I've mentioned a few years. Unfortunately that's where we are at right now but we have a huge chance IMO to draft guns for the future and become a great team in 3-4 years. I see us challenging the 8 in 2027. Then we will get the icing for a few FAs who will want to come to us. We can only achieve building elite talent in the next 2 years and then going for the 8.How patient, though? We've been in this hole since 2017, and in what year do you realistically think we'll be playing finals again? 2026? 2027?
At some point we have to stop looking at what we might be able to do at some unspecified point in the future and start actually achieving something.
This is not particularly about Cameron Zurhaar, it's more about the strategy involved. The one comment that comes up most often is the need to have experienced players to shield the young players as they develop. The next most common comment is that we should be turning out experience players because we might get a decent draft pick in return. Do we not see how illogical this is?
Zurhaar is far from perfect, but the last thing we need right now is for experienced players to walk out the door. If it means we pay him a couple of hundred grand more than he's worth each year, so be it.
The only player IMO in the next year that I don't want to let go or be traded is LDU. It would hurt compared to CZ. I don't mind getting a Boak/Pendles/ Ward for a year next year to set standards for the young guns. The senior players that we have right now are terrible.
Getting back to CZ, he will be 27 in a few weeks. He won't be part of our next premiership and I don't like the idea of him using our club to get more money when we gave him the opportunity as a rookie. He can GTFO. Would you rather pay CZ $850k (a few hundred grand more as you stated) a year for 5 years or a gun player at pick 2? I want pick 2 every day of the week.
