It's interesting to look at the noise around our apparent trade moves or interests ahead of the trade period. There's been articles saying we've shown interest in

- GWS on-baller Jess Dal Pos
- Darcy Vescio
- Chloe Molloy
- Chloe Scheer from Adelaide

So we've shown interest in players not just Melbourne based, but those from interstate also - wonder if that's bit of an indication that our draft strategy may also be a bit different in that we won't necessarily be focused on just local Falcons or regional players, and that we may also be looking who is the best available talent, even if they are more Metro based

Geelong Cats AFLW: Cats hoping to secure new coach by end of June

THE search to find a replacement for outgoing Cats AFLW coach Paul Hood is set to intensify in the coming weeks, with the club aiming to secure a new mentor by the end of next month.

THE search to find a replacement for outgoing Cats AFLW coach Paul Hood is set to intensify in the coming weeks, with the club aiming to secure a new mentor by the end of next month.
Geelong has placed an advertisement for its vacant coaching position online and applications close on Sunday.

Head of AFLW at the Cats, Brett Johnson, said internal and external candidates had been encouraged to apply, with Geelong hopeful of locking away its preferred candidate by the end of June.

“Hoody did a terrific job and he was there from the start and really brought the women’s program to life so he will be missed,” Johnson said.

“But we have started the process (to find a new coach) and we hope to have a preferred candidate by mid-to-late June.

“Applications close on Sunday and we will start short-listing and interviewing after that.

“It will be a really rigorous process, and throughout that we will be able to determine who the best candidate is and the preferred candidate.”

Johnson will be joined on the selection panel by members of Geelong’s executive team, including football manager Simon Lloyd and people and culture manager Tracy Gilligan, while chief executive Brian Cook and a player representative will also feature.

Johnson said the Cats had settled on the type of coach they were after to take them to the next level after a disappointing 2021 season.

“Obviously coaching experience is important,” he said.

“They need to be able to clarify the team’s purpose and the values within the club’s values framework, and set expectations and standards from there.

“We are also looking for someone who has the technical and tactical capabilities, so developing a game plan and making sure that matches the capabilities of the team and also the demands of the game.

“And the other part is obviously just building relationships and rapport with all the stakeholders.”

Is a players representative normal in regards to a selection panel for a new coach?

Says it all where they talk about the new coach needing to develop a game plan that matches the capabilities of the team and the demands of the game.

Hood did not even go close to doing that this season.

He kinda did towards the end of the season when he realised that his precision game plan wasn't going to work - but pretty sure most peeps on the outside saw that much earlier

Bit of talk about possible trade targets here...

North Melbourne could also have a relatively busy trade period, showing interest in Western Bulldog Kim Rennie. The Roos could however lose Daria Bannister to Geelong and Jasmine Grierson to the Giants.

Giant Elle Bennetts is likely to join the Dogs.

The Cats will be reasonably big players, making a move for Adelaide’s Chloe Scheer but widely expected to lose emerging star Olivia Purcell to Melbourne.

Don't like the 2nd part of that last line though. :(

ADELAIDE premiership star Chloe Scheer has officially requested a trade to Geelong :thumbsu:

Here's a new fav for you dazbroncos Won't miss Liv at all ;)

I still have one life to Liv... lol....

So thats good - but Liv will always be my first and thus hold a special place ...

And Sheer seems like a really good add too... will be good for us

So Scheer has official requested a trade, but seems she may not be the only addition - so a completely different strategy to past seasons (from same article as Shai posted)

The deal to get Olivia Purcell from Geelong to Melbourne looks set to involve another player going back the other way.
The Dees currently have pick Nos. 15, 32 and 47, with the All-Australian Purcell originally drafted with No.14 in 2018.

She's not the only Roo potentially on the move, with forward Sophie Abbatangeloalso looking outside of Arden Street.
Daria Bannister (Geelong) and Jas Grierson (GWS) have been linked to other clubs, although North has maintained the pair will stay.

And just regarding Purcell - I wonder if this potential move has been on the cards for a while. When the leadership group came out at the start of the season and it included Morrison who's barely played but not Purcell, it kinda raised my eyebrows as I thought Purcell was one we'd be seeing move into that group

Finally something to get excited about with the direction our AFLW team is heading in.

Would like Purcell to stay but I honestly think we need a Scheer in our team more so than Purcell. We have plently of young players in the mould of Olivia (Gardiner, Moloney, McDonald, Morrison) but how many players do we have like Scheer? Big bodied players who can impact both in the midfield and in the forward line. Rocky and that's it.

So in effect we have picks 2, 7 & 9 that we can't really trade without being penalised. Which is good.

2 mature players from the Barwon region, who you would assume will come from our pretty strong VFLW team. Again this looks good.

Lose Purcell in a player swap. We need experienced leaders so I don't mind the trade in theory. It all comes down to who we get in return.

Scheer in. Will be interesting to see how we get the trade done, considering we can't trade our first 3 picks. Maybe our picks 20 & 37 could suffice as the article states draft position isn't important to the crows due to the ludicrous advantage they get being in a one team state and players can nominate where they want to play.

Looks like we're sniffing around a couple of others players and I'm rapted to hear neither of those are Harris or Fredericks.

We'll have to offload or delist some players to fit in some of these changes so it will be interesting to see who's in the gun (Goring, Garing, Darby, Keryk, McWilliams ?)

Will be watching the trade period closely this year. We can't stuff it up this time around.

I've got a feeling the two mature players we'd go for are Tamara Smith and Claudia Gunjaca.

Smith is currently averaging 17.5 possessions and 10.5 tackles a game in the VFLW, and Claudia Gunjaca is the player who went to Sydney during Covid last year and won the league B&F in a league which included several GWS AFLW listed players.

I love Liv Barber as well. You'll enjoy watching Chloe in the hoops.

My thoughts in regards to other list changes:

I get the feeling that Rocky could be on the way out - an earlier report suggested that the club had been testing the waters/gauging opposition teams interest in her

With Boyd already gone I think they'd try to keep Darby, especially as she can also play ruck which may be useful with O'Connor retired. Plus, if she plays alongside Barber we can then keep Barber up forward

Keryk stays - elevated to the leadership group this past season which would suggest she's rated within the club, so unless it's her decision to move on I'm not sure the club will just move her on, at this stage

Time for Goring to focus on her music career

Garing & McWilliams are the harder ones and I'd wait & see on what happens with others and trade in etc - I wouldn't rush to re-sign either of them but I wouldn't delist too quickly either, as either/both may have some value as depth coverage depending on other changes. Garing started last season slowly but once thrown into the middle following Purcell's injury she became a more valuable contributor. And if we can improve our ball movement and actually play a quicker style, it would likely benefit McWilliams.
We have a good amount of youth coming through, and I'm both cases I'm not sure if either would necessarily be best 22 across a full season, but we could worse for depth then having say one of they take the 29/30th spot on the list

Would agree with your proposed list changes C09 although I'd be a bit more willing to move McWilliams on if we're getting Chloe Scheer (who I really like as a player btw) - Barber, Scheer and Darby up forward is a good combination, w/Darby providing ruck support to Rene Caris.

I'd be inclined to retain Garing.

I'm more inclined to keep Cranston if we can't move her on. I thought she was grossly misused this year and left to rot in our forward line that was starved of the ball and decent delivery.

Goring has to go.

The others I don't really care either way.

It will be interesting to see who we go with as head coach next year. You would think their plans/ideas going forward over the next few years would be crucial in some of those list management decisions. Especially in what is looming as a key trade/draft year in the history of our AFLW team.

I'm upset

She was the future of the team. :(
We have more than a few who feel the same with the news that Purcell will be officially requesting a trade

I think the afl model with picks doesnt seem to work. I saw vid on the afl and they saying how the crows may just have to wear this one but they have won plenty of past deals. Geelongs picks mean little to the crows.... meanwhile the dees probably to properly compensate geelong. Maybe cash like the old days would be a better way to deal with these transfers.

What in your opinion is the main need for the W team? Is it talent or is it a better system?

There's been some speculation that a trade for Purcell to Melbourne could also involve a player coming back the other way, so not just pick/s from Melbourne to Geelong but more likely a swap of player/s & pick/s
