If I had to build a team from scratch; Goodes. The most versatile player I've ever seen.

If I had an established team with good rucks and KPs, then Johnson. Has more "elite" about him than Goodes, but is less versatile.

It wouldnt matter who you took if you had a good midfield and KPs. Goodes is a great player and you can build a team around him. Johnson is like a good batsman at no. 6, great to have but is more of an added bonus than anything whereas Goodes is Brain Lara, team builds around him

That's bull********.

Johnson averaged 22 touches this year and was second in the Coleman, he's not just an added bonus.

What I mean is that he does not display much guidance to the younger players in the squad. This is something that i think Hall, Bolton and Barry do really well. He is not a bad leader, and I understand that he does a lot of Charity work, but for the skills he displays, aka the knee injury, he does not do as much as one would expect to help lift the club when in dire sitations. .

I am curious how you know what Goodes contributes off the field. Unless you're an insider within the club, it's a bit dangerous to be making judgements in that regard. What we do know is that he has been chosen as part of the leadership group by his peers and he is deemed to be enough of a leader within his community to be invited to sit on the current indigenous advisory committee.

To be invited to sit ont he current indigenous advisory commitee shows that he is great working with young kids. He is a role model.

Goodes, as exceptional as he is, still hasn't totally sold himself to me. I can rate Johnson as one of the few elite in the league, like Judd, Kerr, Cox, Riewoldt, Buckley, West and Jonathan Brown. I am not saying I do not rate goods, he is a brilliant player, but, in total honesty, I rate Johnson higher. Goodes really needs to stand up and lead from the front like all of the others.

Has actually done nothing to be considered as good as the others mentioned

AA - hmmm, none
Coleman Medal - nope, he hasn't
Brownlow Medal - no
AFLPA MVP - Nope, hasn't been close
Rising Star - Again No
B/F - Hasn't even got one of these

Apart from a few dominant games against some of the worst teams in the competition [Hawthorn, Essedon, Port -this year- , against Fremantle when CC looked as if he was going to be be sacked] he shown nothing to be regarded as one of the games elite

Brown is a great player but he also was just lucky to be in a great side like Brisbane. It'll be interesting to see how he would go when the Lions are struggling will he get an All-Australian berth? Will he win a brownlow? Like you said he hasn't even won any best and fairest awards and normally they are considered high.

Maybe if he PLAYED a full year the stats might be different. 2002/2003 too many stars to beat for the B+F. It's a good competition for the BF when you have Power, Black, Voss, Akermanis, Lappin, Michael to compete with. This year will be different

I think thats something that we can excuse Johnno from not achieving ;)

To be honest off field Goodes seems almost beyond reproach. He is all class, as shown by his Brownlow speech last season, when he mentioned Scott West. I wanted to hate him cos he beat West but he made it hard

Im clearly very biased but I think Johnno has had a better career because he has been more consistent. Every season he's awesome, Goodes while always good is more up and down. However Goodes is a lot younger and could achieve anything before he retires. He could retire as an all time great, and he's possibly the best athlete I've seen play the game. You shouldn't be able to move like he does when your that size

Johnno's 06 IMO was every bit as Goodes even if he didn't win the Brownlow. His stats were just awesome, no-one has combined getting so much of the ball and so many goals for yonks. Johnno's never gonna win a Brownlow though cos for some reason the umpires don't seem to like him. Polled well in 06, but his second highest season tally is something ridiculous like 6
