Has anyone got an update on the current state of our list in terms of available spots? and how that relates to how many players we can draft.

It seems strange that we've not seen any list cuts yet. Its been a month since exit meetings. But if we don't cut any players aren't we a little short on spots available for draftees and NGA's?
No list cuts... other than Gibbs, Stengle, Talia & Lynch, with Mackay also announcing his retirement?

Yes, OTHER than those ...

TBH I was anticipating people to pickup the "minus the obvious" theme of the post.

Referring more to the bottom of the list types that we don't already know about. The types who would have found out at their exit meeting.

Guys like Davis, O'Conner, and Newchurch.

Seem too have all skated through

You've picked the only 3 players left.

ROC's position is dependent upon the outcome of Trade Week. The club likes to go into trading with one list position up their sleeve, in case something falls into their lap. Don't expect an announcement on his position until after Trade Week, once they know how many list positions and draft picks they have left.

Delisting Davis is a no-brainer, but he's on the rookie list, so it doesn't overly matter. Maybe they've have had just enough trade nibbles to make it worthwhile holding off on any delisting announcements? Mind you, that would require finding another club stupid enough to take him off our hands.

Newchurch is on the CatB rookie list, and there's not a lot of competition for those positions this year. They're probably still deciding/war gaming the options for our 2022 NGA options, before they make a decision on his future.

Clearly waiting to see what happens in trade period. These lads would know where they sit, I think having some experience in the SANFL is a consideration when talking about your final 1-2 list spots. We're already losing Kelly, Talia, Lynch and Mackay, if nothing else, ROC and Davis provide good depth to our SANFL side which is important.

Borlase and Parnell?

Does anyone else have no idea how many players are on our list, how many players you can have on a list, who is on the main list/rookie list and also the difference between the two... and not care? Seems too complicated to try to understand

Must be, just feel like in years gone by we've made this decision a lot quicker. Its probably an indication that there are a few tricky moves that the list managers are trying to pull off that may or may not pan out

Fair enough assessments on those 3. Still, it just feels like the picture is a bit murkier then usual coming into trade week. Like there are substantially more balls in the air then usual.

I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised, its been widely reported that we are going to be highly active in trade week for months now. I'm just too conditioned to expected a lot and getting almost nothing in trade week.

It's on this current thread if you look back enough.

There is a contract status thread as well, latest post https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/afc-player-contracts-updates-please.213963/post-71966637

We have 31 senior players in contract, and 4 rookies (Keays, Strachan, Butts, Murray). List size is 42 including 4-6 rookies, plus up to 2 Category B rookies - currently Borlase and Newchurch. So 7 more contracts up for grabs. A senior contract for Dawson is everything but confirmed.

Options for senior/rookies split are 36/6, 37/5 or 38/4

Internal candidates for the remaining 6 contracts:
ROC is the only senior listed player from 2021 without a contract. As others have said, his future is dependent on trade outcomes. The post season 'puff piece' on afc.com.au hints he'll be with us next year, possibly via a delisting and rookie draft pickup.
Parnell is likely to be back in some form or other, most likely as a rookie IMO.
Davis to be cut seems to me the general consensus of this board.
Borlase and/or Newchurch could be elevated if we have our eyes on another category B pickup.

3 of the senior spots are mandated to come from the draft or upgraded rookies. Lots of options there.

So assuming we still have 2 cat B next year (whether the same two again or elevated and replaced) and 3 draft picks in the top 40 or so after getting a compo for Kelly and trading for Dawson, there will be three spots left to fill. If ROC and Parnell return, there is one more, giving us space to pick up another traded or free agent as an established player, or a speculative development prospect from deep in the national draft or first rounder in the rookie draft.

My guess is there will be 4 new faces on the list in addition to Dawson.

I missed that, and nor could I find any reporting on this board or google... Does anyone have a reference? We need to update the contracts thread if so.

So just trying to make sure I’ve got it right:

We currently have 38 players under contract.
Borlase and Newchurch are category B and therefore not included in the 42 allowed.

That leaves 36 with 5 rookies (Keays, Butts, Strachan, Parnell and Murray) which we’ll probably look to upgrade some of those, which you have to use a draft pick to do if I remember correct?

Throw in Dawson and that makes 37.

So we have 5 spots left?

How does the process of moving Borlase and/or Newchurch onto the rookie list/senior list work?

Dammit, last time I posted a thread like this the Kelly news came through minutes later. And now the Borlase/Newchurch/Parnell news.

Simplifies thing though. 32 senior contracts assuming Dawson, plus 5 rookies and the two Cat B guys locked and loaded.

5 more to be added to the senior/rookie mix, with ROC still very much in the frame.

List
33 Confirmed + Dawson = 34 listed players

3 Draft selections + 1 trade ......or 3 Draft selections and re-contracting one of Davis or ROC

So as it stands,
4 vacancies on main list (3 plus Dawson hopefully)

1 on rookie list.

May be shuffles between lists where possible, but we're not taking many draft picks this year.

Try to trade excess picks to bring in the 2 or 3 we use?
Trade them into next year if possible?
Any thoughts in the two NGA guys?
