WOAH!
Can you imagine the uproar over that!

Well can anyone give stats on players recruited from Qld and NSW in the last fwe years?..

They are the only teams in the corresponding states... so they do actually have a right..

The other idea is to actually cap player payments to say 500k per person...
Would last as long as the first manager not being satisfied with his commission of "only" $500k. It wouldn't be legal and would never get past the AFLPA let alone escape a manager inspired court challange.

If the extra money is really to stop players going home then there should be a higher base for all players, including first year players, who are not from the home State. Then contracts could be negotiated for stars on the same basis as other clubs.

Sooking?.. When did St Kilda come into the equation?.. Do you attack people out of the blue for no reason at all all the time?

Sounds to me that someone is sooking that they didn't aquire Riewoldt...

Sorry it wasn't a personal attack on you or your club. Just saying that if the Lions used all of that extra money to lure Riewoldt back to Qld many people would complain. It was just an example.

All it proves is that the extra picks you get for finishing last or winning less than 5 games is too great an advantage.

Note, though, that we had Voss, Lappin, Akers and Black before we got the spoon. Note, too, that we selected Black at No. 31 in the Draft. But for their inexperience, the crew was in place from before, but Lethal really made the difference.

Brisbane will probably loose a few players after this year. I reackon they should consider trading one of the fab four if it means they can keep hedland. Probably lappin would be the most expendable.

Lappin? No way! He's been with us nearly nine years and he's a superstar. You don't get rid of guys like that. I really believe that the players will knuckle down and take a pay cut. This team is too unique an alignment of the footy planets to let it go so easily. Let's see what transpires...

I think the Lions and Swans should get some help to level the playing field in regards to retaining young players from interstate. Too many times have players the calibre of O'Bree or Hilton turned their backs on the clubs that developed them, citing homesickness. (BTW I think players that whinge about homesickness are weak as *****, if you can't handle moving interstate and earning 70 -100k per year by the time you are 21, don't nominate for the draft and stay at home close to mummy!). It is unbelievably frustrating to watch your club put an enormous amount into developing a young player, and then watching them want to go home. The fairest way to do that would be to give every club $15 000 extra salary cap room for every player on their list that they draft from interstate. This would hopefully help alleviate players returning to their home state through extra financial incentives, and allow NSW and QLD to continue developing as football states with teams that are given a chance of competing. This doesn't take into account the greater marketing opportunities for players in traditional football states however.

Mind you, with a few Collingwood fans complaining about Brisbane being given a leg up through the extra salary cap room, I wouldn't mind getting guaranteed return games against the bigger drawing clubs each year. Not only would we have had the luxury of playing Richmond and Carlton twice this year, we would also continually have a huge head start on most other clubs in money earning. This would enable us to build and develop new state of the art training and administration bases, thus making the club much more attractive than some of the less well off clubs.

Then it would be unfair as some clubs can recruit from their own state, and some cant. (ie Sydney during 1999 2000).
Totally unworkable, we are better off with the current system which is much simpler as it identifies the two clubs who operate in vastly different markets than the others.

I agree with your fist paragraph. The reason Brisbane and Collingwood are playing the GF is a combination of coaching staff, draft picks, and in Brisbanes case flow-on effects of the merger. Nothing to do with salary cap extensions.

As far as lappin goes, I know it would be a tragedy to loose him, but realistically you need a brownlow to play in the brisbane midfield, and he hasnt cut the mustard yet. :) You guys really have to keep hedland at all costs. He will be the next voss of the comp.

Loosing lappin in exchange for a very good draft pick would ensure Brisbane wins several more premierships in the next 7 or 8 years. You have to keep rotating your list.

Put it in a situation. (without the cap)
There is a gun kid that is playing for Sydney, he is from Vic. He gets an offer to play for Hawthorn, and they can offer the same as Sydney. Where will he go? To Hawthorn of course, this way he gets to go home and be on the same money.

Situation (with the extra cap)
There is a gun kid in Sydney and he has a choice in staying at Sydney or going back to Hawthorn. Sydney can offer him $10,000 more. So he stays in Sydney.

The problem with this argument is if you apply it to Brisbane, so to repeat the scenario

Put it in a situation. (without the cap)
There is a gun kid that is playing for Brisbane, he is from Vic. He gets an offer to play for Hawthorn, and they can offer the same as Brisbane. Where will he go? He'll stay with Brisbane of course. They are a well run team and he feels part of the club.

Situation (with the extra cap)
There is a gun kid in Brisbane and he has a choice in staying at Brisbane or going back to Hawthorn. Brisbane can offer him $10,000 more. Is this some kind of joke question?

Homesickness is a real issue of course, but it really only affects the younger players, especially those that are developing and haven't cemented (or even gained) a spot in the senior side yet. And you know what? These players are also the players who aren't on the higher wages and make up only a fraction of the player payments.

So if there is to be a salary cap adjustment, it should reflect the only on the lower end of payments, maybe an extra $10,000 for each player under 21, and only if they come from outside the state.

The other thing highlighted by my argument is the fact that Brisbane is nowadays a well run club. It's been developed using young talent rather than expensive imports. Sydney will always do well if it buys in top names, but it suffers as a club from this practice as the club develops a mercenary culture and will only be successful for relatively short periods (eg Edelsten and Lockett). In other words, if Sydney wasn't so badly run (and that is a whole different thread) then it wouldn't struggle so much to keep young talent. This is why players such as Leppitsch say they could get more money if they move interstate but would prefer to stay in Brisbane.

There is also the need to develop both states at a grass roots level. But that needn't mean giving these states an added bonus. A workable solution maybe that both states get the bonus of exclusive rights to pick players from their respective states in the first three rounds of the draft with the proviso that they must draft at least two payers from their state.
