Past #3: Jed Anderson - delisted end '22 - 89 NMFC games - go well Jed

Sounds a bit far fetched, but what about the fact Hawks have a multitude of class ball users by hand and foot.
We have a couple. Could be our lack of real class level training that's seen this kids skills go a bit backwards too.
You play how ya train.

My logic and i assume that of the club is/was purely points based. With so many clubs looking to trade down for points last year it was an obvious move. Thus i quantify cost purely as points spent and recieved.

Out - 1332 points
In - 894 points
Jed - 438 points - Pick 40

Snowroo I normally love the stuff you write, but the minute our trading is done solely on points and selection point worth, I will just jump ship man, seriously, explain to me how pick value works with good and bad draft pools.

Is pick 7 in a good draft worth the same points as pick 7 in a bad draft?

Is just what last year was made into due to the rules. This year won't be anywhere near as bad.

Jed would have been a 2nd any other year, but once the Hawks added in those other 2 picks it was an easy deal to move 15, knowing full well we would get back into the 1st round.

Don't like it and agree with different years being different, but points for academies was all 2015 trade week was about. Pure numbers game!

Actually feel for clubs who traded for future picks expecting things to be the same this year that they now cant use in the same way.

He has been injured effectively since he was drafted in 2013
Hawthorn knew he wasn't going to break into their team even as a second string back up
Hawks then put together an average highlight package and cast out the bait
North took it and payed overs for a kid that was probably going to be delisted by the Hawks if they couldn't find a sucker

Are you honestly that simplistic in that you really think that's all that would be needed to get a team of professional recruiting staff to draft a player from another club? You are completely deluded mate - that analysis is so rudimentary it's laughable. Cam and the team would have watched him for years and knew exactly what they were after when they went for him.

From what I understand, and I'm no recruiter, he was a pre-listed GWS priority player and was captain of the NT junior team - a very highly rated junior that Hawthorn got in a trade for a senior player they were happy to move on.

Now, Jed moved on for opportunity, because "when he looked at things practically, he knew Cyril Rioli, Luke Breust and Paul Puopolo were going to be hard to push past for quite a while yet. And so, nervously, he asked Alastair Clarkson if he could have a look around."

Upon having a look around, the Hawthorn recruiting manager states, the "highly talented player" attracted some interest from eight clubs!

To summarise, we have a pre-listed, stand out junior (which doesn't garuntee success admittedly - just ask Taylor Hine!) in one of the best teams of all time, who is still young, looking to move on, who chose our club over many others and who has many traits our team is crying out for - speed, hardness, youth and leadership. Apparently his skills are good when fully fit too - time will tell on that one, as they haven't been great to date - he'll admit that.

But what I can tell you for sure is - your simplistic take on the whole process is so far off the mark it is utterly ridiculous.

Quoted for accuracy. Brilliant post.

We paid too much for Jed.

Thankfully, the Lions paid too much for Basti.

Q: Would I rather Jed or Basti on our list?

A: Jed.
I still don't mind the Jed trade. In the end we didn't give up that much for him.
...and I feel like we got crazy value in the draft for the picks we had...early, but imo total opposite to the previous year.
2015 draftees will easily be alot better than 2014 imo.

These prove my simplistic take on the reaming Hawthorn gave North
He wasn't good enough for Hawthorn,if the Hawks thought he could play a role at the club he would still be there

Also that they shopped him around and North were prepared to take the worst reaming, obviously the other seven clubs are smarter than North
The rest of your wall of text reads like a tanty

lol the criticism of Jed is laughable.. It's been one injury ravaged year

There are first round draft picks on our list right now who have been here years playing deplorable football

I think you're employing a fair amount of self delusion with that analysis ;)

In the words of Dean Laidley, 'Yeah, nah'.

... Our recruiting staff were 'baited by a highlights package'. Do you stand by that one?

On the argument about him not being good enough at the Hawks and us taking a reject. How did that work out with the Swans and Kennedy? mcglyn? And the many other players they've built a team around from elsewhere.

No tanty at all. All though I can understand the shock you might get with a well reasoned argument backed up by quotes, facts and references. Given the lack of actual info you provide - it must be very foreign concept.

So much arguement in the difference between the words used and cost here.

We USED or 1st(15) and 3rd(55) round picks to get Anderson and picks 34 and 40
We USED picks 34 and 40 to get pick 17

Net result

Anderson COST us pick 40 in equivelent points.

If i had a $50 note and an apple
and wanted an orange
so bought an orange USING my $50 note
getting $38 change
Then swapped my Apple and $38
for a $50 note
didn't the orange COST me my apple?

What did i USE to get the orange?
and
What did the orange COST?
are
2 very different things.
I wish I had my folder of gifs handy so I could insert some applause or something witty indicating my sincere appreciation of this post.

Hawks then put together an average highlight package and cast out the bait
Again my gifs folder would be handy. That one with Jennifer Lawrence going "ok, yep". Cos our recruiters don't have time to watch players or analyse their performances.

But the lions didn't pay too much for Basti. They were always getting Hipwood and Keays and it didn't matter which picks the points came from.
