A conservative approach that allows us to keep bringing in youth while keeping some experience around and building upon structures.

This assumes that the 6 month guys were brought in this year mainly to be coverage and won't set the world on fire.

Retire/Delist: Goldstein, Shiel, Laverde, El-Hawli, Lual, Davey Jr, Menzie, Smart, McMahon and Blakison

Re-sign: Reid, Prior, Draper, Hobbs, Setterfield, Bryan and Visintini

Free agent signing: Jeremy Howe from Collingwood - 5 year playing/assistant coach contract. 1st year playing. 2nd year Howes choice as player/coach. 3-5 year Club choice on player/coach role.

Draft Hand: #7, 9, 26 and 27 - Grab Ollie Greaves and Fred Rodriguez to add a mixture of grunt and class to our mid/forward mixture. Use the two second rounders to match the bids on El-Achkar and Sweid and get some extra capital the next year.
I hope El-Hawli makes it. I also wouldn't be surprised if Smartt gets another year.

I want to see El-Hawli back in as soon as he’s available. He has pace which we lack and plays with a bit of flair. A few things he needs to work on but
I think he’s very promising. Having said that, I think we’ve unearthed a very exciting group of youngsters and realistically we can’t play them all every week. Patience is needed with all these younger players, but we are Essendon. Most of has have run out of patience.

I really like El-Hawli, but I think the two-way running of Duurs, Clarke, Roberts, etc. might have him a couple back now.

Theyve beaten

Dogs, Crows, Hawks

Gws, Melb and Ess is an easy draw over next 4

I dont necessarily think there a top 4 side, but theyre definitly in that next 5
What part of not saying they will was not clear ?

I think they will make it but they still have to do it. Also think Rowell will stay but he may just be waiting to see if they can actually jump the hurdle.

Smartt is an 18 month contract i believe unless something changed

Beat me to it, his was 18 months.
Nope

Of the 18 players picked in the draft this week, only five – West Coast's No.1 pick Tom McCarthy, Port Adelaide pair Harrison Ramm and Ewan Mackinlay, Essendon's Archer May and Western Bulldogs choice Zac Walker – nominated on 18-month terms.

That sees that group signed until the end of 2026.

The remaining 13 players all lodged short-term nominations as per the final nominations list earlier this week.

It means Essendon's other three picks – Liam McMahon, Lachie Blakiston and Oskar Smartt – will be signed until the end of this season, while Werribee pair Zac Banch (Nort Melbourne) and Flynn Young (Carlton) will also have six-month deals at their new clubs.

Gold Coast's picks Caleb Lewis and former Saint Oscar Adams will be on short-term deals, as will Collingwood's two recruits Roan Steele and Noah Howes. Jacob Newton (West Coast), Michael Sellwood (Western Bulldogs), Cooper Trembath (North Melbourne) and Mani Liddy (Port Adelaide) will also be signed until the end of 2025.

Former Sun Jacob Heron was being eyed by the Western Bulldogs as one of their selections and had nominated on a six-month term, but only hours before the draft he withdrew his nomination and chose against pursuing a return to the AFL. – Callum Twomey

I will bang on about this until he signs…we need to go hard for this guy. Him and Duursma on the wings would be beautiful!!

Ollie Dempsey is still expected to sign a four-year deal at the club, but intriguingly, he is yet to do so, despite it being on the table for several months now as he continues to play career-best football”

Would have to be a 9-10 year offer to get him, that’s the issue. Players who know they’ll have a free agency bidding war in 4 years, then want it included in the deal. Otherwise there’s no point of leaving and they lose out.

Well there you go - I was sure I read something about us telling him (Smartt) to nominate an 18 month contract to deter other clubs from picking him up before our pick.

Who is this Wardius bloke? I'm sure plenty are looking at him. Crazy stats in the VFL
I do not know a lot about him but this is from the GWS page.

Joining the GIANTS as a Category B Rookie at the end of 2023, Wardius is a medium forward from the Hume League where the crafty and creative youngster kicked 149 goals in 49 games. A previous member of the GIANTS Academy, Wardius is a country boy who prior to joining the GIANTS spent two years working on his family farm in NSW. Despite his slight frame, Wardius played senior local football for three years in the Hume League prior to joining the GIANTS and performed well, including the 2023 finals series where he kicked 15 goals from three finals. Wardius put forward several impressive performances for the GIANTS’ VFL side across the 2024 season as he looks to break through for an AFL debut.

He is 181cm so medium forward may be a stretch.
