Expect the "Anti Northern Academies Vitriol" to ramp up next week - Vic Metro just flogged by SA by 10 goals+.

VAFL clubs will be on the warpath.
Yeah, that'll happen when their defence is garbage and they have no midfielder that can match it with Sharp. SA are winning these championships.

Not sure of the cognitive connection between the problem of South Australia is too good for Vic Metro and the solution of let's beat up on NSW and Qld....

Punch down. It's the Australian way. :p

It's not how good SA was .... it's how poor their local kids were.
They will want access to the Academy kids.
At best, you can now expect earlier bids than has been the norm.

There has always been talk that this year’s draft is weaker than recent drafts. Both in terms of top end talent and potential depth.

A lot of this is based on the weaker Victorian cohort this year.

So the Allies did pretty well to only go down to SA narrowly last week.

Allies probably the best side, unlucky to play the other contender first week as the Allies typically take a while to get going as they can't train together etc. Their first up game is often their worst

Also missing 3 of their best players, including arguably their best in Uwland.

Academy picks inflation incoming.

Scouts believe this year’s AFL draft crop is the thinnest in a while, so what could it mean for clubs with early picks?
I had a look at possible buyers for picks last week. And currently before the trade period and picks have traded hands, there really aren't many clubs currently, with the later picks, to be buyers of picks being put up for trade, particularly if it's for a team looking for a points upgrade.

West Coast could trade up for Gold Coast's first pick, tied to Port, but it takes their picks 13, 19 and 31, for currently pick 4.

Essendon might be buyers for our first round pick, for picks 25 & 27. But we're likely sending a late pick back, such as pick 50, that reduces our points upgrade a little.

There just aren't many clubs with the picks to move up at this stage, and the clubs that do, project to have later nga kids they'll need points for as well.

Can the AFL fix its broken draft system as St Kilda academy prospect who got away highlights NGA program failings
The review headed by AFL executive Rob Auld and conducted with help from AFL officials Ned Guy and Geoff Walsh could make its findings in time for an August commission meeting.
Auld has made clear to interested observers that he isn’t ruling out anything just yet.
Northern academies are not seen to be at risk but the bidding system under which the Suns and Lions will secure top-five talents this year could be tightened again for November’s draft.

I wonder if after this sustained period of success the club can influence kids to play footy enough without the need to have an academy to get more Queensland's drafted

Not sure there's a lot of point if that's the case if it only allows us to draft outside the top 30 picks

Lions will only need to match for Annable. He will get a single figure bid, but even if the Lions want any of their other academy kids like Geesu, Waller, Lillico etc I doubt they would be needing to match a bid and could just take them as Cat B rookie like Brain, Reville etc.

The suns on the other hand, they will have bids to match all over the shop. I predict they will match on Uwland and watch Patterson and Addinsall go elsewhere, then match on Coulson and maybe even take Collins as a Cat B Rookie. Murray being injured is the one that they may get lucky and not have to match a bid, and if so - would def take him at a Cat B I reckon - hes a gun and has a good younger brother too

I thought Dylan Patterson would be a no brainer for the Suns to match, isn't he pretty highly rated by a few draft pundits?

Have the Suns recent academy picks been a bit underwhelming or will they be a slow burn?

Seems like with a lot of our highly rated academy picks they've slid come the draft and that's been justified but maybe that hasn't happened with the Suns yet

Might be a case of not having enough draft capital to match 2 high picks.

A few of their selections have been in positions where draftees usually take a bit of time to find their feet and develop at AFL level, like Jed Walters. I think the draft in general is overrated and is much more hit and miss than people like to admit.

It's been an issue for 5+ years from what I gather.

Uber talented, just a bit loose.

Character probably an unfair term to use, he may well be a ripping character. More to do with behaviour based stuff, which I have heard pretty directly.

He's getting drafted, and the AFL environment should be good for him. GC may just be hesitant to spend big capital on him when they have Uwland, Coulson, Murray, Addinsall, Collins as well - who are A grade citizens.

Personally, on talent alone - I rate him ahead of both Uwland and Annable - so talent not the issue!
