We have been quite the meltastic board during the off season over the last few years. To my memory.

2013: trading 28 for Yeo rather then 31
2014: drafting safe bet Duggan
2015: Parto who?
2017: the double key forwards brander and Allen rather then a mid, plus the melting over getting Ryan early. Ainsworth over worpel.
2018: XON over Valente

That's a good summary. How ****ing stupid do the Yeo melts look now?! My word..

Don't forget Venables over SPP.

Under-25s in 2020

Backs: Barrass, Duggan, Cole, Nelson, Rotham, Watson, Edwards‬

‪Mids: Kelly, Sheed, Venables, Ainsworth, O’Neill, Foley‬

‪Forwards: Allen, Ryan, Petruccelle, Waterman, Brander, Cameron, Williams‬

Yeo 26 throughout the entirety of the 2020 season. We’re hardly dad’s army, the frame of our next core group appears set at either end of the field. Young mids need work (as always).

The deal is a no brainer.

Who did everyone want over Duggan? Laverde?

Keys in your opinion, is this the biggest acquisition the Eagles have ever made?

Obviously career wise it will be difficult to unseat Kennedy but, at the time, he was a very high upside kid who had yet to cement himself.

In terms of the ready made package, what compares to this for you? Glendinning maybe?

Glendinning had a very very good CV but he was at the back end of his career (only played two seasons) and he wasn’t a trade as such being an uncontracted player we could access as part of our startup

We’ve never done a trade like this. Ever.

It’s a risk when you trade away so much of your future but he’s a known quantity who in each of the past three seasons has improved significantly.

There’s a degree of caution hailing this trade as a success because we don’t know the detail of the full deal but getting this done without losing players and without having to haggle with other clubs to upgrade the picks we had is a genuine positive.

Tim Kelly will be a very happy camper and I suspect he’ll be very keen to repay the faith we’ve shown in him. He’s proven himself to be an outstanding individual and fits in perfectly with the culture we’ve built

landing TK will come at the cost of high draft picks and with hurn and schoefield and Kennedy nearing the end, it may be challenging regenerating the list.

Shaun Burgoyne turns 38 next year which means some players can keep going, but it's rare these days

We really have already drafted to replace those 3 (Jetta as well).

Not saying the drafees will be 'as good' but the foresight has been there to at least try.

We have 2 spare premiership winning HBF's who were out of the team late last year (Duggan & Cole) Oallen who is a jet and Brander who has ability but is still an unknown (but from reports can play at either end).

Not even counting the myriad of other young players (especially talls, but going to include Foley and Xon) who could pop up and play a role going forward.

The one thing we have done recently is bring in a lot of youth. They won't all make it of course, but we've started the regeneration whilst contending (and winning one... so far).

Would Sam Mitchell count?

He did win a Brownlow with us after all.

Impact was significant I think we’d all say, but even still we got one year playing and one year coaching. There was no illusion we were getting prime Sam Mitchell.

I’d say this is the biggest acquisition we’ve made quite comfortably.

Sounds like a few boys are only looking at the Traded IN: column and forgetting about the Traded OUT: column.

History will judge this trade, not a 5th place finish in the Brownlow.
Meh, we'll never know who we would have taken with the picks we give away, so it's little more than baseless speculation.

Though baseless speculation is the whole basis for this website I suppose. :)

His coaching/playing over the 2 years lead us to the flag I have no doubt.

I’m not ready to put it on him entirely, but undeniably it helped.

Might not be the “biggest” deal we made but would be up there for the most impactful.

6 premiership medals in that group already - that is pretty significant.

And we've been the 2nd most successful club in the AFL era.
I'm not convinced that this new "sell the farm" strategy is a good one.

What is your concern with giving up the picks?

Barring hitting on all of them, which is something everyone on here seems to think will be impossible when we own them but suddenly a near certainty when we trade them away, Kelly is a better option than any of them.

Framework of the future backs are set: Barrass, Duggan, Nelson, Cole, Watson, Edwards

Future forwards: Allen, Ryan, Waterman, Brander, Petch, Cameron.

Future mids need work, badly, but we drafted two last year. If neither develop to an AFL calibre player, how can we know that the club would have done any better with 24 and 33?

If we get 36 back with Kelly then it's effectively 14, 24 and next year's first. Don't have a problem with that. But i don't like these rumours that Geelong want to give us a future fourth.

The question is do you have another tilt at the flag in the next 2 season while we still have Shuey, NN, JK et al or just business as usually with little to no changes (even though we have a hole in the midfield) and just start a rebuild with some new kids in a few years? I think the club is going down the path of the likes of the Hawks where they had some success and traded in some known talent (to fill known holes) at the expense of the immediate future for more success. I reckon the club is hoping for at least 1 more flag in the next 2 seasons before a rebuild. I reckon its a pretty good bet. If it doesnt pay off then we will start again in 2022 when all the all old boys retire.

Our history has certainly been one of building through the draft and trading for role players to fill gaps in the list. It’s been a successful strategy and had it not been for a unique situation in Kelly one that I doubt we’d have departed from

I’ll be disappointed if we trade out 33 without getting at least something commensurate back but at 14,24 and our 2020 first I’m happy enough as a one off departure from keeping the farm
