AFL Player 31: Zach Reid - currently not injured - 13/12

Really excited to see what Reid can do. He has the frame to develop into an absolute man-mountain. Unfortunately though, most of the content I've read regarding Reid is about him being in the modified group. Hoping he can get a good run at it this year 🤞

When you read that he could be the best of those three top 10's and he has been restricted by injuries / form its unfortunate.

Reid no longer under an injury/illness cloud (first time in forever). Will play a half in the VFL this weekend :)

In the video also said it’ll be a 3-4 week build up. So no AFL yet, chill 😬 (after glandular fever, stress fracture in his back and then his foot issue I don’t think anyone was actually expecting him back straight away, given he’s barely been able to train…)

In positive news, young key defender Zach Reid will play his first game in 2022 after overcoming multiple injuries.

Since his AFL debut in round five against Brisbane last year, the 2021 No.10 draft pick has unfortunately battled glandular fever, stress fractures and a foot injury.

Murphy said he was looking forward to the highly talented 202cm defender returning to play in the VFL Bombers’ round two clash against Casey on Saturday.

“It’s a really anticipated return for Zach Reid,” Murphy said.

“He had that back injury and the end of last year which has been the main injury.

“Then he had a little bit of foot soreness that we had to manage. He’s built his loads back up and he’ll play about half a game in the VFL, so it’s really exciting for him to be back out there.”

Reminder that Voss is 6’4” alongside Reid in that picture.

Hurley and Fletcher doing a lot of work with him at training and on gameday places him in really good stead.

Excited to see how he goes and how he moves given it looks like he's about a foot taller and doubled his bodyweight since last year.

A couple of pretty good defenders to learn from there!

Fletcher in particular, no one better to teach him how to use his reach to his advantage and not get drawn into a grapple.

Both will be valuable, Hurley was the primary organiser of a very good defence for a time and sees the game very well.

Reid looks monumentally huge. I was thinking bigger than 202cms.

Will take a few more years to fill out that frame.
AFL heights are all over the joint. Different “official” heights often differ (club, league, different guides etc) and then there’s other sources too.

I think once upon a time they were actually measured annually but now it seems like they take a measurement at draft camp and most of them are never updated beyond that - though some clearly are.

Reid is listed at 202, he’s standing next to Phillips in this years team photo, who is listed at 201. There’s not a heap in it but it’s pretty clear that Phillips actually looks taller.

A little while back I tried to find out how tall Ridley was and found about three figures. They seem to have settled on 195 which is certainly taller than he was reported a few years ago.

Player profiles that appear on club websites seem to be somewhat centralised and the images and stats should all match up with the AFL websites and apps. Same images are used in Foxtel graphics as well, so it seems. Usually the heights get updated once a year after photo day so I assume that’s when that gets done.

I am however lately amused that McGrath and Parish are listed at 180, Hird is 182, and Merrett is listed as 179. So Merrett is our shortest mid. 🤔 doesn’t seem right when the other two are constantly spoken of as too small.
