1902 Edward VII is coronated a year after the death of Queen Victoria Collingwood wins flag

1953 Elizabeth II is Coronated a year after the death of George VI, Collingwood wins flag

2023 Charles III is Coronated a year after the death of Elizabeth II, Collingwood wins flag

EDIT: Collingwood has lost grand finals in years George V (1911) and George VI (1937) were coronated. Charles III could've been George VII before opting for his maiden name.

2022 & 2023 GF similarities

The phrase “sweet sixteen” was applied in the coverage of both victories - Geelong for their consecutive wins and Collingwood for their cup count.

For the first time in seventy years both teams won their first flag outside the odd/even numbering they had become accustomed to. Since 1952 the Cat flags were in 1963, 2007, 2009 and 2011 and Collingwood’s since 1953 were in 1958, 1990 and 2010.

Both victories were against relocated/merged foundation VFL teams.

Edit:

More connections.

Both coaches were Brisbane players.

Norm Smith winner was an import. Also both recent arrivals: Smith in his second season for Geelong and Hill in his first for Collingwood.

With Stengle and Hill both teams had their highest scorer kick four goals and they were also players in their first season at their club.

The two players who wore #46 (Blicavs and Cox) had very unorthodox pathways to the AFL.

Collingwood 2023 AFL Premiership and Penrith 2023 NRL Premiership

  • Both were won by teams in black and white
  • Both winning teams came from behind and were the “home” teams
  • Both losing teams were called Brisbane
  • Both were great games and went down to the wire
  • Both were played in significantly hotter than normal conditions
  • Both finished on top of the ladder in their respective competitions

In 1980 when Kiss played at VFL Park, they sucked and were not relevant.

In 2023 when Kiss played at the MCG, they sucked and were not relevant

Ive always struggled to comprehend how they were ever relevant ?
Just a horrible band.

With thanks to grumbleguts

In the last 64 years, Hawthorn and Collingwood have appeared in 34 grand finals without meeting each other once.

More than 50% of all grand finals since 61 represented by at least 1 of these 2 teams.

1990 Collingwood played 26 games
2010 Collingwood played 26 games
2023 Collingwood played 26 games

Difference between 1990 and 2010 was that 2023 has Gather Round which increased the season to 23 rounds instead of a drawn final and a subsequent replay.
