im writing an essay on australian sport, concentrating on AFL, and i was hoping someone from this board would have some idea about AFL players who are also studying at uni, full time or part time. i read an article in "inside football" about a melbourne player who was studying law full time, but cant find the back issues on the internet. if anyone can help me out with some names, or links to articles, that would be great...

thanks guys

Re: players doing uni degrees...

I belive Harry Talor has been studying or has finished his studys in physio.Hogan has put his Medical studys on hold.He had a 98% entry score:eek:

Re: players doing uni degrees...

Not sure if this helps but a couple of years ago Matt "Goose" Maguire of St Kilda was a classmate of my niece, who was doing architecture. I don't know whether he's still doing it.

and kittycat, any articles you remember reading on these? if i use what youve told me without referencing a "credible" (no offence to you :p damn univeristies are way to strict on what you can say, and what you can quote from, otherwise its just been made up.) source then it doesnt go down well. any hints on where i could find at least one article which says they were studying?

the strange thing about uni referencing, is that a newspaper article is a very credible source... i would have said the exact opposite, but i dont makes the rules, i just deal with them...

Re: players doing uni degrees...

While looking for any reference on Maguire's uni studies I found this on Luke Ball instead:

On my career outside of football: Life outside of football is something that clubs, with the support of the PA, are driving more and more these days. With footy taking up a huge amount of time if not physically but mentally as well, no doubt it is important to have some sort of release away from the game to help manage yourself through a long year and to avoid football burnout. For me it is part-time study at Monash University (Bachelor of Commerce). Whilst this is certainly not the most exciting thing and at times can be difficult to find motivation for, sitting in classroom for 4-5 hours a week and thinking about something completely different than football has its benefits both in the short-term, and hopefully the long-term as well. It certainly makes you look forward to going to training a lot more!

And Jason Blake:

I am currently completing the final units of a double degree in Bachelor Civil Engineering and Bachelor Business Administration at RMIT in the city.

Re: players doing uni degrees...

Of those I know at Melbourne, I have friends who had classes with Charlie Gardiner (Commerce/Law) and I had classes with Will Minson (Civil Engineering). Also I know Peverill was there for a time (I think architecture - possibly postgraduate) and also Ray Hall (possibly a postgraduate Economics degree).

Re: players doing uni degrees...

main board probably would have been a much better idea...

Ayce Cordy from the Bulldogs is doing the Melbourne model and will go into medicine. Scored high 90's in VCE

ted richards at Sydney U.... because fans have actually seen him there

provided this is Sydney, so he usually goes unnoticed

I was just about to come on here and say Ted at UNSW, i have personally seen him walking around with books quite a few times or having coffee with mates.

Re: players doing uni degrees...

From over west, Matt de Boer is studying law at UWA, and Andrew Browne has finished his law degree, also fairly certain Luke McPharlin was studying something at university

Barmy, the AFL Players Association facilitates tertiary training for players, and should be able to advise you. This from their website;
