Whos better?

Long 190 games from 89 - 2001
2 premierships, 1 norm smith medal
averages per game - 18 disposals, 3 marks, 0.8 goals, 2 tackles

McLeod 340 games 95 - 2010
2 premierships, 2 norm smiths
averages per game - 19.8 disposals, 3 marks, 0.8 goals, 2.2 tackles

McLeod has played 150 more games than Long and has a slightly higher disposal average plus 1 more norm smith. Long was cut down by injury in his prime, and along with Winmar a real pioneer for aboriginal footballers and his averages are very comparible to McLeod.
2 great champs - who wouold you choose??

McLeod easily. Long is an incredibly over rated footballer. Deeds off the field have him more positively percieved than pure football ability.

That's just a ridiculous statement to make.

Long's ability at his peak was unquestioned.

McLeod was the better player without a shadow of a doubt, but to question Long's pure football ability is just wrong.

No it isn't. He was a good footballer. Nothing more. He continually gets rated above Gavin Wanganeen in these top indigenous lists. As Essendon bias isn't a factor in this, do you think Long was a better footballer than Wanganeen?

Hate polls that you can not see who voted for who. Where are the 4 supporters who voted for Long? McLeod was an out and out gun and miles in front of Long.

I voted McLeod

but re Long v Wanganeen. Long won us a Premiership. Not only did he win the Norm Smith but we wouldn't even have been there if not for his performance the week before.

So the guy that won the club best and fairest and Brownlow that year had little to with winning the flag?

Anyrate Mcleod and Wanganeen are very much a class above Long, he's more Gilbert McAdam.

That's harsh on a very good player, class above McAdam.

Okay that was a little harsh and said in jest, but seriously I stand by my statement that Long's on field abilities seem to have been greatly enhanced by his exploits off it. Long was a good to very good footballer, but was not in the class of McLeod or Wanganeen.

1993 grand final. Sublime. BOG, norm smith.

He didn't do it enough to be in the top category - missing 4 of what should have been his 5 best years doesn't help - but what he was capable of was fairly good!
On pure talent he goes alright vs anyone IMHO.

Gary O'Donnell was B & F in 93. Just had a look at Essendon FC website. In the list of 25 champions of essendon they have ranked Wanganeen 19 and Long 23. I have no argument left bar my opinion...... and I still remember that 93 finals series.

Not knocking Longy and I remember how well he played during that finals series but Wanganeen was an absolute jet.

no offence to longy

but that grand final he had no oppostion to run around, taking on an old and slow carlton was nothing to boast about.

longs a champion, but against the pies in 1990 was hardly seen or heard, in 1993 kouta was dropped the week out from the selection table.
long ran hoops around madden, sexton and spalding, hardly worth bragging about.
the week before was a cobination of hird, calthorpe, olarenshaw and long all pivotal to the win.

and watson sealing it with less than a minute to go.

but lets face facts this thread should be closer to a peter matera versus mcleod?

had the dons met a fresh and healthy west coast in 1993 long would have been taken to the cleaners

nice try op

;)

why is that?

some polls u can and some u cant

is the op blocking us to see the 4 essendon biased supporters, or is it just the case been that way?

either way i love the way people actually are one eyed.

this threads almost going the way of kernahan and carey lol

:o

McLeod, this is no way denying Long was a fantastic player but McLeod was better that's all.

If Long never had any knee problems who knows what he may have done, but facts are facts and McLeod is the superior player.
