You have to laugh at the left and their clear wish for Abbott to have stuffed up abroad. They really are a low bunch, who have no desire to see what's best for the country, even for something as bi-partisan as Australian foreign policy. Sadly, for them, he didn't stuff up, he handled himself with integrity, class, and made a couple of terrific speeches. His speech in Texas was a cracker.
Basically, whenever a newly elected conservative goes overseas, there are calls from the left that Australia will be "embarrassed." They said it with John Howard, they said it with Tony Abbott and it never happens.
Gillard on the other hand.... remember her cringe worthy Aussie rules handpass in the oval office? Rudd's "waving" to George Bush on the other side of the room in a facepalm moment, not to mention his rudeness to the Chinese.
Whether you like Abbott's politics or not, he is a few things going for him in foreign relations. One he is extremely likeable face to face. He has NO enemies in the Liberal party (just because Turnbull, Morrison and Hockey have leadership ambitions one day doesn't make them enemies.) His lack of enemies is the one reason he became the leader.
And he is incredibly humble (unlike Rudd) and this comes across well in foreign relations. Kim Beazley said quite openly that the Americans were intrigued by our free-trade negotiations in Asia. He is also a very respectful person. He reminds me very much of John Howard in those aspects.
So, despite the lefts wish that Abbott would be an embarrassment, he handled himself incredibly well, and did Australia proud. Hopefully his stance on climate change with the Canadian PM, will inspire other countries, who are "doing something" about climate change to instead do nothing, and stop wasting money on worthless gestures, that have no empirical evidence to support them.
I give his trip a 9/10
