Saw this on the AFL website. I know everyone (including myself) have been really rating Watson and hoping he will slip to our pick. He has not been mentioned in the top 25 below.

Is this good news because it means some other clubs might not rate him, making it easier for us to pick him up?

Top 25 draft prospects

THE COMPLETION of the draft combine always provides pause for thought about just where the brightest young talents will go in the national draft.

With trade week still to come the draft order is not set in stone (see indicative draft order here), but here we take a look at how the first round might unfold on the big day.

1. David Swallow (East Fremantle): Is a complete midfielder who can do it all. At the age of 17 he finished fourth in the Liston Trophy (the VFL's best-and-fairest award) and won the Suns’ B&F.

2. Harley Bennell (Peel): Is a silky midfielder with a burst of speed who reads the ball off packs and finishes his work like a master craftsman. He moves like Daniel Wells.

3. Sam Day (Sturt): Is a key forward who takes hangers and kicks 60 metres without effort. His potential is enormous considering he’s never dedicated himself to footy.

4. Andrew Gaff (Oakleigh Chargers): Is a faultless midfielder, efficient and articulate, who increased his standing at the draft combine by ranking in the top few in endurance events. He is similar to Luke Power in a lot of ways.

5. Dyson Heppell (Gippsland Power): Is a midfielder and flanker who tested well in the endurance and clean hands categories at the draft combine. He is never rushed and yet never gets caught.

6. Jared Polec (Woodville-West Torrens): Is a smooth wingman who can break away from a pack and boot 60 metres on his left foot. He performed well at senior level in finals and plays like a better Clinton Young.

7. Josh Caddy (Northern Knights): Has jumped up the order after some sizzling performances at the draft combine on top of some great games for Vic Metro. He surprised many with his nippy sprint times.

8. Daniel Gorringe (Norwood): Is an intelligent ruckman who’s still growing and is the type of player you can build a team around.

9. Tom Lynch (Dandenong Stingrays): Is a key forward who takes strong marks, is Nick Riewoldt-like in his endurance and has really leapt up the rankings since mid-season.

10. Shaun Atley (Murray Bushrangers): Is a speedy midfielder who would help solve the Brisbane Lions’ pace problems. He has a great attitude and a Michael Voss-like determination.

11. Billie Smedts (Geelong Falcons): Tested well across all disciplines at the draft combine, runs straight and can play in any position.

12. Kieran Harper (Eastern Ranges): Is a richly-talented forward who runs to the beat of his own drum. His brilliance would complement the Demons’ hard-working young midfielders.

13. Brodie Smith (Woodville-West Torrens): Is a hard-running midfielder and flanker who breaks lines and would help provide leadership to a young group.

14. Ben Jacobs (Sandringham Dragon): Is a half-forward and half-back who performed well in the kicking test at the draft combine. He is thought to have improvement in him.

15. Pat McCarthy (Glenelg): Is a tall defender who plays more of a running role than a key-position role and would be another handy leader for a young group.

16. Scott Lycett (Port Adelaide Magpies): Is a hard-working ruckman who contests at stoppages and runs into space to provide a link. He is a known quantity at Alberton.

17. Jed Lamb (Gippsland Power): Is a small forward who would provide badly needed cheek and class to the Roos’ line-up. He put in an almost perfect performance in the kicking test at the draft combine.

18. Jack Darling (West Perth): Is a rambunctious forward who makes his presence felt and would alleviate the Blues’ pain at losing Aaron Hamill a decade ago.

19. Seb Tape (Sturt): Is a dedicated defender you could build a team around. He would complement Ben Stratton in a developing Hawks backline.

20. Cameron Guthrie (Calder Cannons): Is a strong-minded midfielder who would push Ryan Crowley out of the Dockers’ line-up. He kicked a few goals in the TAC Cup finals.

21. Luke Parker (Dandenong Stingrays): Is a midfielder whose standing dipped mid-year but returned again during the TAC Cup finals. He is a top leader and good inside and outside.

22. Tom Liberatore (Calder Cannons): Is an inside midfielder who is leaner and faster than his father Tony, but just as hungry. He is a solid father-son pick.

23. Mitch Hallahan (Dandenong Stingrays):
Is a midfielder whose boxing credentials lend an edge. He is an impressive leader and has a great work ethic. He played injured late in the TAC Cup season.

24. Pat Karnezis (Oakleigh Chargers): Is a talented half-forward with x-factor who leads forward and back. He has only just given up soccer for footy.

25. Jamie Cripps (East Fremantle): Is a sure ball-handler with endurance who has kicked goals in senior footy this season. He is from the same area as Tarkyn Lockyer.

The reason Watson has slipped out of the top 25 here is because he didnt test well compared to the elite at the camp due to his size, hopefully that means if we are able to acquire pick 14 (for jacobs) and we have pick 18 that we can use 14 for someone else and 18 for Watson.

Yer sounds pretty good. 14 on a midfielder ('best available', i suspect)
Then we can use 18 on Watson. But it might be a risk because a KPD is more vital to the structure compared to another midfielder. Particulary one that is just about ready to go.

Started reading about Darling the other day, would possible attitude issues worry us?

Yes, footy comes naturally to him much like that to Luke Stanton and the transition to the AFL is made that much harder as worth ethic is truly tested.

Stay Away. :)

Surprised why people get so hung up on a player before draft week. I assume that most of you (like myself), would have seen very little of said player beyond the U18 Championships and some highlight packages, so why the fascination.

If a guy, who I'm sure has more a clue than the majority of posters on here (bar those who genuinely follow junior football) doesn't have him in the top 25, then what makes you think he's worth pick 14 or 18?

That said (and more than a touch hypocritically :o), I'd be rapt with Darling. :p

until trade week if done there's no point looking at who is ranked at 14 or 18 etc.... We're all assuming that we will have those picks when in fact anything can happen during trade week. I for one will start looking at the draft rankings after trade week.

This thread will be bumped on Oct 12th at about 2.05PM

I thought that the fact of him being an AA CHB would make him in the top 25
Clearly some disagree. There's a lot of kids who did very well at junior level but failed to go on with it afterwards. Certainly looks impressive but how does his supposedly poor athleticism bode for him at AFL level, where he won't be able to use his size to the same effect he does now?

He is an old fashion 'man child' who will make it onto a list but lacks a motor and mobility to hold down CHB in the AFL...

The kid that played at CHF in the same Calder Cannons GF side, Williams I think is his name, was easily the pick of the talls... Will be a Above average...

Watto should make it, BUT!

Thing with Watson is, he is not quick, and hasn't got a giant leap, but he does have a fantastic game sense and great spoiling. Makes him a great backman. He has a very long left boot, so there is some rebounding as well. But he isn't the athletic sort and once these types come to full power they would jump all over him

hard to say where he'll go with injuries and little exposure this year.....clubs might reach a tad for talls this draft, he might be thereabouts. Probably a similar situation to Dawes although he did a knee IIRC? Mitchell is a bit unit, good straight line speed but just average agility, IIRC was measured at 198cm at DC??

Have to look at Watson like a Brian Lake. Took him a while to find his own, but he is now a premier defender in the comp.

Watson has an amazing left foot, reads the game well and has decent hands. Pace could be an issue, but that can be worked on.

Unsure on Darling... One of the top prospects at the beginning of the year, seems to have slipped mighty far... Attitude is an issue I am unsure about.

Would also love to snag Mitch Hallahan.

I went to school with #20 Cameron Guthrie (and his dad was my 5th & 6th grade P.E teacher), not only is he a super talentented footballer but he is a very smart footballer,

I would love to have him at Carlton although I think we don't need alot more midfielders,

His family are all mad Carlton supporters but he has the perfect mindset going into the AFL combine, he does not support an AFL club , at the moment Adelaide look to be the most interested in him, But if Ratts and or any of the Carlton scouts are reading this, PICK HIM UP ASAP!!:D
