How do people feel about AFL clubs employing their own commentary teams ala American sports? Would people prefer listening to their 'own' or are happy being served up random (mostly Victorian) commentary teams? I'd personally love to hear a Port play by play caller (maybe a young up and comer) and two special comments guys like Tredders and Timmy G EVERY port game.

I like it. I'm sure Timmy G and Tredders would be objective, heck they have been many of times before! Maybe then the commentators may get our players names right!

Fox did a 'press red for eddie' thing where for select collingwood games you could choose to listen to eddie and hear him be overly biased and cheer for collingwood along with other collingwood people/players.

Something along those lines would be fun for big games and showdowns etc. Should be a selective/limited thing if it exists at all though.

Just give me a ****ing Foxtel option where I can listen to the crowd noise and no commentary at all farken.

But no that won't happen because the commentators have to shill for shit.

Timmy G was joined by Tredders at 5AA this year for Port games. I haven't listened to them other than turning on the radio at half time of the Melbourne game for a few minutes and I forgot to take my radio to game on Saturday.

Both don't guild the Lilly when we are playing poorly and have enough bias when we are playing well.

I assume the OP means for TV. The AFL would have to do a deal with broadcasters and you would have to have the right infrastructure to do it ie a specific remote.

7 wouldn't waste money on it or have a specfic channel for it.

But Fox Footy / Foxtel might. They have done the press Red to listen to Ed call with McGuire, Shaw and Christian for a few games and did the same for Tigers game with Kevin Bartlett and a couple of others, think Richo was one.

They had an interactive channel - don't know if they still have it, that allowed you to control what you saw. Think it was channel 505 and it was introduced so that you could watch whichever one of 5,6 or 7 EPL games that you wanted to and were on at the same time and they couldn't dedicate a channel to all the games.

But the Press Red for Ed and the Tigers call was for only a few games and only for 1 or 2 seasons, maybe 2013 or 2014 and didn't continue it.

would be refreshing to hear little tidbits about our own players, more than a brief on what year and pick Victorian draftees went for when they get a touch. i think one of the best things about this (good commentary about us) is knowing other people are finding out the things we know, though. if we listen to Port commentary but nobody else does, they will barely hear anything about our club.

That would be great!

It's not only the boganistic commentary where every footballers first name ends in a 'y' that I find annoying, its the fact that the umpires can be heard the entire game. The shrill of the whistle every five seconds, along with "play on, play on, play on" has made watching football with volume on impossible.

What other big league pro sports have their umpires mic'd up for the entire game? Umpiring should be invisible but the AFL or TV networks seem to want to elevate them to a point they are part of the entertainment.

Watching an AFL game on TV now and all you can hear is commentators and umpires shouting, you can barely hear the crowd.

Eventually the AFL should offer a team pass streaming service, where supporters can either pay for every game or just the team of their choice. Then every club has a set commentary team (with a few interchangeable's) and its more focused towards the targeted audience. The current commentary set up is a joke and is geared towards the Melbourne TV audience. Imagine not ever getting lumped with muppets like Roo and co ever again.

P.S Macca19 would be great pick imo :D

Man Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool have their own channels on Fox and Man City, Arsenal and Spuz have their own shows.

They play that weeks games on each channel and show with their clubs own commentators. It’s ****ing awful on all of them. City is the worst and I’m a City supporter. BBC and Sky commentary kills them all.

We don’t need our own commentators we just need capable unbiased ones on Fox and 7.

We miss you more than ever Clinton Grybas.

Tredrea and Timmy G are more special comments guys. There would need to be a "play by play" commentator thrown in there that calls the action.
Timmy has called games for AA in the past. Don't know if he has done so this year.

Edit and SANFL games on 7. He has been a caller on them in the past.

Yep sadly missed. I still can hear him saying, take a bow Byron, whenever I see a Pickett highlight video, and he's not even commentating.

Bugger it. Here is is from 1.42 to 2.12

I thought Hutchy was setting up an AO commentary team for fans at the stadium to listen to
