Looking at the list at the moment I could see a number of players on the main list leaving at the end of the year.

Heppell, Goldy, Stringer, Shiel, Kelly and Baldwin all ones who could be moved on in various ways (retirements, delistings, trades)

Could also see Jayden Davey being shifted back to the rookie list to keep him and open up a main list spot.

Isn't it just going to be top 8 sides overpaying for players for a push into the end of year?

Sides who lack a ruck or a KPD when another side has a surplus. Maybe someone jumps at Stringer.

Trading is already a s**t show. I can't see how the clubs will do a lot of serious business midseason.
i think if anything, its the sides from 7-12~ who are off the pace and need to bridge gaps.
if im top 6 mid season, im probably not tinkering too much.

Jayden certainly get the time.
I think Baldwin too, assuming he gets on the park this year for extended periods

A couple of watchpoints will be;
Cox - Does he find a role, live up to Brad's demands
Tex/Guelf - with Davey's, Menzie and Gresham plus our mids pushing fwd, could cut one or two fringe smalls
Jones, Hunter and Weid could come down to a decision on whether we need/want one, two or any of them with Langford, Wright and Caddy.

list is far from the finished product and need to get ruthless with it.

Seems like mid season trade period is fait accompli at this point. I can see teams in contention trying to get players like Shiel or Stringer mid season, would we be after anyone?
Would depend on where we are at really. If we are in the same spot as we where last year at half way and both where playing well I doubt we are entertaining anything.

It will be teams like St Kilda or Freo from the year before who have out performed to get themselves into top 6 range and then push for a game changer they need in the finals.

midseason trade period

Good idea: allows contending teams to top up their list and fill any holes to make a run at finals should a key player get injured

Good idea: more interest in the game/clicks/trade week is fun

Bad idea: teams at the bottom of the ladder will trade away players to get worse . More tanking and more unwatchable games during the back half of the season.

I think a mid-season trade period might kill demand for mid-season draft. AFL will need to prioritise.

Would it though?

Depends on what you can trade in the midseason trading.

If we opffload Stringer for a future pick then surely we would be able to use the midseason draft to bring our list numbers back up?

Mid season trade period doesn’t exactly excite me, it was going to happen at some stage. We are shifting more towards American sports styles with FA and how the draft is run. So it’s not surprise - if picks can be traded it will be pretty interesting players not so much as I think that will be a fiz for years.

Doubt there'd be too much of this, you need to have a club willing to take the outgoing player mid-season and pay the requisite price.

Are North going to trade out Nick Larkey or LDU mid-season if they're going poorly? Doubtful. It'll be guys that are somewhat expendable and ready to go. Stringer or Shiel from our list would fit that bill, for the right club they could be a difference maker come finals.

Hogwash. If clubs thought they would be the difference they would have suitors chasing them during trade period.

I could take Stringer, at a pinch, if a side suffered an LTI they needed replacing. If desperate a team might pick him up short term.

But Shiel? Has isn't even able to play his best position at Essendon. Laughable to think things would be different at an even better club.

Let's not.

I think it could work in some instances.

Massimo seemed to want out of Essendon for opportunity - we could have, in theory, offered him to the highest bidder.

Have high hopes for baldwin this year. I think we’ll know by r6-8 where he stands in scotts plans

I think the main driver for either a mid season draft or trade period, is to solve a gap on the senior list due to injury.

Naturally you'd prioritise afl listed players over kids.

Yes you could create a spot through trading out a player for a future pick, but the quality of the player you bring in through a mid season draft would be weak. Better off chasing another afl player instead for depth.

I think the only concern is the form of tanking

I think we need to bring a lottery idea for the draft in some form if we bring in MST

It will happen its just a matter of when - which seems 2024 is the year

The other thing could be teams that get hot starts due to some easy draws, may believe their further advanced then they are

I cant see top sides giving anything away to bottom sides too much - However i assume your still only allowed the same amount of players on a list at any given time. So if you want a stringer maybe have to give up pick 23 and a spud player that isnt getting a game

But the other player has to agree to come to you.

I think sometimes you will get a player for player trade but most of the time it will be for draft capital.

I was spewing when Melbourne traded all those picks to Gold Coast for pick 3 and chose Clayton Oliver ahead of us. Now it's not looking so bad.

(Hope you make it back Clayton :purpleheart:)
