How would we go appointing Sheedy to a position of Football and media operations manager with some sort of role with player welfare.? The idea stems from another rumour that suggested that Sheedy was going to be appointed to a simliar postion at Richmond.
I know the first problem people will see is that it could be a Sheedy lead side by stealth and any new coach would be a puppet. Another problem would be finding a coach not intimidated by having the former coach around in that role.
The above factors aside i think it is a role worth looking at if Sheeds himself wanted to stay on (and i repeat looking at , im not saying just jump in and hire him now). Obviously you have to remove him from match selection and any match day involvement so he had zero power in that area. You would also not have him involved with the new recruiting set up.
It would leave Sheedy free to play a continual role in promoting the club in the media , on radio and interstate. His skill in player welfare would be a plus and it would take pressure of a new coach if he had to deal with only the football issues and only had to do the media work that was involved with the football side of things.I fell his skillset would be ideal to work in such a role.
I dont know if it is something that Sheedy would even look at given he still firmly belives in his ability to coach and it may not work if he cant get past those issues.

Can't see it happening. It would be good if he could step back a bit like Parkin did at the blues and let a new coach take over the match day stuff like Brittain did. I just think the new coach would be too intimidated and Sheedy would find it too difficult to step back for it to work well.

If he's not coaching he probably needs to go completely.

Sheedy has spent many, many hours doing this role as part of his coaching. Another coach would benefit greatly if he could focus on just football. I've always hoped that when he retires he would take on a role promoting the game.

I said something similar on a separate thread. If he would stay on after being sacked then of course he would be more than handy. It would seem unlikely that he would agree to something like that.

It certainly has some merit ant.

The thing is Sheeds in a spin doctor and i can't see him changing his ways.
If he was the main face of the club in the media i feel he would continue to play his BS games and talk in riddles, deflecting issues etc.

IF Sheeds goes, which i don't think he will, I would like to see a whole new approach in many areas.

One of those would be for us to be more upfront and honest.

It does have merit but dont think sheeds could do that. He has been fantastic for our club and would love him to stay in some capacity if wasn't still coach like marketing but cant see it.

Think the AFL will grab him if we dont re-sign him.

If he goes does that mean the end of the "windy hill flu", "martians" and "seagulls" - it wouldnt be the same would it ?

Are we any less upfront and honest than any other club ?

Yes i think we are.

Especially when it comes to injuries.

Also Sheeds with his continual line "We will bring in 3-4 players this week" only to make 1 change.

West Coast where completly up front over Judd.
Malthouse always give you details of there injuries.
Sydney have been forthcoming over Halls injury.
Carlton spilled the beans over Whitnells knee.
The list goes on . Mate we are no different to other clubs. Hell we dont even have the record for most late changes this year.
As for Sheedy giving the media continual lines he is no different to other coachs , do you or the media really expect him to tell the opposition how many changes will be made. I dont know why people get so wound up about it. Would you prefer that he make no comments at all. Anyway i dont ever recall him saying we will definately bring in "x" amount of players. It is always we "may bring in " or "could possibly have " however many changes.
Maybe we should ban the coachs from having media conferances so they cant annoy anyone with their spin.

I still don't know what all the fuss is about.

If Sheedy:

A.) Is coaching well this season (which he seems to be)

B.) Is getting results (which he has been this year, especially after a 3 win season the year before

C.) Still has the passion and desire to coach (which he does)

D.) Still has the ability to adapt to the new and changing AFL environment (well he's being doing that well for 27 years, why would he not being able to adapt now?)

...Then he should be reappointed. The crux of the issue seems to be his age, but as long as your mind is right (and his mind is right) age is irrelevant. I think it's actually an advantage, because of his experience.

Ronald Reagan became President of the United States in his 70's! And when criticsed by the Democratic candidate regarding his age, he remarked, "If you don't talk about my age, I won't talk about your inexperience."

The only negative about Sheeds, is that he votes for the Labor party. Apart for that, I see no real reason why he shouldn't be reappointed. I agree it's the "easy", decision to reappoint him, it's a harder decision to sack him, but the harder decision isn't always correct.

I think in this case, the easy decision is also the correct one. What's the other option? Get a young coach and "hope" the punt pays off?

Yeah i spose those examples are right but there have been others that worked to the contrary, like Lyon and Kozi, but that's all i can remember tbh.

As for the changes, hes says it regularly and i'ts almost like a threat to the players, that he doesn't go through with.

I couldn't give a rats about the other clubs or the media but i get annoyed at Sheedy's continual threats, that he doesn't follow through with.

He makes them quite regularly.
Of course they usually follow a loss.

Doubt that he would go for it Ant.....assuming we miss the finals, it will be 3 in a row and I would expect the board would/should make the change.

1. Kev outsmarts himself sometimes with too many moves
2. He is about developing the game/spectacle not winning at all costs
3. His recruiting has been quite poor since 2000 (And HE DOES have the last say on mids v's KPP's)
4. He is too positive (I know this sounds ridiculous, but he always looks forward and I wonder whether the team lulls into a false sense of security and gets ahead of their ability)
5. He has his "pets" which he harbours for far too long
6. I dont think he has the skills to deal with/relate to generation y
7. the middle group are just not coming on - maybe they need new vision, direction and guidance

Bring on Guy Mc Kenna...

Dont know about McKenna , i have heard the same whisper that Longy has and that is he isnt a really good comunicator. The must be some sort of reason why he didnt make it to the pointy end last year when a coaching job came up and a reason why Malthouse refuses to pump up his tyres.

There are a lot of rumours that go around in football circles, that are not true.

Having said that i have no idea if they are true or not.

You must not have heard Malthouse the other day as he game McKenna a massive wrap

I probably can't see that happening. It would be like Vince Lombardi when he took a year off coaching to be the GM at the Green Bay Packers. It was too hard for him not to stick his bib in everywhere. Sheeds would probably be the same.

He's a coach, and he's gunna coach.

funnily enough, have thought this and spoken about this with my old man a lot over the years. In some respects - ala 97 he took his promtion a bit too far and forgot about his coaching - which has been my main gripe with him - it is also why he would be great for the club.

But the trick is distancing himself from the football department. Very difficult.
