Nice to see the AFL once again take a positive stance on an important social issue.
No it isn't.

Nobody cares what the corrupt corporates at AFL House think on social issues, they should stay out of it and focus on football.

I wonder what the response would be if they changed it to 'No'.

Several millennial would have probably burnt AFL House down by now, to 'fight bigotry'.

North Melbourne took a yes stance as well yesterday.

Today the North Melbourne Football Club became a signatory to Australian Marriage Equality (AME) via the letter below.

The North Melbourne Football Club writes to express its support for marriage equality.

One of the core values of the North Melbourne Football Club is “Belonging”. This is not just a word we have grabbed out of the dictionary or randomly selected and pay lip service to – because since its inception in 1869, our club has opened its arms to people from all walks of life.

We recognise the right of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) players, members and supporters to play and enjoy sports without experiencing prejudice and discrimination. This includes the right to marry the partner of their choice.

The value “belonging” goes right to the heart of what we’re all about as a progressive and inclusive club. We’ve worked hard over the years to create a unique connection between people and a united community through the life-changing programs developed by our award winning Huddle, which works with migrant youths, refugees, students and Indigenous and multicultural communities throughout Victoria, Tasmania and Wyndham in particular.

From our humble beginnings in a working class suburb to one that has become so diverse and multicultural - we have embraced all cultures, religions and beliefs.

We do not judge, discriminate or segregate – if you are a North Melbourne person, you are a part of our family and it’s for this reason we are truly proud to support a “Yes” vote in favour of same sex marriage.

We stand for equality, diversity and inclusion – we believe everyone belongs.

I wasn't prepared for the relief I felt upon hearing this. That "vote no" sky writing was so utterly dehumanising that I've been deflated all week. If you think this won't make a difference to thousands of struggling Australians you're kidding yourselves. If you think it is the wrong platform then consider what it will mean to the young footballers who might now give footy a chance.

Yeah thats great, and I am a YES man all the way..
However Im just sick and tired of the pontificating from high from the AFL. It really rubs me the wrong way given the extremely heavy handed bullying they dish out to individuals and clubs that dont tow they line as they expect. They are a pig of a corporation.

So the AFL is pro gay marriage, yet has a culture where no player or even club official have ever felt comfortable enough in the AFL culture to openly come out as gay.

Not 1 out of the 1000+ people directly involved in AFL??

Reeks of tokenism.

I have no idea what you're talking about. Yeh I dislike how they run the 'competition' as much as anyone else but equating that to 'pontificating' about civil rights is a ridiculous leap.

I hope the yes vote passes in a landslide but this is utterly dangerous territory for the AFL. What else should they be informing the public to vote on? Euthanasia? Abortion? Tax Hikes? Jail sentences?

It's very wrong.

Hopefully we never again have a Government so shithouse that it outsources its own powers to a popular vote as a means of dealing with its own internal conflict on the issue.

Are they all civil liberties afforded to one section of the community and not another?

Correct message. Wrong messenger.
Agree with this, not sure the public changing of the logo is anything other than a publicity to stunt to earn plaudits. Also don't think it's the best way to support a social cause.
It just looks like a gimmick.

Got to laugh at the 'fix the sport first comments'. As if the two are mutually exclusive and spending 5 minutes issuing a statement on SSM somehow preventing them from running the game.

Close second is the 'stick to sport' comments. The AFL or any other private organisation has no responsibility to stay politically neutral. Time to accept if the league and your club is standing on the pro equality side there may just be a reason for it.

Sweetie, are you still angry at having to play Richmond at the MCG?

As long as the AFL receive federal and state funding they have a social responsibility.

This reminds me of the stance the AFL took with the racial vilification of Nicky Winmar, which almost certainly led to a change in attitudes towards racism.

You're a massive dickhead if you reckon a business with the reach of the AFL should stay out of politics.

You are a dick head if you think sporting bodies should be a political measure. So you would be OK with the AFL siding with one side of the government before an election and being vocal about it?
