How would you respond if an anglo player directed a white power salute and fired an imaginary rifle at an aboriginal section of the audience, then claimed afterwards it was because he was proud of his race and 'representing'?

Would that be 'worth all this blow up'?

You're equating Adam Goodes to a neo-Nazi?

I dont really get cut up by a bit of dancing by someone on the ground, there is no equivalent that would bother me personally to the point i would be offended, its just a dance

If they pulled an actual shot gun out, or went over and belted the crowd or something then thats an issue

I would prefer goodes to focus more on celebrating with his own fans or his team mates

But id also prefer the media to shut up and not bother asking him about it after the game then next day at a presser etc

The issue to me should be more about wether a player should carry on or go and thank his team mates and focus on the game. This whole are people racists, or is it too aggressive dance is just a media driven pc bust up

If you want to get all angry and offended by it then thats your right, but i just think there are way more important things to focus on

Lets not forget half the sides run out to songs that are war marches

Who gives a crap what the dance may of meant long ago really, it didnt actually start a war with anyone

So any gestures players make towards spectators are OK?

And yet is a kid in the crowd says something, they should be immediately condemned...

Most goal celebrations aren't a war cry aimed at and provoking opposition supporters.

Big difference.

Provoke the crowd lol with a dance

Why would he assume she was white? after all as you said he only instinctively turned and pointed to her.

Would you like to take a guess at the chances an indigenous Australian would be calling Goodes an ape at a footy game?

I've got a hunch he was on pretty safe ground if he assumed that the voice came from a non-indigenous member of the crowd.

Apparently Lumumba and Gartlett have both made their own war dances today. That should get the confused and worried bogans in more of a lather.

It's becoming clear you're either being deliberately obtuse, arguing in semantics or lacking in empathy. A black guy grows up being called "ape" and the like his entire life. You think when he hears it on the footy field he wouldn't reasonably assume it's someone racially vilifying him?

I've experienced racism myself so i have empathy for anyone who has experienced actual discrimination based on their race. Not for someone who got called names based on the way he looks (not race).

He didn't mime a throw. Also, you're the one attempting to draw the comparison, not me.

OK, he mimed a spear ready to throw...So if I mimed aiming a gun but not firing, that'd be OK?

For the love of God, It is the Indigenous round, let the players celebrate how they want.
If the precious petals get provoked by that heaven help us all.

Did you just imply that only white and indigenous Australians go to the football?

Lets just take his celebration for what its worth , arrogance and self involved.

Its like a really bad sequel to an already appalling first movie (finger pointing the 13 year old)

The crowd/public aren't racist, there's a reason why Jetta & Franklin can play in the same team every game and not receive one jeer or boo like Goodes receives.

Saying that someone looks like an ape does not make you racist.

I dont even know where to begin with this..

JB is actually correct. If I say that Fraser Gehrig looks like an ape, that is not racist. If I say Adam Goodes looks like an ape, that is not inherently racist either. Saying someone looks like an ape does not make you a racist. Meaning and intent are what defines it as racism.

Many of the most damaging racist terms were based off the way Indigenous people looked.

Laugh all you like but the crowd was provoked by it and a Carlton supporter was ejected as a result.

It was much more than a dance too, as Goodes himself said it was a war cry so it was aggressive in nature and designed to provoke a response.

Honestly don't think that it would have been received the same way last night if it weren't Goodes. Lumumba is in a similar vein - 'The Prince', anyone?

Would love to have seen it from anyone else last night, and doing it earlier on when it didn't seem so much like kicking the Carlton supporters when they were down.

I'm saying they're both gestures promoting one race.

If one is racist, why isn't the other?

If one would cause outrage, why shouldn't the other?
