My own opinion will be Benny Rutten, even tho he is a FB, doesnt mean he cant be the captain. Has already has succes throughout the Leadership campaign last season. Is a quality player, already an AA, and i think a few more AA's to come. Will be a Leader regardless in the future.

IMO Goodwin will take over the captaincy from Ricciuto in 2008 and he will lead the team for 2 years. In 2010 van Berlo will be appointed the next skipper. VB might not quite be ready in 2008 so I think they’ll give it to Goodwin as a short term leader of the club, waiting until VB is ready for the role.

Reilly or the great man NVB if Goodwin gets it after Roo leaves.

Mattner anyone ?

Goodwin to warm the seat for van Berlo. The great man is still working on something to eliminate AIDS from the Third World so chooses not to be captain until at least 2009.

Surprised Nathan Bassett hasn't gained any sort of mention. He'd be second on my list of experienced players to warm the seat for a younger guy to take it.

VB....Goodwin or Edwards will be too old by the time Roo hangs up his boots.
...and just on the Leadership group...what a ********! Leaders are born not made.

Never a truer word spoken TJ. :thumbsu:

Roo has demonstrated it for all of his career - he was born a leader.

VB oozes it in spite of his tender years. It's not to be ignored.

Absolutely correct .....has natural leadership qualities which I also suspect Rutten has as well.

I know Goodwin is spoken of as a short term fill-in capt but don't writeoff Hudson ......he has some excellent leadership qualities

Big Candidates: Rutten, Van Berlo, Goodwin, Reilly

Possibilities: Johncock, Shriley, Mattner, Edwards, Burton, Bassett

Worth A Mention: Bock, Porplyzia, McGregor

Thats how i would see it, for the captaincy

Crows stick with Roo, but who’s next?
Anne Fedorowytsch
Tuesday January 9, 2007

The Adelaide Crows have spoken, selecting their captain for 2007, while Mark Ricciuto got the nod again Anne Fedorowytsch ponders on who will be his successor.

As the 2007 AFL season drawers nearer and nearer each day, teams are getting down to the nitty gritty of their pre-season training. For the Adelaide Football Club, who resumed training on the 4th after their Christmas break, it was time to finalise the leadership group.

The 44 players cast their vote and the leadership group for 2007 is: Mark Ricciuto (Captain), Simon Goodwin, Tyson Edwards, Nathan Basset and Brett Burton.

Missing from the 2006 group are Andrew McLeod, Ben Rutten, Jason Torney and Ben Hart.

This year is expected to be Ricciuto’s last as Captain, as he intends on guiding the next captain through for a season.

So who will be his successor? It’s worth noting that only once have the Crows opted for a short term replacement. Tony McGuinness replaced the Club’s inaugural captain, Chris McDermott, for two years before a long-term replacement came along in Mark Bickley.

Could this leave Simon Goodwin out of the equation? It is thought that the next long term captain will come from the current age group of 20-24 year olds.

At 30 years of age, Goodwin would be 31 if he took over the captaincy at the end of 2006. He could lead the Club for two years, hopefully enough time for a younger team mate to develop further and then carry the Captaincy for a longer period of time.

Rutten or van Berlo for me, with Rutten slightly ahead at this stage. It's probably premature to make a final decision. Ask me again at this time next year.

A few of our candidates have been on the rookie list. Has there been any captain of an AFL side to ever come off the rookie list?

I honestly think it might be a tad early for VB at this stage but of the young brigade he is my preferred choice for captain. We'll see how he goes this year because that could change my opinion.

Just my opinion but Burton never strikes me as a leader. Don't know why, obviously he is thought of as a leader by the playing group though.

NVB - Can't go past the great man.

I forgot to add why I thought Van Berlo.

The man has courage, team spirit and is a born leader.

Roo has also expressed in the past that he found it very important to his own development as a Captain that he had Mark Bickley around for his first year and he wished to do the same to the clubs next captain.

I agree that VB may be too young but I think in light of what Roo has said previously that he will get the nod and spend a year as the captain but with Roo providing assistance and what better way to start your career would that be?

I think it is out of 4 players. Thompson, Rutten, Reilly and Van Berlo. If Goodwin takes the next 2 year period, I think VB will be our next Captain.

I would be happy with either one to tell the truth, let's hope all 4 have big year's and prove to the club (teammates and coaches) and fans that they are worthy of being the next captain of the Crows. Big shoes to fill!!!

True, i would be happy with either 1 of those 4 players to be the next captain, but like you said, it is a MASSIVE shoe to fill, but really who is the player that can fill that shoe, i believe it is either Rutten or Van Berlo, both those men have something a little more then what Thompson and Reilly have.

If the next captain is expected to fill one of Roo's shoes who will fill the other?

There'll only be one shoe for the next captain. To make things a bit fairer on the rest of the competition, VB is going to have one leg amputated before he takes over. He'll still win 3 Brownlows, 6 B&Fs and 12 AA jumpers.

I reckon Bass may have only 1 maybe 2 years left.

van Berlo in today's sunday mail said he did not yet credit hiself with captaincy potential. "Certainly not at the moment," he said. "I just have to continue developing my leadership skills. We'll see what happens over the next few years." :thumbsu:
