of the boxes, but the one box it doesn't tick could leave a sour taste in the mouth.

I think you and I disagree on the importance of AFLW. Especially in a market like Canberra. I expect the AFLW to grow and become an increasingly important part of each club. I'd say the AFL wants the same so would probably veto a name like the Rams.

Personally, I actually see Canberra's AFLW team entering early as a soft launch, growing the brand and fandom before Manuka is big enough for a men's team.

I'm also a bit bitter about the Rams abandoning St Louis. How could they?!

I was trying to play around with other potential acronyms. If anybody can make a mascot out of Rascals, that's the best word I could make fit (Riverina, ACT, South Coast, Albury).

Obviously, I'd still support the Canberra Rams, but it'd be well down the list of my preferred options.

Riverina Albury Canberra

It's even yellow and blue and WA based, I'm sure Eagles supporters wouldn't be mad at all.
