6 years is a very large sweetener, especially because by the end of the contract he and Clark will both be 31, Cloke definetely but Clark off the top of my head! I still think he would be a good get, along with Boak who we now look to be in the box seat for. Its a funny move but I really hope it pays off to win his sig!

IIRC Clark is two years younger.

I see no point in paying (at a guess) $300k more per year for a forward of equal calibre and two years older.

We'd be dishing out over 20% of our salary cap for two forwards when really, we've still got Cook, Martin, Fitzpatrick etc. who could all yet prove to be handy second tall forwards. Especially Martin.

I would seriously rather that money went to tempting Boak and/or Beams. Chase something we actually need - gun midfielders. O course, not a million a year, but...

I understand the concept of paying overs to get a key player to walk to another club so the cash doesn't bother me but the 5 yrs part is a massive risk.

If that bit about being prepared to offer up to 6 years is true then they've lost the plot I'm affraid. That's nearly enough time for Labor to be voted out, lose the following election and then be voted back in again FFS.

Right now IMO Cloke can't improve that much more as a footballer, there is only one way to go wrt his career and that is down. The reason he is the best contested mark is because there simply is nobody better than him right now. That doesn't mean that better options won't emerge in the next couple of years as he tapers off.

We have a coach in Neeld who has worked very closely with Cloke and also a footy department with a lot of knowledge (i.e. Craig). If they want Cloke this bad you have to believe there's a good reason why. In saying this I really hope they spend some time on improving/developing the midfield.

I hope we get CLoke, I dont give a shit how much we pay him or for how long

This team has been pathetic for 50 years, havent come close to a flag since 1964. Haven't played finals since 2006 for christs sake

Everyone who is saying ' develop our own kids', well please wake up and sell the coffee.

The MFC have been trying to 'develop our own' for the last 5 decades and we have gotten nowhere.

Get Clark and Boak. I trust in Neeld, Craig and the rest of the new regime. They are bold and brave, unlike those who went before them.

Boak and Clark?

I'm aware that we're (supposedly) paying 92.5% of the cap currently which mean we can afford these blokes now, but what about when our young blokes start to improve? Trengove will start to command $400k at a minimum (although not until 2015), Howe will want a big pay rise, Frawley would want more, plus there's so many more younger guys on our list that logically it's essentially a guarantee that some of them will improve to the point where they'll command much more money.

If we've got Clark, Boak and Cloke (hypothetically) taking up a huge chunk of the cap because we've had to pay overs to drag them to the club, then it prevents our ability to lock away our younger better players who will want more as they improve and could leave us in a Collingwood-type situation where there's Beams/Wellingham/Reid/O'Brien/Goldsack unsigned as well as Cloke and you'd think if Cloke signs with the Pies then one or two of them are goneski.

Also given that we already have a genuine power forward in Clark, I can't justify the real worth in paying even more for a somewhat out-of-form second power forward.

I just like the fact we are now big players in the race to sign these stars out of contract.

The club has been stock piling cap space for years waiting for the advent of free agency and opportunities like this. I'm confident that we will have run the contract scenarios and weighed up all the possibilities when we make these decisions. We have to trust that like Geelong, success or the likelyhood of impending success would keep the group together.

Personally I really dislike all things Cloke, so cringe at the prospect of him playing for the club, but Eddie is a flog and for no other reason than that I hope we massively over inflate his contract at Collingwood and in the process derail there entire list.

wait for them to improve for what? I have been waiting for them to improve since 1964. unfortunately money and contracts like this is what footy has come to

I'm yet to see any credible source for this report. How do these things become known, yet nobody knows when or where they happened? It could all be hot air from David Cloke.

Another aggressive trade offer is this really the MFC?

And can you imagine the look on eddies face if he leaves the pies for the dees

It's interesting to see the MFC are only paying Clark 1.5M over 3 years according to this article.

I am not interested in Cloke who is just not that good in my opinion and not interested in a war with Eddie who has been a big supporter of the MFC regardless of whether or not he is a shit bloke...

Really? Do you think if we offer the same as the Blues he would prefer to come to the Dee's

Seriously if we want him we need to above the odds. I think if we offer $1.2 M per year for 5 years it will make a statement to him.

C&C in the forward line would be the best in comp. We can then find players that can actually get the ball to them.

I feel on form we are paying the majority of our team too much .. might as well target some good players as developing our own isnt working well.

He has done nothing this year to warrant the salary he is asking for. Cloke is obviously not interested in anything else but money. We have enough of those players on our list at the moment.

This is where Green, Davey and Moloney take pay-cuts.

I'd be really interested to see what Jamar re-signed for, he'd seem the type of Bloke to take a cut for the team.

Green will likely be gone at the end of the year, the game just looks past him unfortunately.

Moloney, I have NFI what he's doing... and Davey's been getting 600k for so long that surely he can afford to drop a couple of 100k in the interests of team success.

I'm sure there would be a performance based element to such a long contract.

And we are getting at least 2 top Mids this year - if not 4 - to go with Trengove, Gysberts, Jones, Sylvia, Blease and Grimes. Our midfield isn't looking too bad in 2-3 years time.

"That's the way you do it - you drive up the price at the M.F.C.
Let me tell 'ya, them guys ain't dumb.

We got to contact these elite midfielders - expensive contracts need to be delivered. We got sign these Travis Boaks. We got to sign these Dayne Beamsssss!"

I'm conflicted, because despite the fact I consider Cloke as overrated as ****, I can't help but wonder how awesome a forward combo of him and Clark could be. But the gap between Cloke and Clark - talent wise - isn't much. Certainly not at that price. The money would be better off elsewhere.
Signing Cloke would almost be like money for nothing.
