Can someone explain the rationale behind Johnson not playing VFL at all and Harry Rowston playing seemingly full game time this afternoon?

Johnson played 25% game time last night and Rowston played 22%.

Yet another example of a missed opportunity for our kids to actually play.

Not if our logic behind Johnson being the sub is trying to manage his workload a bit being a first year guy and not having a full preseason.

Would be a bit silly to try and manage/limit his workload by making him the sub, then have him play vfl anyway the next day.

This, I'd guess

Johnson plays for EFC - assume injured.

Essendon fans "Why can't we manage our players properly to avoid injury"

Also essendon fans
"Why is this 18 year old, who missed large chunks of the preseason, on managed minutes after a longer than expected stint in the seniors  "

If he’s selected in the seniors you are accepting he is capable of playing 80%+ game time if an injury occurs early doors. See last week.

He’s either good to go, or not good to go, if you are truly managing minutes you do so at VFL level where there are no stakes and larger benches.

I dunno if you've missed it but the club is running on fumes, so whilst it'd be nice to give Zac a full game, him breaking down is seemingly no good for anyone

furthermore, no one at VFL level is playing the role Zac has done at senior level (bar the returning Jayden Nguyen who should get a crack at senior level by years end imho)

Again, named in the seniors.

They’ve named him, if you’re not playing him to avert injury then he shouldn’t be playing anywhere, if he’s good to go then he’s good to go.

This is not the first time the sub or carry over emergency/ emergencies could have played but didn’t.

The secret third option is him or someone else has an undisclosed injury from last night and we are covering, that actually makes the most sense, because nothing else does.

You can still manage his work load as sub even if he does have to come into the game early. The trade of is if he plays 3/4 then you have a lighter training week and you Can still limit his game time to 40-50 percent.

he looked really good at the start of his run but more than Clarke the demands of senior footy started to take its toll on him. He did have a very interrupted pre-season so thats understandable, we have something to work with though!

I want to see him play another game or two in the AFL, if only because I think he'll be mostly VFL next year.
i think he's lowkey surpassed some of our key players - i'd rather his kicking out of the backline presently than redman's if i could chose.

Would not be betting he is VFL next year. I would be thinking more along the lines of Roberts.

You may well be right - I don't think he's in the 22 yet at full strength, personally - but then, our back line especially is seldom at full strength. I feel like he's one they're going to take their time with and bring along slowly

Not really fussed if he spends the rest or the season in the VFL. He got a good look at the level. He knows what he has to work on.
It annoys me as when Martin went down, felt he seemed the ideal candidate to fulfil the extra kicking duties. quarterback role where we try and get the ball into his hands. more so this week without Merrett also.
I rate him top 3 at efc in regards to kicking and spatial awareness - knowing where team mates and opposition players are, which player to give it to next in the chain etc.

kids a stud, get as many games into him as possible to finish the szn. Give him the Nic Martin role next year

He hasn't got the tank for that. It's one reason he's not playing at the moment while a lot of the other young guys still are. Nic Martin is also arguably the fittest guy on our list.

Johnson's showing some good signs. But he's a couple of preseasons away at the very least from having that sort of tank.
