100 games is only 4 years including finals. Guy isn’t thirty yet, ffs.
 
Just a warning, prepare to be disappointed by his "elite" kicking.

Love this pick up!
Ever since I saw him play for Frankston in the VFL, the year he won the Fothergill medal I saw a player who displayed natural AFL level tendencies, neat disposal, great intercept marker playing as a loose man in defence and was hard at it.
Been keen for us to get him since then. Has a bit of mongrel in him aswell which we need.
Similar skillsets to a Nick Malceski but tougher.
Here is a nice article of him when he was rookie listed (Had longer hair back then so stood out even more).

Both, but moreso the overconfidence and decision making is iffy for him.

He can still pull off some ripping kicks and his goalkicking is accurate if he gets a sniff, but I always thought Swans fans overrated him just because the rest of our team can't kick for crap so he stood out when he did do some good things.

Given what he gave up from him there will certainly be blindspots in his game that we'll need to work out (and work with), but from what I've seen it's nothing too detrimental.

At worst he should be a solid contributor, which I guess is exactly what he was at Sydney.
 
For some reason this passage of play - IMO his most impressive didn't make the highlight reel from the Carlton FC website highlights package.

This shows hard running ahead of the play (as a defender nonetheless), an understanding of where to position ones self around the contest, the smarts and agility to be able to stop on a dime, then sell the foot candy on the presumed pass into the corridor, then the poise to straighten up and nail it on the angle. Made a sprightly 19 yr old, Andrew McGrath look stupid there. Got Hugh Jackman up and about too!

I'm sure as hell Shaw, O'Shea, Mullet and even Byrne are not capable of this. Come to think of it how many of our best 22 have you seen with this type of poise and cool head around goals...

Don't think any of the above were exactly known for kicking sausage rolls either so no reason he can't play stints up forward.



More than just depth I think.

What is one of the absolute requirements we have screamed out for? Small lock down backman? Is this Newman, we shall see, but a guy at 25 with a good left and from the Sydney system for sweet FA.

Interesting that you say this - and I'm not saying you're wrong becauseI haven't watched highlights and don't know the guy from a bar of soap - but feedback on his 2018 year from the swans board sees the word 'lazy' come up quite a bit.

I'm hoping that whatever the issue was this year, we can help him with it. The swans board were also convinced he was gonna be a gun in 2017. Extremely contrasting seasons.

I like Newman and think he will be good for us, but im still torn about trade tactics in general. Newman is ooc and wanted to come to us, so why are we trading? Nic goes to the PSD and we get our future 4th to trade or use. Same situation with Thurlow to the Swans and GHS to the Suns.

Just like the Mcadam trade, i think we could have done slightly better. In Mcadams case, i think we should have kept our 5th and given that for Newman.

So not unhappy, i am a little concerned with our lack of draft assets this year aside from pick 1 and next yer only having a 1st and 2 3rds.
