Will Hayward
Spritely Sydney Swans forward Will Hayward enjoyed a rocketing start to his career as he became the 11th-youngest player in the AFL era to reach 50 career goals in 2018. The 2016 draftee’s nippy pace and cunning goal awareness have made him a dangerous option in coach John Longmire’s forward line. A broken jaw and a persistent hip injury limited Hayward to just 12 goals in 13 senior games in 2019, but the South Australian is attacking the 2020 campaign on the back of his first full pre-season. Don’t be surprised if the exciting Swan finds himself on a wing this year.

Will Hayward
DOB: 26 October 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #21, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Walkerville (SA)/North Adelaide (SANFL)

I think if Will goes back to SA most will understand. It’s different to the Dawson situation.

If he goes to somewhere like Carlton, I think things will be different.

And personally I don’t refer to any players (or clubs) like you suggest some might. It’s just a game.

Why is it different to Dawson, who gets called Judas by a number of posters?

Dawson’s partner was keen post Covid, to go to Adelaide.

Maybe Hayward’s intellectual partner can get a gig lecturing at AU

The Waywardians here are frothing because he kicked 4 goals in successive games.

The bloke tends to disappear when the going is hot. He rarely takes contested marks and is more likely to spoil attempts by our talls. He is not the smartest fwd going around and as reliable kick as Casboult.

Is borderline worth what the Club apparently* offered.

Interesting. Various former Swans have received all manner of derogatory comments when they left for other mobs.
  • Selfish
  • Greedy
  • Over rated own ability
  • Liar
  • Not a team player
  • Rat or scum.

I wonder about the reaction if Hayward goes or stays but forces the trade of another player like Melican, Roberts or Sheldrick because we could not pay them.

Only three times this century did I feel relief (Grohan, Jones and Hall). Usually I am saddened but always wish the best.

Still enjoy watching Dawson, Mitchell and Nank
Most of those who have left us have gone for opportunities. Can't hold that against them. Careers are short.
I was a fan of some, not of others, but wish none of them ill. I was disappointed with Dawson because I had the feeling (not knowledge) that he had given his word and reneged. Guys like Aliir were on the up and up from the word go. Hayward so far fits that category. No promises, no ill will (pun intended).

I don’t like the Judas stuff, maybe I’ve used that word to describe him but I don’t remember and if I did I hope it was only as a joke.

I think that seemed to stem from Dawson saying late in that season that Sydney fans had nothing to worry about which I recall listening to (I think it was an interview with David King) and not having the same level of confidence that others had. It sounded more like leading questions than a commitment to the club.

My issue with the Dawson trade was always the gaslighting from the Crows and the media over his value.

It was over 2 months before the end of our season that Dawson made the "nothing to worry about" comment. It wasn't late in the season.

People have made, imo unfair, assumptions that he knew he was leaving at the time, and that players (along with their partners) are completely unreasonable to change their minds over a period of at least 2 (Covid impacted) months. They've used those assumptions to be a bit ridiculous about a former player imo.

If Hayward went back to SA, I'd have nothing personal against him for going home. Same as I don't towards Dawson, because I have zero evidence he was trying to deceive.

AA was regarded as a lazy @@@@ and we could adapt

All of this is a distraction , if he loves the club and his mates that's great love him to stay , otherwise piss off
No one in their right mind going to turn down $200/3300k extra. I sure as hell wouldn't. He's playing great football for us, he can continue to play good football for us right up to the end of the season however far that goes. After that I wish him the best.

It's downright silly to call someone out for moving to a new job because they get offered more money in this day and age.

Playing great with 4 goals back to back , but same possies and he even said he was lucky thanks to his mates

Ticky you would leave us! :(

I had a good think about your replles & agree I am off the mark.
Hence why we should match any offer of 6 years at $800,000-850,000 to keep him for that running ability alone.
That emotional side of me has got the better of me & I want to keep him no matter what.

I don’t think the club should match the Carlton or Crows bids.
But I’m not going to pretend he’s a bad player.
We’re a good side, and the salary cap means we’ll lose good players.

Need to get you into an HR role

Yes I agree with this.
Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t mean to portray he isn’t a valuable player but he & most of our team are just not worth having a ridiculous auction over. I always look at how they play in the big games with everything on the line.
He is not consistently in our top half best of the team. Last 4 weeks in a contract year, going well. But I’ve seen this before. Will is a loved player but we have put the time into him so $650K is fair. If it’s because he or his partner need to get ‘home’, we’ll let him go.
It just stinks when it’s to a team not in his home state.

I heard from players association ceo, Paul Marsh, that the average wage for an AFL listed player is now around 500k once the new agreement kicks in. He thinks it won't be long before we have a player raking in 2mil a year. I know some of the figures for Wilbur floating around are mind blowing to us average plebs but when viewed in this context, I think something around an average 750-800k a year is probably the going rate to get him out of the Swans. I think if we can get in around the 700k / year over 2-3 years, he'd have to be a good chance to stay given he'd want to win flags with his mates. I think most footy players who are happy at their club would be willing to sacrifice 100k or so for this chance.

Matching doesn't necessarily mean keeping though, it just means forcing a trade.

I'd be very disappointed if the club jus let him walk to the crows. We should be making it as difficult as possible for them after the Dawson thing.

can we get dawson back as part of any deal?

You don’t rate Hayward and that’s fair enough. If nothing you are like a curmudgeon dribbling and have been consistent.

But then you go on some weird sexist rant about Haywards partner lecturing at University. That was odd.

It’s been difficult to bag him as Hayward plays his role and after nearly 8 years and a 150 games seems to have a spot in the best 22. Oddly there a numerous clubs who think he’s AFL standard. Maybe he has a career after all.

No doubt you will pump the tyres of an average reserves player who has been robbed of a spot because Hayward holds down his place.

Meh… modelling is an appalling and exploitative industry that provides negligible value. Many would be, current and ex models have eating disorders directly related to the industry. I know two psychs who are eating disorder specialists Amd say their patient and wait list contain numbers of models.
