It's not the equivalent of a vaccine shot because they have had the virus and more than likely passed it throughout the community causing other infections, allowing the virus to survive. Not herd immunity I'm afraid.

Herd immunity is the disastrous ideal chased by the Swedish and the UK Governments (at least at first), with the concept that once a certain number of people catch COVID they will have an immunity to it and so eventually it won’t be able to spread anymore. It was madness to pursue this in a virus little was known about (including the possibility for reinfection, as well as what effects the virus would have on those who survive it). It’s not worked and both are well under the 70% of population to catch it that is estimated would be required for herd immunity to be met, with already terrible death tolls.

But that is what herd immunity would be without a vaccine.
