For those saying that picks in the 30s are worthless, last year we drafted big bad bailey and cameron with those selections, both of which I'm very happy with and am glad to have on the list.

Don't get me wrong, I'm stoked to have kelly, but I feel like 2 x firsts and 2 x seconds is a massive toll. Oh well, win a flag with him on our books and all will be forgotten.

Which part is hard to understand? I know it's easy to take easy pot shots and all..

Nobody (obviously me) is saying we are guaranteed to get a gun in that range. But there is still plenty of valuable young players we could've had access to had we not completely wilted and bent over in every way possible for Geelong.

We basically have NO presence in this draft now. Any highly rated sliders between 20-50 are now out of our range.

It couldn't have hurt to hedge our bets each way rather than put all our chips on 6 years of Kelly's service.

I'm happy we got Kelly. I'm not happy we paid that much when we had so many reasons to play hard ball and still make the deal happen.

They wanted 2 first rounders. We gave them that, AND 2 2nd rounders as well. Was that necessary in making the trade happen? Doubtful.

Yeah it’s never ideal to be locked out of a draft.

I don’t see how our young depth is in some dire straights though? Like I’ve said numerous times, the backs and forwards are sorted. Mids badly need work.

We drafted two mids last year. If they come on, sweet. Venables, if he comes on, sweet.

If not, why are we putting any faith in this regime to draft young mids anyway? Who cares that we don’t get to draft the next Ainsworth?

There’s a lot of having it both ways - we suck at drafting, but also oh god no not our draft picks.

I’m just willing to wait and see what happens. Hope we find some more picks from somewhere and throw a few more darts, but if not I’ll be rapt we got a superstar player here and wait to see what happens over the next few years.

I am not sure how much clubs talk to each other but would the Eagles have known Freo had no interest? If they did know then I somewhat agree with what you are saying. If they did not know and thought they are sitting waiting to pounce then that may of forced the Eagles hand to just get it done as they have.

Isn't this years draft supposed to be poor after the early picks?
We basically gave up drafting in a poor draft for a top 5 midfielder.

Its essentially 2 first round picks (2019 + 2020) which we were all happy with at the start.
The recruiters must of not seen anything in the later rounds.

Melters: This club has no idea how to draft. Ainsworth? We’ve seen nothing from O’Neill or Foley. Pathetic drafting.

Also melters: WHY DID WE HAVE TO INCLUDE PICK 33?!?!!!!!!!

We gave up 14, 24, apparently 33 and a pick that will be somewhere in the range of 10-20 next year.

Ryan 26, Venables 13, Brander 13, Allen 21, Petruccelle 38, Cole 36... these aren't junk picks. Three of them played in last year's GF, three of them played almost every game this year.

Fair value is one thing and starting two drafts in a row outside the first round is a high price to pay whether you are a finalist or not, but we entered the draft at 28 last year, will seemingly enter it at 57 this year and will enter in the 30s or 40s next year.

Something odd going on here - how do Eagles gain 37 from Essendon to give to Geelong without a deal being lodged?

My guess is we gave 33 to Essendon for 37 and 52.

Leaving us with 52, 57 and 64 as our picks.

Could package 57 and next year's third to get into the 40's?

Edit: trade has been posted now.

On a positive note, we have a pick inside the 3rd round now.

yeah haha I’m so mad we won’t get to chance to take some 18 year olds who history suggests will more than likely wind up being delisted just so we can get an absolute gun midfielder who could very easily be a Brownlow medalist

So we’ve lost 33 for 52? Wow talk about selling the farm.

I mean he’s an absolute gun but...yeah. Carry on, it’s done now.

Our options seem to have been 33 to Geelong for nothing or 33 to Essendon for 52. I know which I’d rather.
