thoughts on going in hard for troy menzel who is off contract this year? SA boy and I reckon he would be awesome and would give us an extra dimension up forward with a gray/wingard type small forward who can move in to the midfield when danger/douglas rest. at 186 is also a good mark and a great kick. chances??

I would love to get him. One of my favourite Carlton players to watch. There is a lot of Wingard about him. He was a 1st round draft pick, however, so will be hard to get.

So, what's the current groupthink here? Should our first pick be a fast outside mid, a tall forward/KP, or best available?

I've wanted a fast outside mid all year but I'm starting to lean towards a tall forward.
I think we need a quality rebounding half back who can also defend...think Grant Birchall or Luke McDonald. At the moment we have defenders who can attack or defenders who can defend. We need one who can do both well, and they tend to cost a high pick. Some one like this would allow Smith to move into the midfield and that solves our need for an outside mid. Jaensch can then move into Smiths role and he wont be exposed so often.

Maynard, who we tried to get F/S could be around our 2nd pick and seems best suited to the role you suggest

Brisbane didn't meet our terms for Tippett in 2011. The Aish poaching will be sweet revenge.

No offence but I just had to call this out. A pretty breathtaking attempt at blame shifting isn't it?

We were offering Pick 8, or Pick 12 plus a second rounder. In retrospect, considering the ticking timebomb Adelaide had on it's hands with Tippett's contract and what that eventually cost you (Lost tippett plus a stack of draft picks)... Pick 8 or pick 12 +30 and offloading the Tippett timebomb would have been a pretty fair result.

We refused to trade Polec and Redden. I think (despite eventually losing Polec anyway), the way both of them have developed showed we were right to not just give them away.

I am starting to have doubts we can retain Aish but I don't think it would be fair to describe it as deserved "revenge" if you manage to get him for cheap just because we didn't overreach to bail you out of a bad situation.

Plenty of us around here do acknowledge exactly the bolded bit above. That's why I always say Trigg's incompetence cost us 5 picks. Now we know just what we were hiding that whole time it makes the decision to not cut and run away with pick 8 look even more stupid:mad:.

Pretty much spot on. We are the only ones to blame for not trading tippet, especially as i doubt we didn't know he was a ticking time bomb, but we got too greedy and got screwed over as a result. Especially seeing at the point, Polec and Redden were tipped to be apart of your (now with a slight setback) rebuild and both are quite decent players.

I have doubts you will hold on to Aish purely because there is a bigger go home factor then normal (with his dad being a legend of the SANFL) but arguably you are in a better position now then you were last year because i'd imagine you're putting a lot more effort in retaining recruits.

Liam Duggan is the one.

It's a fair call out too

You do realise he is ANDREW Aish's son not the son of Michael Aish.

Andrew went OK but hardly a "legend" even in SANFL terms...

My mistake. Uncle of a legend is still roughly... kind of the same point.

Absolutely spot on we were never going to get Redden and Polec from the deal it was stupid to think we could, but pick 8 and 30 would have been a pretty fair result where both teams would have come out well, especially us given what happened after.

Did anyone record the U18 championship game Sth Aust v Vic Country today?

My recorder suddenly stopped

I'm just bitter about Tippett (see avatar).

I don't hold anything against Brisbane, or Sydney for that matter. Our administration are solely responsible for the talent deficit at our club.

All fair, but you offered 8 or 12 + priority which was was #21 or something
