Re: Geelong defeats North Melbourne by 66 points

I thought we were horrible under pressure.
If we play like that next week we lose by 8 goals

Selwood will die for the footy. Brownlow
Menzel is doing party tricks too early.
Taylor is on fire,
Mooney is adaptable
Varcoe needs to stop gliding. But gee he is class with the ball.
Lonners is steel down back
Duncan is now a give to and run type guy.

I thought we did exactly what we had to do today, and nothing more. After halfway through the second term, the match resembled a training drill. Apparently SJ could've played too, but they wanted to make sure he was cherry ripe for the Pies next week, ditto Ottens.

Re: Geelong defeats North Melbourne by 66 points

A good win in the end. Great start, then let NM into the game almost until half time. NM were playing a brave brand of football and Petrie was on fire early. Interesting comment by Walls et al..'....good coaching by Scott mixing up the defenders on Petrie and shutting him out of the game, Thompson would have left the defender on him...'
Pods was very influential, just wish he'd regain his straight kicking. The usual suspects were great again (Bartel, Kelly, Chappy, Enright, Milburn, Corey). It will be a quiet week for the Stokes knockers as he was pretty good IMO. Varcoe was magic in places and even Mackie was OK. Josh, Tom Lonergan and Hawk played themselves into the game after poor starts, as did Mooney. But I'm lovin' the youngsters! Menz was great today (and a goal of Jimmy's should be credited to him), Dunc was a bit quite but OK and young Bundy made the most of his half game. Joel was magnificent all day.

Whinge time.
Set shots (better than other times, but still not up to expectations).
Soft frees (to them), and frees not paid (to us) just because we're 10 goals up.
Joel's goal - was touched - but after the ball crossed the line IMO.

It's going to be a massive game next Friday night.

You can put this game down as a victory then. That guy's pessimism has been a good omen for us thus far. May it long continue. :thumbsu:

we won by 66 after the week bye and from the start of the game we looked like a team that has rested for a week. Luckily as the game went on we built momentum and finished the 2nd half with two 6 goal quarters which is good. Collingwood in peak form beat the Roos by 87 points and a couple of players we had missing so a good indicator between the two clubs for next weeks clash. Unfortunately Hawkins did not quite impose himself as most are expecting but he is still working hard although he sometimes can look like he doesn't wanna chase when out of a contest. He's doing enough to stay in our best 22 and again we saw how important he is when Ottens was rest in the 4th quarter. I reckon the bye is gonna be more of a concern to sides than a blessing as the season progresses and it will definitely affect Collingwood on Friday night.

A predictable game? Not pre-aseason but after 5 wins it was.

The only surprise today was Quartermane (my spelling) on the box. Boy, forget Lane and Mike S. he really barracks for anyone but Geelong. A Hawkers man?
He was awful for the first 1 1/2 quarters (when Geelong got on top) and even early in the last.

Pods IS the man up forwqrd. He knows how it works now, even if it means knocking over players to let others prosper. He is a key player. We need another big forward to step up. Mooney and Hawkins battled hard in the ruck when asked, neither had much influence up forward.

Reckon parts of the second half today had little intensity so it's really hard to guage where we are at from a game like that.

Glad we rested Ottens albeit that we really miss him when he's not rucking.

Mooney was ok around the ground, but really can't ruck anymore. Hawkins can if only he could learn timing at the centre bounces.

Kelly was awesome and generally most of the mids were good.

Pods showed a bit of form and plays an incredibly important role, he is our go to key forward and creates a lot of opportunities for others by what he does.

Selection next week will be interesting.

As I said to the guy I was talking to on the train, we'll need no players having a down night if we are to beat the Pies. At times we made mistakes under pressure today and there'll be more pressure next week, so we'll need not to cough it up under pressure, or they'll make us pay.

It's going to be a great game to see where we are at.

Other than 10 minutes of the last quarter we had no commentary for the whole game.

Did anyone else have it.

Man it was awesome and eery. Just the crowd noise and the umps.

I can't believe that happened.

Our boys were a class above the North lads so the win and margin was no surprise.

Some things I liked:

PODS physical attack on the ball was excellent.

Hawkins showed a bit today but still needs to hold onto marks.

Mooney did OK playing in the ruck.

Stokes is a dead eye dick when it comes to Goal Kicking.

Duncan? (I still can't tell him and menzel apart) looks like another Steve Johnson.

Selwood is a gun

Things I didn't like:

Varcoe loping up the wing with his back to play. A couple of times backed off the contest.

not much tackling which they should have been practising for next week

Didn't go much out of 2-3rd gear.

I had a few posts having a crack at me for showing North no respect in the preview thread.

I wonder where the outcry for Chris Scott is. That was brutal taking Ottens off at half time when they were only 4-5 goals down. LOL at Joel Corey and Jimmy Bartel rucking. Completely taking the piss.

As much as it was giving Ottens a rest I think the second half was clearly a Hawkins v. Mooney contest for next week. Mooney came into a bit more around the ground but the Hawk was better presenting on the lead as a forward.

The Pods was good again, also copped a heavy knock again - a weekly occurrence that worries me greatly. Our second best forward at providing a marking contest is Menzel at the moment. Firrito must have spent a good 8 or so years in the AFL, and plenty of that time as a full back, and Menzel a HFF in his second year out muscled the guy in a marking contest in the square. Orgasmic.

Roos were always a regulation win, here's hoping we can compete with the Pies on friday night.

Good post. Taking Ottens off was embarrassing.

Re: Menzel. When he took the mark I thought 'the bugger is strong'
Then I thought about what he could be. He is stronger than SJ and Bartel already.
Can he match Chappy? and develop a tank? God I hope so.
But I'm a bit worried he likes champagne footy.

No Walls and no Darcy..........you lucky bastard :D

it was Bliss,

I wouldn't have minded a bench update every 5 :)

We won...we move on. Honestly, it reminded me a little of the Port game..except we lairised a bit more and lacked intensity. Looked more like a training run in the second half once the game was iced.

A nice warm up for next week. Selection will be interesting!!

North will be ok in a couple of years I reckon.

Can you honestly not tell the difference between Duncan & Menzel??? Because you're obviously not paying attention....
Judging by your comment, I assume you're thinking of Menzel. Has got quite a bit of Stevie J in him! Loved his work today.
I was absolutely spewing they didn't pay his big mark! He had more than enough of it, would have been great for him to go back and slot it!

Duncan was solid again. I really really really love both of these guys!
Quartermain showed his lack of knowledge by stating that because of Geelongs success, Duncan & Menzel have lacked opportunities over the past FEW YEARS..... Considering this is only their 2nd year on the list, that doesn't seem to make sense.

Decent win, but North are horrible. Absolutely thrilled with our season so far, beyond proud, but still think Collingwood will get over us quite comfortably next week.

I meant whichever one looks like SJ....if it is menzel then I stand corrected

yeah subbing off Otto at half time made me laugh.

3AW were crapping on pre-game about Ling being told he could go home if he wants like gazza did last year, but he was in the coaches box the whole game.

Seriously, I get more and more amazed at Duncan and Menzel. They perform strongly week in, week out, and not just against opponents like today too. If it werent for Darling, I would be onboard for one of them to win the Rising Star.

Bundy was super-impressive yet again. To be finding the ball so naturally already is really promising - 8 possessions R2 coming on mid-3rd term, 10 possessions R3 as a mid-3rd quarter sub again, 12 possession R4 (he started) and now 12 disposals after coming on at half time. Obviously disposals aren't everything, but if you average those figures out over a game they're somewhere near 20 touches.

Good sign for the future.
