so.. your saying we missed out on the next sam mitchell

And Dane Swan and Lachie Neale and Adam Goodes etc etc etc.

I find those kind of posts like DS just posted to be BS.

Bet you were one of those that savaged the Gold Coast pick swap in 2017.

If the difference between the 33rd and 52nd best kid this year, and the difference between a future 2nd and future 3rd means you don't want Tim Kelly then that would be extremely poor list management.

It's not some depth player we're talking about - it's immediate first 22, immediate impact, immediate covering of what everyone on the West Coast board identified as our greatest weakness. And we don't lose any players for him.
The flipside is that injuries to 1 or 2 mids... who's waiting in the wings... no one?

If someone can convince me that the kids we would have got would have had a greater influence than TK then I might be mad otherwise im happy.
And even if they were would our window still be open by the time they're ready to play, we don't exactly have a history of pushing kids into the side quickly.

It would be the same without Tim Kelly.

Now: Ah Chee, Allen (assuming he's not delisted), Venables etc etc
Hypothetical: 18 year old Vic kid with pick 14, 18 year old Vic kid with pick 24, top WAFL player with pick 33, Ah Chee, Allen, Venables etc - but no Kelly

Which would you prefer in 2020?

No team has good depth to cover multiple injuries to star players to a sufficient level. The list cloggers are at all 18 clubs who you pray does a decent enough job when injury and suspension hits hard.

Mark McGough (43), Jarrad Wright (35), Andrew Browne (53), Nick Stone (44 rookie draft), Josh Houlihan (49), Kieran McGuiness (42)

This is the 2001 super draft, by the way.

See, I can be selective with late draft picks to push an agenda. Draft is always a lottery, even moreso with later picks.

How am i being selective?

I am literally giving you the exact picks in OUR premiership winning team from last year. It's black and white, i don't have to go looking for anything 🤦‍♂️

I'm not running around selecting guns taken by any team with later picks, this is purely what we have. I think you've completely missed the point.

My point is that these picks CAN be important. So don't go giving them away for nothing because you've landed your big fish already.

You don't throw them away to keep Geelong satisfied or play "easy to trade with"

It's the points equivalent of pick 2.

It really isn't, this whole "4 average picks is enough points to be a top 5 pick" is dumb.

You can't magically recruit the #1 player with picks 14, 22 and 33, you'll likely get a good player and maybe some role players.

And even if they were would our window still be open by the time they're ready to play, we don't exactly have a history of pushing kids into the side quickly.
Unless one of the kids was Chris Judd they would have maybe missed the window.

I can't 😟

Yall gonna be looking back on this and kissing my peen in 6 years time.
You do have form I suppose.

Cockatoo and Laverde are such superstars these days :moustache:

They CAN potentially be important but flags aren't won with potential. Yes, all of those picks we gave up could be the next McGovern but that's not helping us in 2020 isn't it?

He's off the table. Gold Coast can pick him up for nothing under the revised Darwin academy allocation they now have.

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-09-30/future-bright-as-suns-get-access-to-pendlebury-clone
The Suns are set to immediately benefit from the revised Academy rules, with Queenslanders Connor Budarick and Hewago 'Ace' Oea and Darwin's Malcolm Rosas and Ben Jungfer all considered draftable.

I assume they can prelist and trade the guys they have access to as zone selections, as they did in their startup days when they traded Dayne Zorko to Brisbane.

We could still get Rosas for one of those late picks, or even Geelong's future third, if we were interested.

Of course the trade won't pass muster if we don't win a flag with Tim Kelly in the side.

That doesn't mean you don't do it. If the trade didn't happen because we didn't want to let go of pick 33 I would be apoplectic.

If you look at it on the basis of previous trades being done for similar level players (BTW i would take neale or shiel any ****ing day of the week over kelly) Then a reasonable trade is 2 first round picks for kelly and a late second.

Purely from a trade perspective on exposed form and history we are winning the trade if we pay less than that, we are losing if we pay more than that. We just paid 2 firsts and 2 seconds for kelly and a future third round in what is considered to be both one of the shallowest and most compromised drafts in history.

All Trades and Draft Part 2- Now discussing other trades

Well there's a waste of font if I've ever seen it.

I posted earlier that 14, 24 and 33 added up to more than the value of pick 3 (which Melbourne currently have) but strangely no-one seems to think Melbourne would take that deal.

I wonder why. Sections of this board have too much of a hard-on for draft pick numbers.

POTENTIALLY Kelly could help us win the flag.

POTENTIALLY our flag window is shut in 2021 once Kennedy retires and the trade is diminished.

I don't see what your argument is here. Maybe they could have been a bust pick so might as well just throw them in the deal anyway?

I'm stoked to land Kelly, however i'm free to think we've overpaid and it could POTENTIALLY hurt us in the long run.

You on the other hand are happy paying whatever it seems. We'll know in 6 years time i guess.

There is no way I'd take Neale or Shiel over Kelly and I like to think a thread on the polls board about it might surprise you. Goal kicking ball winning midfielders don't grow on trees.

Historically our window opens every 10-12 years, missing out on 1.5 drafts wont do much to our chances when it opens again. Might as well push hard while we have the chance. It may be overs in terms of 33 but will 33 matter in 10 years?

‘(i) At a National Draft Selection Meeting:
(A) each Club shall exercise a minimum of 3 Draft selections (including selections forfeited under Rules 8.7, 10.10(b), 12.4(b), 13.4(b) and 14.4(d)); and’

Answered my own question.

So currently we are in breach of the national draft rules.
All we need to do is delist enough players to have three picks so with no announcements on a few players its not going to be a problem.
