No question that he looks a cut above our other picks. Genuinely looks like he has something special. Not to bitch or anything but in contrast I still shake my head about taking McGrath with a number one pick. Not to say there’s ever any guarantees, but you want to see those signs in top picks. Think we got lucky here.
There's a lot of pressure with pick 1, clubs don't want to miss because of the optics and will often take the player with the high floor rather than the high ceiling. I think McGrath fits the bill there.

With a slightly later pick you can take a punt on a guy like Robey who is less of a guarantee to make it but has a ridiculous ceiling.

Of course they have to look for solid attributes to go along with the high ceiling but to ignore high ceiling is almost as bad as ignoring solid attributes and I think they know that. I think the club fooled themselves regarding his speed and the weapon that would be in the midfield. Understandable I guess but like you say it was optics fear that drove them, not correct analysis I think.

We were also neck deep in saga and that 2016-2020 era was characterised by over-valuing loyal, solid citizens

What’s even crazier about this is people forget that Robey injured his shoulder during his first final game so through the rest of the finals series he played with a crack in his shoulder and still managed to kick 4 in the granny. That’s also another reason why he played predominately forward after his 40 and 3 game against the jets.

And cracked in bloody hard too. I’m really excited to see what he can do.

What his pace like? Tested ok at combine?
Slow as **** according to all the crying Richmond supporters. In fact, the profile I get from reading a sample of their posters here would read;

‘Is a slow, lumbering midfielder, who tested poorly for speed at the combine. He comes across as arrogant and not the type of character you would want at your club. He is an obvious flash-in-the-pan with no solid foundations to his junior career to suggest he will have the consistency to succeed at the highest level. In fact, most of his notable performances were against children while his top draft level peers were destroying men at higher levels. Definitely a spud, flop, and a massive reach by a desperate and poorly run organisation at Tullamarine.’

Unless you go to pre-draft posts where he is Dangerfield, Bontempelli and Dusty all rolled into one stud.

You've worked yourself into a shoot there, brother!

What a draft for the Dons!!
Better to celebrate in few years if the players become regulars and help lift the club out of mediocrity. People were singing the club’s praises after the 2006 and 2020 drafts and both failed to be the boost the club was after. In saying that, can’t wait to see what Robey can do and hopefully he features in the senior team from the start.

Looks skilled. Looks a bit slow off when he starts running but can get to high speed.
20 meter time at the combine was 3.1 so only average in that area but the scope is more power than speed.
