Well it has a few different options. Spare in defense, spare around the ball, tagger etc. I've never noticed any difference onfield though.

Spare in defense definitely makes a difference, one of your wingers drifts back and takes intercept marks or double teams the full forward

Interesting, I shall have to play around and pay more attention to that. Could also be my wingers just suck ass 😂

I've just started playing and tinkering with strategies and line ups

* I like a fast mobile ruckman as you can get quick clearances if you take a centre bounce and hit it to open space (if there's some) and you sprint to it first

* I find when coming out of defence long kicks to the outer area close to the boundary of the wing are usually vacant and with a quick Wingman or HFF can generate easy I50 entries to a lead or a 1 v 1

* A good torp off the HBF or centre square never hurts and gives your defence time to reset

Also, and this is probably considered exploiting the AI, so may not be your jam, but if you hit the tackle button a few times nearby to an opposition player that just took a mark, there's a chance you'll get a HTB as they sometimes for some inexplicable reason instantly play on.

Repeat after me:

"I am sorry Wicked Witch for disparaging you, and your games. Clearly you are the best developers to create a decent AFL football game. I am sorry."

It's easy to say, and it makes you feel so much better.
It’s not true though

It's far better than 23, because you can actually control the players, the sliders actually work, but Live 2011 had better AI that would set up walls. Evo 2 really needed dynamic AI/custom formations/individual instructions.

After a couple of weeks it's great to play

Sliders work amazing - i have run speed around 35/40 - Wind at 100 (can be super hard kicking for goal some games)

I started on RISING STAR with Essendon and won it pretty easy 1st year - Daniher won the Brownlow and the Coleman as a FWD/RUCK - 68 goals and 300+ hitouts

Now up to SENIOR but I completely gutted my list for youth a truckload of 1st and 2nd round picks and have basically rookie mids with a couple of experienced vets (Shiel, Heppell and Zaharakis) helping out so the centre bounces and clearances are way tougher

I traded to strengthen my backline and have more speedy forwards

Ruck/CHF combo of Daniher and McKernan works well for me - as they move fast they often are open in transition from backline to forward line when rucking and an easy hit up option. Hogan as my FF has beem a boom recruit.

Kicking deep to wide vacant wings still works for me if you have speedy wingmen and flankers who can get to the ball first

I made a custom Tasmania Devils team for Coach Career mode which has been fun so far. After the inaugural season, where we lost the granny to Geelong, I tried bringing in a few mature age free agents to bolster the team as it's still largely a lot of 18-22 year olds running around. Signed Dayne Zorko on nearly $500K and some reason he's been mostly a dud so far

Been better off playing some of my rookies. Oh well, adds to some of the drama of it.

I'm now 4 seasons in up to ALL AUSTRALIAN level

  • Hard to retain players due to salary cap - as once your rookies get good they get greedy - so I give them 5 year deals
  • I've now lost Sam Taylor for 52 weeks who was my star CHB
  • Easy to get burnt on the rebound so i play slow, methodical and via the wing most times
  • I go with 2 rucks with speed who interchange on the bench
  • In my 3rd year i got Hogan to 100 goals (admittedly in the last 6 weeks I did nothing but look for him)
  • Developing speedy, agile MID and MID/FWD and RUCKS are easy enough - KEY DEF and KEY FWD are hard to find in the draft (I like fast ones that can create space) so I've been trading for them
  • Having WIND on 100 makes it really challenging kicking for goal

TIPS:
  • Injuries are rampant so you need 30 very good players on your list
  • At the end of the year trade your VFL standard players (80 or below) that have 1 year left for worse rated players who are on low coin at other clubs with 3 or 4 years on the books to save some $ for that big trade or free agency buy
  • Drafting MIDS and MID-FWDs who are speedy come on fast with development - my midfield is basically 4 draftees built up with 2 established MIDS
  • High rated MIDS and MID/FWDs who arent quick will still nab you some nice draft picks from other clubs

MY CURRENT TEAM

GEN DEF - Aish, Ahern, Henry, Impey, SPS
KEY DEF - Taylor, Ballard, Austin, Macreadie
MIDS - 4 draftees developed
MID/FWD - Brayshaw, Fisher
KEY FWD - Chol, Hogan (I'll often stick a marking KEY DEF at CHF as an alternative)
GEN FWD - Hunt, Hill, Cockatoo, Narkle, Rankine
RUCKS - Sean Darcy and 3 draftees developed
BENCH/RESERVES - all developed draftees

I'd also add that when recruiting, the "potential" rating can be a bit off, especially in terms of underrating a player. Which I guess is a bit like real life, the scouts can get it wrong.

There was a guy who was rated 72 or something in the national draft during one of my coach career playthroughs, and had a potential rating of only 75, which seems pretty ridiculous.

I picked him up though and he turned out to be an athletic 196cm second ruck/CHF that achieved a rating of 95 and was bloody handy.

Evolution 2 is by far the best AFL game released so far.
I'd say both Live 2011 and Evo 2 because they have their strengths and weaknesses. Evo 2 has the best on the run mechanic, best fatigue meter, best sliders, best information huds, while Live 2011 had the best AI formations and the only turning on the spot mechanic in your protected area after a mark in AFL game history. I wish Evolution 2 implemented those things from Live 2011. 23 and 26 on the other hand are both unplayable garbage.

Hi folks,
Finally got around to playing AFL26, and it is like everyone tried to warn me, a putrid stinking puddle of !%#$#*🤬@$$#$🤬🤬

My question is, is there any way to mod the guernseys on AFL Evo 2?
Yes there is, someone had a big in depth guide on it a while back, have a look in the AFL gaming subforum, if you don't have any luck pm me and i'll find an old doc of all the steps needed.

Once completed you can customise quite a bit, songs, jerseys, flags, ads etc.

What was the difference you noticed that was worse? I've come to have a new found respect for Wicked Witch just for getting the fundamental user commands right. I can't believe 23 and 26 has anyone defending it, must be relatives of BA employees.

Everything. It somehow found a way to be worse than afl'23. Completely lacking any natural football movement and rhythm, completely dependant on you watching the stupid circles like some weird Japanese early 2000s arcade puzzle game, AI players (both yours and oppositions) simply stop and stand still in a daze as the ball flies past them (even in Aussie Rules Footy on NES made a third of a century ago the npc players were in near constant motion). In a pallid attempt to recreate the stand rule, when you try to play on after taking a mark you are simply cemented to the spot for long enough to allow the opponent to tackle you, as opposed to programming decent physics. They focused solely on graphics and as a result it's an unmitigated disgrace with only one redeeming feature- they let you ask for a refund this time. They probably knew a class action lawsuit was headed their way if they stole money from people again.

For all its faults, Evo is a decent game and really had something they could have built on, but maybe since BA was given a second crack at an AFL game WW will be given a second chance in the future? Honestly I would love to know how it all works and how BA were allowed to keep the licence. I wish instead of giving 6 million quid to a washed up Katy Perry to float around on a giant goonbag miming to hits from 15 years ago, they would actually take some interest in sorting out the video game situation. A decent game will sell.

Yeah, they ironically run around everywhere like ants like their name sake.

The players freezing or stuck in the mud was a nightmare, especially those forced frozen marking contests, unlike in Evo 2 where you were mobile in marking contests and could out body players for the better position like actual football. Even the graphics aren't that good, and the motion capture is somehow worse than what Wicked Witch used for Evo 2.

Tru Blu are trying, they're releasing unlicensed sports games developed by Wicked Witch's successor Glinda Games. 2025's Rugby League Raw by Glinda Games people are saying is far superior to Big Ant's Rugby League 26.

Big Ant have been sponsoring Carlton, so there's a bit of a nepotistic relationship going on with the AFL, even though they made national news and had the AFL themselves having to do damage control over 23. It really blows my mind they have any supporters, there's people overtly lying that this isn't 23, when it's a 23 update for $100, literally has the exact same problems as 23, like the coaches being goal umpires, players running at super speeds randomly, sharp edges around the shadows, wind meter at a very low opacity, frozen players.

The super speed thing is ridiculous, its like the game engine holds the "animations" back, then they zoom off, often quicker than the opposition AI that took off racing for the ball at the same time as "player one".

I've also seen the same goal celebration bug - the real animation (that IS also in the game, same as in 23) where the camera does a 360 rotation around either the sole player or the player and teammates celebrating the goal. The BUG version is like an amusement park ride where the camera just rotates 360 degrees around the ground, mostly focusing on the crowd in the stands. But it too is being done at lightning fast speed.

AND I think a lot of the graphics look ok for the most part. But sometimes (unsure if its the lighting at the ground at the time) sometimes the players look like newspaper cut outs against the playing surface. It looks like an older ABC tv show (where the characters were like paper mache cut outs, interacting with different scenic backgrounds). Very uncanny valley.

The writing was on the wall with all that testimony from ex-employees on Glassdoor, the production and management is so poor with a lot of tech debt and the lack of middleware. The bootlicking I saw over 23/26 blows my mind since it's total shovelware, it's like if someone defended Superman 64, but most of the supporters have vanished, I wonder why that is. One of the Big Ant employees is in there not long ago telling me I'm wrong about everything, but of course they can't tell me what that is which just falls in line with the shady behaviour of the company. This is why I'm on the Glinda Games bandwagon since they use Unreal Engine 5, not some broken in-studio engine and Rugby League Raw is considered better than Rugby League 26.
