Guru panel Revamped
December 03, 2007 01:15am
from the Advertiser by Andrew Capel

NEIL Craig has changed the structure of his coaching panel. Former defensive and midfield coach Paul Hamilton is the team's new forward line coach, replacing David Noble.

Noble, who was criticised for his work with an under-performing Adelaide attack last season, will now oversee the midfield with assistance from last season's defensive coach Peter Jonas.

Jonas also will work with Alan Stewart in helping to develop the Crows' younger players.

Former champion backman Ben Hart will take over from Jonas as the team's defensive guru while Matthew Clarke replaces Mick Redden as ruck coach.

"There's some newness there in terms of personnel and change in responsibilities, which I think will be good for us," Craig said.

"And I felt we needed two people to look after the midfield because of the way the midfield is evolving and the workload involved in terms of review, debrief, player feedback and matchday work."

All good moves, but I still feel NC needs a match day assistant to help him out with his moves, fours eyes are better than two and maybe NC is missing some of what is going on out there Im unsure, but I think it needs to be looked at.

The Ben Hart move is an excellent one

I'll always believe he should have won the 1998 Norm Smith, without his game, especially in the 1st half, the Crows would not have been in a position to come back & over-run the Roos.

I raise you Peter Caven.

why does NC need an assistant for match day moves... what the hell are the other assistants doing in the box on march days... surely they have accountability of their areas and should be flagging moves to NC.

Hamilton as forward coach is a great move, the AFC have a very high opinion of Paul Hamilton, they believe he has the capability to COACH AT afl SENIOR LEVEL

Hate to put people down, but "YAAAAYYYY!!!" And i thought it would never happen, not sure Hamilton is the right person, but am more than willing to give him a shot, Noble definitely had to go, I would say we possible had the worse forward structures imaginable at times and these possibly cost us a premiership, good luck to hamilton and the rest of them in new positions, definitely pleased with the revamp, because it just wasn't happening before.

edit: also, just re-read the post, was a bit harsh on Noble, good luck to him with the midfield, Craig obviously values him, so I will trust that he knows what he is doing.

The changes can only improve the coaching panel, so I'm happy with the changes.

I would have still like there to be a full-time strategist in the box though.

Maybe next year if a Jonas suggests Massie be moved off of Franklin in the 2nd quarter, Craig might actually do that??

If he still ignores such logical suggestions then we are still going to lose game we just shouldn't.

I tend to agree with this. The way modern day coaching boxes are structured these days - I think the detail involved in the various roles provides the coach with a bunch of stats and info on matchups - but not much in the way of focused strategic assistance. Often coaches - and especially Craig are criticised for making unilateral decisions or non decisions. I think that a fragmented approach in terms of who is watching what might be partly to blame

Somehow I get the feeling we'll still be discussing that one in ten years time. :p

Im neither here nor there on it, my concern is which voice is the right one? If an assistant can listen to those stats and placements and offer insights...why wouldnt you appoint him senior coach?

I think some people are a bit harsh on Noble, from snippets of info I have heard over the last couple of years is that Noble plays a massive role in relation to our pre-game tactics

I know i have been harsh on Noble and he obviously gives really well to the team, I just don't think he was the right man for our forward line and don't believe he was doing a particularly good job there. As a midfield coach, I am sure he will probably do a great job.

I guess you could see it like our own workplaces I mean you and I if we see something that could be done a better way then we would offer that peice of advice, maybe because we see it different to what a senior person does, or they may miss something, that I see, doesnt mean I should be the CEO though.

Could apply that to the AFC coaches box:)

If its anything like my work place I would make the suggestion and Rucci would take the credit :D

We have the senior coach who is basically analysing all the data fed to him...if there is an issue it is either the data that is given or the person analysing it . Having a filter wont change how the senior coach ultimately analyses the info

Like anything I guess, you can offer up all the advice you want, but if it isnt getting through it would be like banging your head against a brick wall, I would hope any person no matter what would be open to advice to improve something.
