Re: First whisper of good news on Tippett

I'm guessing I'm not picking up on the sarcasm but his choice obviously had nothing to do with law school.

And he came from Canberra I thought.

Davis studies Law, or at the very least he had ambitions to be a Lawyer after his football career.

A degree in Law from Adelaide University, in the professional world, is looked down on like a TAFE Diploma in legal studies compared to most other offerings in the country, the best generally considered to be UNSW and Sydney University.

My source for this is my best mate, who studied Law at Adelaide not too long ago.

That's Darwin uni, Adelaide uni law is a well respected course with many many grads moving to work interstate or offshore. He moved for the money - who wouldn't have done the same. He may not have to get a job in 10yrs if he keeps earning this much

Re: First whisper of good news on Tippett

I'm not a law expert, but I'd be surprised to hear that. Adelaide Uni is recognised as one of the better Unis in the country, particularly among more traditional degrees such as law.

Apparently it really isn't. Not that you won't get a job, but when HR shakes the CV pile it doesn't exactly gravitate to the top.

Adelaide Uni on the whole is geographically and culturally more pleasant to attend than the alternatives, and is a ways better in all regards than the Super TAFE they've accidentally mislabeled UniSA, but in all of those Higher Education rankings Adelaide is currently 8th of 19/20/21 nationally, and really miles off the pace once you look at the international context.

It is what it is - a small and pleasant, but lowly funded and middle of the road regional University, with a broad spread of schools and degrees, but no real stand out specialty that they are the best in the country at providing.

Its certainly no all star University like the one I got my degree from.... Flinders Uni is where its at.

Unfortunately it is the graduates of those same universities who look down at "lesser" degrees earned at schools like Adelaide Uni. I think it's just them trying to get back at the fact the Uni of Melbourne Law graduates look down their noses at them.

The University of Adelaide is in the 'Group of Eight' the elite university grouping in Australia. I can assure you that it is not looked down upon at all.

Re: First whisper of good news on Tippett

If I rememeber the deal correctly, Davis is being paid a six figure sum working at a law firm whilst he continues his law studies as part of the deal that got him to GWS. There was also a guaranteed job with said law firm after he was admitted to the bar ( the law one)

And there is Caro going on about a demo car being awarded to Dangerfield

Has dropped out of law and focusing on commerce from what I understand.

Again, I can't speak for law specifically, but in general Adelaide Uni is very highly respected around the country. You might have heard otherwise but it's the truth. They might be ranked 8th, but what matters is they're considered a G8 university.

Particularly in the changing research climate, where we seem to be following the European model of diverting almost all the research funding to the top Universities, and asking the "have nots" to become almost entirely teaching Universities, Adelaide Uni is increasingly more highly respected.

Of course having studied at UniSA, and now worked at UniSA and Flinders, but never Adelaide, I won't get any benefit from it  We struggle to keep the books in the black in terms of research.

Doesn't it go something like:
Flinders for Medicine
Adelaide for Law
UniSA to meet girls
:D

No idea if UniSA is the right place to meet girls in general, but certainly it's not if you're doing anything that places you at Mawson Lakes

That said, my partner did her degree at UniSA though I didn't meet her at Uni.

Adelaide Law Grad - as far as the Adelaide market goes it's the most 'prestigious' degree in SA. Also had mates who got High Court/New South Wales Associateships/Tipstaffships straight out of Adelaide Law School along with graduate positions in the bigger East Coast firms. Granted these were the spectacularly high achievers.

With most Law degrees its your achievement within them rather than where it's from. Having said that I often encounter (and dispel) institutionalized prejudice against Flinders and UniSA grads.

Also a talking point, there are approximately 100,000 practising lawyers in Australia and at present approximately 30,000 students. Very tough job market out there.

truer words have not been spoken

i was always happy to have a class transferred to magill

mmmm magill...

As an Adelaide Uni Law student it's clear that there is a perception that an Adelaide Uni Law degree is more prestigious for a range of varying reasons that really have nothing to do with an individual and everything to do with tradition within South Australian law sector.

I recall an induction lecture in my first week where we were told by a lecturer that because of the entrance ranking being substantially higher than Flinders and UniSA we were held in higher regard. Also it is important to remember that Adelaide Uni Law school originated in 1883 and is the second oldest Law school in Australia, while UniSA law school is relatively new and does not have graduates in high positions within the sector, thus reducing its capacity to further its reputation.

Let me say I know plenty of people who are graduates or still studying at both Flinders and UniSA law schools and they are very knowledgeable. My comments were based solely on general perception. :)

Haha, my brother is studying Primary School teaching there. Apparently 20%-80% ratio across the campus :thumbsu:

The male population at Magill has shot up since I went there - it was 10%-90% back in the early 2000's. I'd often be one of two-three males in most classes
