Tickner is an interesting case, I was assured 2years ago when he was 16 by someone in the know that he was going to be the 1st academy kid signed on the list. He then has had 2 years of academy development and has probably gone backwards! The academy is a massive Furphy!!! This model is a waste of money and time!

In Kerr's interview he speaks nominating multiple players as an issue when it comes to trading picks. For eg. they nominate Freeman and another club bid their 3rd pick, they nominate Conway and a club bids 4 rd pick, Tickner nominates and a club bids 5th rd pick. That then ******s the Lions from eg. trading Docherty and our 4th rd pick to Carlton for their 2nd and 3rd picks.

Not necessarily.They possibly either know other clubs rate them above where we do and thus aren't going to bid on them, or they're just waiting to see where they go. There's also a decent chance that many of those guys will go through to the rookie draft and we'll take them there.

No idea but if we get just one champion out of it over the next few years it will have paid for itself in spades. Way too early to say whether the benefit will outweighs the cost.
 
It's BS. Must cost quite a bit of coin to run these academies and if we only nominate one bloke while the others are picked up elsewhere it's complete and utter BS. We put in time and money to develope these blokes just to see them potentially go to another club for nothing. I will be fuming if Conway and co. make it at another club like Beams and Thomas of recent.

Acuguy even outlined what was said in the Kerr interview as to why we didn't bid on them all. Have a listen to part 2, goes for 10 mins. You should try doing a little bit of research before forming an opinion that it's complete and utter bs.

Considering how our strategy has been to raise our average draft pick to the middle of the second round, and last year we didn't use any picks after 30, having the flexibly now to trade picks knowing that other clubs are unlikely to pick our academy kids up in the first or second round makes sense.

It looks like we are going to have an abundance of second round picks as live picks and will probably be gone from the draft by the third round. So if we want them we will take them. If other clubs want to back themselves in with a second round pick before ours then that is the way the cookie crumbles.

We will probably be over-paying to draft them anyway, why lose flexibly if we don't have to?
 
Im sure we will take a few to put on the rookie list, but agree, with how trade week looks like it is going to pan out, we really do need all our picks flexible. It might be a case of getting a couple of 2nd round picks, and them sending one of them with a player to achieve a higher pick back.

I think as usual, we will be happy to be done with the draft by the end of the 2nd round. That means probably 3 rookies, probably 1-2 upgrades from the rookie list and we already have McGuane via FA, that already has us covering our outgoing players. I can certainly see the sense in not taking more in the ND.
 
Was just thinking that trade negotiations would have already started so Kerr would have a very good idea how our picks might be used so you could hardly blame him for leaving them free so we can get the most we can from these trades and still be able to draft these guys if we wish.

Brisbane has taken Johnathan Freeman as an Academy pick with its rd4 pick (currently 59), after matching Adelaide's rd3 bid (currently 42).
 
I cannot believe the rubbish that i am reading from some of our supporters. You have to be realistic, not ever academy player is going to make it or be any good. We are lucky to get two players on our list in the past two years and most likely get another two via rookie draft or late picks.

In relation to cost, it is irrelavent, as the AFL funds all clubs and unlike the victoria teams we have an opportunity to development home-grown talent and get them for very little. even if someone nominates a 1st round pick, we still get them and thats the important thing.
 
We have probably got the one that we really wanted to sew up this year and it will be nice work if we can take one or two others in the National Draft.

Even without the Academy we have preferred others to Gilbert,Tippett and Beams (all in the Suns area now) in the last Decade so it comes down to the judgement of the recruiters whether we fans like it or not.

We drafted 3 of the 25 locals that have been taken in the ND since 2004...Mills,Hooper and Proud...not one success there and it will improve on that with the Academy system in place no matter who we miss .
 
A 16 year old to watch out for is Ben Keays. I think someone mentioned he won the best player for QLD 16s this year. A talented, left-footed midfielder also from Morningside should get the gig in the 18s team next year.[/quote]


Know personally this kid and do not rate him, general consensus of most who play with him. Hes got talent yes but also would rather play for himself rather than the team, cannot find his own ball do not rate him one bit.

Id be happy with Crouch over Conway, just on potential.

its called maturity! Kids develop these skills, especially kids who are 16. Do you think Brad Johnson was a team player at 16? Gary Ablett at 16? No they did what they knew best...... get the pill and kick the goal to win the game as 90% of 16 year olds do. This makes them stand out, then they learn. Gee there are current AFL players like that now e.g. Yarran

Still do not believe he has what it takes to make it. Know a lot of the academy kids and know a lot about their personal lives e.g. which ones pulled their heads in for the opportunity to make it, and those who have not.
 
Well hopefully Ben Keays is reading this and will pull his head in. Nothing worst than seeing kids not fulfill their potential
