I got it from GameTraders, Eastland. Didn't see more than one. So far I've got that circle is handball/tackle?, cross is kick, triangle is... sprint? Although it doesn't seem to work. No idea what square is for.

The poor mans AFL 99 was on playstation. It had no fights in it.

The PC version was far superior.

I own both :)

yeah i had a copy of the pc version but it didn't really work properly, like if you changed the formation of the players around too much (ie made a guy loose in defence) it kinda stuffed everything up to the point where you couldn't change or do anything.

also, just found this by chance, found it very amusing

used to love going the bump instead of the tackle in those games, you could clean up like 3 guys at once

EDIT: including your own players IIRC!!

Same here. 99 for the PS1 was so much like 98 for the PC I would venture EA got up to some marketing shenanigans when pushing the two '99' titles - the PC one was a whole different game to the one on the PS1

It was really buggy. Showing my age but I followed the development of the title as close as I could and at one stage EA even boasted introducing 'live' stats and injuries that updated your players each week based on the real comp. By the end though, this sort of content was removed from the EA site and the game that arrived was fragile to say the least. The sound and graphics were great for the time and you could tell they had big plans for much of the dev cycle. But then you hit all the bugs and the fact it was almost impossible to kick a goal unless you were on a perfect 45 degree angle (if I remember correctly) - but it was still dead easy to win and you almost took a screamer by default when marking - and you could see it all fell apart closer to the launch date. My guess, EA (Creative Assembly I think it was) ran out of time and EA treated the market (i.e. us) with contempt, refused CA a dev extension and just released it before Christmas regardless.

As terrible as I've found AFL99 on playstation, it's really really addictive. I now understand why a thread overflowed regarding a possible new release. I foresee many months of frustration ahead.

Just thought I'd let you know that I have emailed the game devs asking when something will be released in regards to screenshots and what sort of time frame are we looking at for a release date.

Will post if I get a reply.

Honestly with nothing released yet it doesn't seem good. :o

I have it on good authority it will be out around the finals!
I have it on good authority that the PS4 will be released tomorrow! Also the XBOX 720 and the Poo as a follow up to the Wii, all being released tomorrow!

Don't expect a reply any time soon. I know of many people who have contected them and haven't heard anything back. Useless PR

Yeah, no reply yet.

Assholes.

It's just not coming is it....

How much money would the AFL be losing out on by not having a game released each year?

Surely, with all the money they get from broadcast rights etc they could get this out there.

They need to make it a priority.. we've had 1 good game (99) in 120 years of football..

I've heard some news via someone over at Xbox World, I'll copy and paste what was said....

Word from one of the testers, ATM they are having GREAT difficulty with the commentary. They are pretty far in and happy with how the game play is going but from the sounds of it they are trying to replicate real life commentary and are having trouble with voice levels and such for different situations. Stuff like commentators getting more exited as you get closer to goal.

ATM its in house testing only.
Iv got my contact to shoot out an email for me tonight asking for more details. He told me all of this after hearing me moaning about the lack of AFL games at work. Turns out his lecturer at uni works for bigant. And he was talking to him about the AFL game a few weeks back.

I explained to him about the lack of info and or anything and he gave me something atleast. I asked him to quiz the guy from bigant so fingers crossed I'll have some more for us this week.

As someone who works in the games industry, I can say with 99.9% certainty why no information has been released.

The publisher has told them that they aren't allowed to talk about it.

I'm sure the other game developers on this site will back me up here, they would talk about it if they were allowed to.

Just my 2c.

^^ what benefit does anyone gain from that approach? if there's an obvious answer that i'm clearly missing then excuse my ignorance

So no marketing at all is going to help sell this game when it comes out?

The build up that the likes of Modern Warfare 2 and RDR had would have surely boosted their sales in the first week. If you haven't heard of a game or heard anything that it's like it's hard to see how people will buy it...

Will buy it though....

I don't know, but the publishers are the ones who pay for the development and if they ask Big Ant not to say anything, they wont say anything.

Different publishers do things different ways. Some like to make a big deal of a game early on and some like to keep things quiet.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you make a big deal of it early on, you have to keep up marketing, which takes time and money. It also distracts the development team as they have to make special marketing builds. These can take a lot of time and effort to make.

Also releasing early screens of games can be very counter productive. Early on in the development of a game, obviously the final look of the game hasn't been achieved. Now if you release screen shots of a game in this state, it can very much back fire on you. I worked on a game about 5 years ago where the early videos massively backfired as the public just didn't understand that this was only 6 months in to an 18 month development. The quality of the game was obviously improved over the last 12 months of development, but to this day, if you look this game up on sites such as IGN, the screens used for the game are the ones that were released early on. This doesnt help the game sell at all.

[EDIT]
One other thing.

Again, from my experience, the last 3 months of development can improve the visual look of a game immensely. This is because all of the final artwork has made it in to the game and the programmers know exactly how much memory they have to play with.

Because of this, *sometimes* the features that they didn't think they had the memory (and / or cpu time) to put in can be put in after all. I'll admit this doesn't happen all the time, but it does make a difference.

I have been reading this thread (and the last AFL thread) for a while now, and I know what some people will say. They care about gameplay, not graphics. The only problem with this is, how do you effectively show gameplay using videos / screenshots? You can't. The only thing that is really shown off from these is the visual look of the game.

What do you think we would all be talking about right now if they release a few "below par" screens? Even though they don't represent the final product?

^^ makes sense

Perhaps all this is what they were really banking on: that some frustrated forum users would bitch about the lack of information all year and build up the hype amongst the target audience themselves. They're probably watching us right now....

[EDIT in response to Qwinton's edit]

I believe the request for screenshots was because people wanted some kind of confirmation that the game was actually getting made. And some other people, knowing that screenshots don't define how good a game is, threw out the phrase that gameplay > graphics.

If early screenshots were released, all the self-appointed critics would have a field day, whereas people like me (the gameplay > graphics) people, would at least be satisfied that there's actually some effort being made into keeping the audience's attention. Most people know that gameplay can't be exhibited through screenshots.
