A lockdown dour defender would be nice.
doctors orders
i interceptors i think we have in Ridley, Francis, possibly Reid and Cox.
Laverde reads the play well, but he's often reading it then looking for whoever isn't manned is going to take the ball

If Brand enters the conversation as a Stewart replacement, could be handy.

It's tough because he rarely takes the best forward (as that's usually Zerk), who also takes a bunch of intercept marks.

I've rewatched the game against Casey.

He wasn't in a lot of 1v1 defensive contests but I was really impressed with his movement.

He's got a really big rig. Last year he was really struggling to move but it seems he's grown into it and moving freely.

He was a very good defender as a junior. I look forward to seeing him play this year.

From memory wasn't he talked up as being one of the best 1v1 defenders over the preseason, if not the best?

Cody Brand

Key stats: 11 disposals, three marks, one tackle

"He was competitive again in the air, but it was a strange game for our backs because Frankston played pretty small and moved us around a bit with their ball movement. 'Brandy' has been practising his intercept marking and coming off his direct opponent, but didn't get a lot of opportunities to do that this week. He had to play on a guy who was a fair bit smaller on him, so it was good for him to learn how to play on different players. He hurt himself late in the third quarter but carried on and has pulled up OK."

Cody Brand

Key stats: 13 disposals, four marks

"'Brandy' was a little bit off compared to the last couple of weeks. His man got out on him a couple of times, which was unusual because he's had a good start to the year. He knows exactly what he did and how it happened, so he'll work on that during the week."

Cody Brand

Key stats: Eight disposals, three marks, two tackles

"'Brandy' played well this week. He was coming off a quieter game from the week before and just got back to some of his better positioning. Defensively he was really strong for us and killed a lot of the aerial contests."

Cody Brand

Key stats: Eight disposals, four tackles, two marks

"'Brandy' battled on all day. He got a knock early unsettled him a bit, but he pushed through well. He worked well in the air with Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Cian McBride as our deepest defenders. He got caught out a couple of times on the lead, but set up well most of the time. Overall, not a bad game from Cody."

Didn’t watch it but the 8 marks is just as impressive. As the 22 disposals.

Means he’s getting into position to help out the team defence or working hard into space. Either way, a great showing in an under sieged defence.

Cody Brand

Key stats: 24 disposals, nine marks, two tackles

"'Brandy' won his most possessions in a game to date. He found himself joining in our attacks more, which was pleasing to see. He's more of a dour defender, but he took some marks and was able to set up our attack. The last couple of weeks he's defended well, so overall it was a pretty solid game."

Cody Brand

Key stats: 10 disposals, two tackles, one mark

"It was another solid game from 'Brandy'. He's defending quite well and he worked in well with Cian (McBride), until Cian went down. Stewart came in as well, and that defensive trio was really solid."

Would be close to his best game for us, also I've never noticed how far he can kick the footy till today.
I reckon he's a genuine chance to play in the AFL team before the season ends.

Hes a guarantee to debut this year

Only injury would prevent us from developing him at the top level considering where we are at

Also almost puts a line through Francis getting into the 22 as a defender and hes behind the 3 tall forwards aswell

Whether Lav, Reid, Brand, Ridley and Kelly can co exist in the same backline in 2023/24 is the question

Allowing Lav to play on the 3rd tall/dangerous resting mids will be a huge bonus.
