CARLTON'S four-day trip into the "unknown" is another step in the club's push for finals action in 2009.

It began on Tuesday under the orders of a group named Stealth Development and has included a series of demands that yesterday rendered the group of 37 virtually speechless at a scout centre near Anglesea.

The camp included players being given briefings on how and where to find food and shelter for their first evening.

Peter Wickham of Stealth Development said the Carlton group showed "marked improvement" yesterday after a slow start on Tuesday.

"What do they say? We are dealing with the Y Generation who question everything," Wickham said.

"It takes a while for them to get back to the good old-fashioned core values and to listen and learn."

Yesterday afternoon, after being awoken in the middle of the night for physical training, the Blues were force-marched to Point Addis beach, where their orders included an exercise known as milling.

Milling involves two players trading body punches for one minute, while locked in a circle by their teammates.

"It's all about fortitude, leadership and teamwork. One of our exercises involves holding your arms out horizontally for as long as you can," Wickham said.

"It sounds easy, but give it a try. Some of the elite can push up towards 30 minutes, but most of the Carlton guys were around 10 minutes."

Today the Blues will abseil and rock climb at Halls Gap.

Carlton's four recruits from last weekend's national draft, Chris Yarran, Rhys O'Keefe, Caleb Tiller and Mitch Robinson, joined the group yesterday.

Robinson is paler than the rope. :o

No wonder they only held their arms out in front of them for ten minutes as if you could be bothered doing that....these camps are pretty pointless IMO.

The Geelong looking your mates in the eye and telling you what you think of them is much better value. FFS their training day in and day out flogging themselves then they send them on a stupid camp with some ex military guy or whatever...of course they are questioning everything..who the f#@% do these guys think they are waking us up and telling us what to do..thats exactly what i'd be thinking, it would be different if it was the coaches or something.

Then again I'm a Gen Y as well!

A lot of snake-oil salesmen making a lot of dough out of these anachronistic 80's period corporate boot camp thingies.

Aint that the truth...I cant beleive AFL CLubs with all their resources and the amount of experienced people (past players) on the payroll can't put together their own pre season camps....seems quite ridiculous

I actually believe these sorts of camps are pretty valuable but some of them talk a lot of crap. ie I had to laugh at this:

"It sounds easy, but give it a try. Some of the elite can push up towards 30 minutes, but most of the Carlton guys were around 10 minutes."

What ****ing elite? Who else does that?

Who's to say we dont do this already???

I'd say every club does it

I know we do it already and its better value than getting some schmuck in to 'push the players boundaries'....
your probably right in one sence, but i can tell you that having played with a club that did these boot camps and one that didnt, the togetherness was heaps closer with the team that did it...

It really does have a huge effect on the player relationship, and shows a test of strength.

Yeah I'm not disagreeing with that or you I agree that these camps can be great, I just question getting some random in to take them.....

On a side note the best part of a pre season camp is getting on the piss with everyone and it definetly enables players to bond. I doubt we will ever see that back at an AFL club, which is a shame because its how you get to know everyone....

On another side note...AFL has become ridiculous in terms of the majority of players not drinking...the lads of the game are being fazed out and its quite boring indeed.......

It's about developing mental toughness and resilliance. This also gives the coaches an insight into what players have the right attitude (Ressiliant, mental endurance, good work ethic and toughness).

Basically they are making blokes harden the F@#k up and seeing who hardens the F#@k up when things get tough.

It is sad, but they are getting paid extreemly well for keeping off the piss for 10 months and being responsible for another 2. As one media manager said to one of his new draftees, you are ok to have a few drinks, just do it where you are surrounded by responsible people and surroundings... Its those who choose not to so that end up in trouble....
