There's a few different issues wrapped up in one giant clusterfeck here:
1. How lazy are the 4 players? Firstly, yes it's a pathetic, childish and ridiculous request. But these guys are getting paid a ton of cash, they have plenty of free time, doing what management wants is not difficult. You just do it and tell yourselves in private "he's a complete Moo".
No it wasn't.

Tend to agree. I would like to think there has been more going wrong and this was just the straw that broke the camels back. Watson and Clarke especially appear to be lazy sooks who act like they are entitled to a position on their talent only. Hopefully Patti learns as for Usman I am disappointed he has blown an opportunity.
You mean Johnson.

Agree there is much more to the story but unless someone at the source decides to spill the beans we'll never really know.

Pretty much nobody here knows the players personally or knows what actually has been going on, but there have been some fairly wild allegations and opinions flying about. (I know this is BF )

Most assessments of the players' characters go on appearances alone, not a very accurate method of judging what they might really be like.

I kind of get where you were going, but sorry I can't let this go.

By every account I've ever read or heard (including talking with former players and officials) Ponting is regarded as THE most selfless team oriented player of his generation.

Whatever you may have thought of his on field tactics, his teammates would walk over hot coals for him and he for them.

I liked Ponting & always did since he was in the Tas team before making it to the Australian team.

I think what I'm trying to say is the trajectory of the leadership towards the best batsmen in the team as against the most suited regular to skipper the side.

Its arguable that Punter was a great leader, but had the likes of Warne, Gilly, Huss, etc to assist.

What worries me is since Punter has had to step down, after going on too long, we are now inexperienced & in disarray.

I thought Clarke is wrong person to have in charge, but in the last 12 months it seemed he had grown up.

I think now he just pretended to.

He's fallen out with many players, Katich, Hussey, & it wood seem Watto.

And it looks like the whole side has been underperforming maybe due to the wrong leader.

I think the powers that be have got it wrong with the captaincy & leadership of the current team.

nb: if you want to teach players to behave a certain way, teach them as they are coming into 1st class cricket. Not when on test duty.

Its ridiculous.

he struggles to focus on both his own form
How could you possibly say that Clarke struggles with his own form? Yeah, sure, he might be a twat, I don't know. Struggles to focus on his own form... no, and nothing in the last 18 months could suggest that. Neither would his test average of 53 show this.

arthur has lost the players like he did with the south africans. he's really only got one supporter in the team and that's clarke. if they lose 5-0 in the ashes and that's odds on right now, he'll be shown the door
How much would you bet at even money. It's not "odds on". FFS, India are only $1.90 to win the NEXT TEST (jump on incidentally, easy money IMO)

I
Waugh wanted to keep his old Baggy Green, grime & dirt, wrinkled & tattered as a badge of Honour.

Ponting wanted clean shirts.
What a shocking example. This is Ponting's Baggy green:

Hardly spick and span.

Alternative options for captain:
Watto: yeah, that would work out just great , and that's when he's not injured/ averaging above 26 over the last 2 years and playing as a batsman.
"Davey" Warner: Better less said.. played 15 tests
Patto: yeah, nah. Played 9 tests, injured/rotated every second test
Therest of the team couldn't even be confident of staying in the XI for a prolonged period

Or bring in someone specifically as captain, who isn't in the side at present.

Which is something we used to laugh at England for doing.

Matey, I said both. As in, can he concentrate on his own game and form, while also concentrating on everyone else's?
Oh, OK. I read it as he struggles on both things individually. E.g. he's bad at both batting and bowling, doesn't mean he's bad at both at the same time, but as individual things. Sorry about that

why weren't the management more stricter in the firsat place. why wait until we are 2-0 down and looking like a bunch of drop kicks. why not stop it before it gets out of hand. the management of this team is farcical

Maybe they tried.

And now they have to take up the kid gloves

I am baffled as to how this has become a question of Clarke's leadership. Has anyone here ever done anything wrong? Or has it always been someone else's fault?
I'm not baffled.

Around here, something goes wrong in Australian cricket = Clarke's fault.

Whats funny is that if Watto was in form no one would give a shit.

Watto, despite his shit form for nigh on 2 years, shits all over anyone coming through state cricket.

No he doesn't...he should have been made to go back to state cricket and pile on runs before he got back this time nd I reckon he would have battled

Talented players are always just one innings away from being back in form. Cricket Australia has stuck with him through injury after injury cause they know he has all the tools in his locker and are desperate for him to get back to his best because our state cricketers are so weak atm.

Ponting was well and truly finished as an international cricketer. He stayed on too long in retrospect. Saying he was 'shown the door' and implying he didn't deserve to go is crazy revisionist history.

That's my whole point.... Ponting is a legend, love the bloke. Carried by the team for his final 2 or so years, couldnt score at all. Comes back to state cricket and kills it.
