Lost in the euphoria of the season may be the little stat that Geelong has now for the first time in their history, won 19 games in a home and away season, ahead of last year's effort. Since 1970, when 22 game H & A seasons began (Bar 1993...Grrrr) Geelong has won 17 games once (1980) and 16 games four times (1981, 1989, 1991, 1995).

Let's hope they step into territory that has only been charted twice, as only the Blues in 1995 (20 wins) and the Bombers in 2000 (21 wins) have reached the level of 20 wins or more in a H & A season. And in a good portent for success, they each won the flag that year.

Yep, hope the boys don't let up and ease off the pedal. I want that percentage record as well as equaling the bummers win/loss record of 2000. I'm enjoying this season much much more than last season which had a sense of relief more than anything else. :thumbsu:

So do I, which is why I was really annoyed/frustrated when we allowed Sydney to kick 6.5 in the last quarter when we put the cue in the rank.

Despite winning by 39 points, we dropped 4% and are now back down to 159.1%. If it's close this weekend we'll lose more %-age, which means we'll need a massive win against WCE to bump it up.

I want a %-age of 160+ at the end of the season just so we can hold another record as well.

Don't let up boys!!

Isn't that a given considering last time at Subiaco? What will Geelong go into that game at? $1.01 to win?

We won 16 in 1992 didnt we?

lol lots of confident cats in here, good to see.
But for me, i just want a GF thats pretty much over in the second quarter like last year.

I remember when I was a kid and you'd see the great Hawthorn side of the late '80s winning 19 games and think how amazing it was...

In a way it's hard to believe now. Still, the most important time is yet to come.

I agree, I used to think winning 16 was awesome.

its a terrific effort and one i am sure the team will reflect upon fondly in the years to come (esp. if the take out the flag).
It would also have to be the only time a team has won 38 out of 40 games as well.

Oops....i stupidly omitted one of the years Geelong finished minor premiers! Make that five times 16 wins since 22 round seasons began.

Interesting thing is, that Geelong usually when making the finals tend to be right up there in the firing line. Here is a list from 1970 of where Geelong finished the H & A season.

1976:- 4th

1978:- 5th

1980:- 1st

1981:- 3rd

1989:- 3rd

1991:- 3rd

1992:- 1st

1994:- 4th

1995:- 2nd

1996:- 7th

1997:- 2nd

2000:- 5th

2004:- 3rd

2005:- 6th

2007:- 1st

2008:- 1st

So in those 17 times we've made the finals, we have given ourselves a double chance, or top 4 chance on 10 occasions (Excluding 1976 and 1994), when those positions were elimination chances. Unlike other sides who squeak into the finals, Geelong gives things a faily good shake when in there. The Dogs by contrast have NEVER finished minor premiers, now i've seen the Cats do this 4 times in my life. Once every 10 years, if they won a flag at that rate i'd be happy!

a few records wouldnt be so bad for sure

but ill rest a happy man if we can simply pinch a second consecutive flag.

and maybe while were at it a second consecutive brownlow eh? :D

How many losing games has Joel Selwood played in? Harry Taylor? Selwood would have to hold a record for the most successful debut/second season, surely.

I know Linga took the all-time record for most consecutive wins earlier this year (27 before Collingwood tore us a new one, wasn't it?)

I think Selwood's only played in 3 losses in his 40 game career thus far, which were the Bulldogs and Kangaroos games, and the Collingwood game this year.

I think Chappy would be getting close to Ling's record, since he didn't play against Collingwood IIRC. Don't know how many of our 19 wins he's missed though, but I don't think he has played in a losing game this year.

Max Rooke last tasted defeat wearing a senior Geelong guernsey in Rd 22 2006!!

Brad Ottens hasn't played in a losing game since Rd 21 and has played in 15 consecutive victories.

Chappy has played in 19 consecutive wins since the Port game last year. There would be a host of players to have participated in just two defeats in the last 40 games, only Max Rooke of the regular senior players missed both the Port and Pies loss. Someone wrote that Rooke is needed, ie when he's out of the side, Geelong are for the poorer. I'll drink to that, he surely must now be thinking that de-feat are at the end of de-legs!!:D

There we have it...Rookie is the key. Must stay in the side based on that fact alone (and for the fact he is one of a rare breed of player that can be outnumbered 3 to 1 and still win the contest)...to the MAX!

Good stuff. If we can win the next two and equal Essendon's mark, that would be awesome and a testament to this mob's will to win.

If not for bloody Collingwood...!

That's an interesting thought though - if we were undefeated till now, would it weigh heavily on the club? I know us fans would love it but would the players feel pressure from the expectation of going through a whole season undefeated?

I assume your talking pre finals? Coz we finished 4th in 2004 - behind Port, Brissy and the all conquering saints (after 'the streak').

Here's some GFC-related records being broken - by Benny Graham!

http://www.gfc.com.au/tabid/3933/Default.aspx?newsid=56099

And Ben’s all round abilities have seen him create sporting history. In 2006, he joined the New York Jets leadership group, becoming the first Australian to captain an American pro-sports team. Ben is also the only player to have captained a team in two professional sports leagues, having previously skippered Geelong. “I was shocked and humbled (to be made co-Captain),” Graham said.

Onya Benny! We'll field a team and win the FIFA World Cup yet!

Now, it's the first time Geelong has won 20 games in a H & A season, and a win over the Eagles will match the Bomber's 21-1 season in 2000.

It's nice to see these little milestones coming along, i would be a lucky fan to ever think i'd see these exceeded in the future.

Its only the second time in history a side has won 21 games in a season.

It will not happen again i wouldnt think.
