Normally I wouldn't post this on the AFL board but I'm interested to see what you people think.

There is plenty of debate amongst Hawthorn supporters about whether Aaron Lord should be delisted now that he wasn't traded. The majority seem to be saying yes but a few are arguing against it.

Here are his stats:
Age: 26
Height: 186cm
Weight: 84kg
Games: 125
Career Goals: 155

Year Team Games Kicks Marks H'bls Goals B'low Vs
1998 Hawthorn 22 269 78 141 31 4
1999 Hawthorn 21 141 51 74 42 2
2000 Hawthorn 7 42 9 17 6 0
2001 Hawthorn 21 144 65 89 35 3

I'm actually leaning towards keeping him in 2002. With 35 goals he was our 2nd highest goal kicker for the year, and with Croad already gone we would have to find 60 goals from somewhere in 2002. He has the ability to win a game off his own boot (see Melbourne and Bulldogs this year) and is very strong. He is also an incredibly accurate snap shot, so much so he oftens snaps when he doesn't have to.

IMHO Lord can also play in the midfield, well at least short bursts of 5-10 minutes as part of the rotation. Schwab was doing it in the Ansett Cup and he was getting plenty of the footy, yet he wasn't tried once during the season there. Sure, he would be no good at looking after his opponent, but the 1994 Semi Final and the Ansett Cup this year proved he could be worth throwing on the ball for a little while to pick up some touches.

The negatives are he is very selfish, often taking on 3 players and attempting an impossible snap shot when he has teammates open. He also is not a very good set shot for a forward, and when he is down on confidence or unhappy he tends to lose interest. The main reason Hawthorn supporters want him gone is his inconsistency - there can be games at a time where he is unsighted, and 4 quarter performances during his career could be counted on one hand. However, this may be more to do with his role as a crumbing forward.

I say we should keep him, simply because we have no players ready to step up to take his role in 2002 (Hazell, Nicholls, Bateman and Claeke are likely candidates) and I think he is too good a player just to throw away.

My question is, would you keep him if you were Hawthorn, and secondly, would you want your club to pick him up in the pre-season draft??

Aaron Lord

Personally, I think he is probably in the top 5 or so small forwards in the league.

(along with Lappin, Farmer, Burns, etc)

If Farmer's worth $100K's, then Lordy must be worth something.

I'd certainly hang on to him, and perhaps look to trade him next season for a 1st round pick, or something.

(Considering Farmer was considered worth two 1st round picks, does anybody disagree when I say that Aaron Lord is at LEAST half the player Farmer is?)

I wouldn't want him at the Eagles because we already have enough of that sort of player.

It (to me) depends on two factors: team balance and assessment of Lord's character. If he was as troublesome as some people suggest, I wouldn't want him anyway - because football is a game played above the shoulders.

I don't know what he's really like, so if I was Hawthorn I might keep him - they've had him for a while and must know him well. The stats certainly didn't look bad for a goalsneak/occasional midfielder.

i dunno about that chris. with wanganeen aging, and cockatoo collins aging, maybe lord would be the perfect replacement for a year or two!

I really respect Aaron Lord as a player and as a person, he is a really nice guy..... I think he still has good football left in him, he needs to be played in the midfield though, this is where his strength and speed will really come into play.

I hope he stays at the Hawthorn F.C in 2002!

Yeah, I dunno Macca....we don't need ********s. If we want goalsneaks, thats what the Murray boys & Peter Burgoyne are for. Heck, even Kane Cornes.

Besides, the problem with Wanganeen & Che isn't aging....its potential for injuries...

He looked like he was set to become a star on-baller of the future after the 1994 Second Semi. Somehow turned himself into your stereotypical all duck, no dinner; running hot and cold type goalsneak. Still plenty to offer when at his best, but how often is that form likely to be struck?

I'd give him another season.

He also played on ball in the Ansett Cup Series this year and got at least 25 possesions a game, so why does Hawthorn insist on playing him in the forward pocket?

Hey, he's a better player than Tim Hargreaves ever was!!! :)

Tim wasn't a great footballer but he wasn't an arrogant arseh*le either (just a lazy bugger) , Aaron did too much harm in Geelong, were happy with what we got.

Lord wasn't an arrogant arseh*le and still isn't...... how could you be happy with recieveing Hargreaves? Lord has kicked about 120 goals since he has been at Hawthorn, how many did Hargreaves kick for Geelong? And they have played the same type of roles.... so what does that say about the trade?

I shall repeat, Aarod Lord was an arrogant arseh*le at Geelong, he only had one friend (Cain Liddle), his selfishness led to resentment amongst teamates, he caused so much trouble down there.

Yes we are happy, Aaron did more harm than good for our club, he's performed well at Hawthorn and has obviously improved his attitude to the game and to his teamates, good luck to him but the Aaron Lord that was at Geelong was not the quality of person that we wanted or needed.

Cheers

Aaron is an arseh*le. He refused to play for Box Hill in the Preliminary Final. I'm sure the players were as insulted as we were. Go to hell you soft turd.

Who's the soft turd?

I am worried you were reffering to me?

Nah...you don't wanna end up like me! :D

The Hitman

Lord is a Hungry Individual "wannabe" goalsneek who can't kick goals from set shots....and who refuses to share the ball with a teammate in a better goal scoring position on NUMEROUS occasions.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks......he won't change.

If we were dumb enough to let Croady go......then there's no question about Lord.......send him to Footscray....they need another "Girl"
