Just an opinion but knowing that they've watched him for a number of years, they obviously rate him highly.
Dunn/Mihoceck/Goldsack not stars but they give you everything they've got.

Can understand that they'd rate him highly. But I guess the question is, who's spot would he take in the back line? As a key defender, we've got Dunn, Goldy (on last years performances) and Moore ahead of him at this stage. And they maybe looking at Shaz in the kinda role as well.

Not sure if I personally see him in the team Round 1 this year.

I'd take him over Scharenberg.

Mihoceck I believe.

For me, not even close.
Scharenberg got talent without a doubt, I've seen him live against North (God forbid anyone ever watches footy after watching that terrible game) and although he played ok, there was a few times he was just out bodied. I'm just saying a bigger body works, Mihoceck isn't a bad user as well.

Cracking balmy 27 degrees as I enter the Southport Sharks home ground. I wander past approx. 200-300 of my Collingwood brethren in the stands below The Wally Fankhauser Clubhouse. Is there a better Clubhouse name in the country?

I’m positively fizzing at the bunghole in anticipation of seeing the boys run around.

9:15 was the scheduled start time, the boys are already out on the paddock warming up then it’s back to the rooms! Not sure what that was all about, can’t have been to change their stops, not a cloud in the sky.
Normal service resumed shortly after and the boys came out, pretty rowdy and clearly keen to get out there.

Now I have pretty dodgy vision with anything past a 7 iron out, so without numbers on the players backs, when they moved to the far side of the ground I tended to lose whom was who. Plus there was 18 trainers out on the park blocking my view, including Whiskers Hocking. Welcome Budda, impart your wisdom.

Fitness wise, noticeable in Maynard, Treloar, Adams, Pendles, Dunn, Wells, Grundy.

The backline talls seemed to consist of Dunn, Moore, Mayne, Miconek then getting it to the link up runners of the likes of Aish, Crisp, Murray, Langdon, Oxley, Smith, Thomas. Some promising movement going on but our Achilles heel, kicking efficiency again let us down too often. We need to improve here. On Thomas, he’s got some skills, his field kicking was pretty sound. Langdon too was solid, he’s just so lackadaisical, not in a negative way, just the way he rolls .
I didn’t see much of Murray or his speed.
Smith’s kicking was solid and moved well in traffic. While training drills aren’t match day I thought he was one of the better contributors in the drills.
In one of my video grabs and several times during the drills, you can hear the trainers saying that the poor kicks get found out pretty quickly.
‘The Greyhound’ Oxley has the calf muscle and lower leg definition of a runner at The Meadows. Did show some skills.

I might have missed Shaz in the mix but he seemed to be up the ground more.
I was really impressed with Mihocek. I’ve no doubt he’ll play this year. Seemed to have the composure of a 100 game player, just seemed comfortable in his surroundings. Get around him!

Dunn doing the majority of the kick outs, he moved well and hit targets. Looks fit.
Darcy also involved in the kick-outs and can hit a long range target with some low trajectory 50m bullets. Can bang it long too when needed. His athleticism on display.
Mayne playing in the backline for 2018 looks like a distinct possibility. Maybe I confused his role as a defensive forward. Plenty of chat from him too, marshalling the players around him. I reckon he’s going to get his reprieve for the 1st half of the season. Had some great pressure acts and a chase down in one passage that really got the boys excited.
Crispy doing some kick ins.
All in all, I was happy with what may well be a new look back six.

Cox has a deficiency in his pack marking. He can fly / contest but just can’t take a clean grab, it’s the old flat hands issue. Someone needs to spend some time with him on this if he’s going to progress as a ruck / forward.
Grundy rolling out of 2017 into 2018. Big year coming.

Through the midfield Daniel Wells a class act. You can really notice the difference in class between he, Pendles, Sidey, Treloar, WHE.
JDG didn’t look that interested. Maybe just how he rolls. Didn’t do anything wrong but would have liked to see some more intensity and chat. Maynard, less I say the better, I’m trying to keep a lid on it…
Sidey, Varcoe, Wells, WHE clearly know how to finish in front of goal and great X factor contributors. Goldy doing a bit of work up there as well so maybe a switch with Mayne?

The forwards I didn’t really see a great deal of although they did some drills up the other end so I was no chance. Defence seemed the order of the day.
Reid did enough without setting the World on fire, suspect he was just managing that shaky rig.

Callum Brown sharp and Daicos’s foot skills on show. Maybe a bit of petulance shown or the ‘Kyrgios’ effect on the latter. Appeared frustrated a few times and Sidey letting him know if he wasn’t in position. He can really hit a target, there was a moment where he hit a target coming out of the goal-square which really got the boys up and about.
Tyler Brown is composed and some sharp skills.
Pendlebury all class. A shimmy and slid through traffic into space to deliver ball to a contest between The Greyhound and Varcoe. Varcoe out-bodied him pretty nicely in what would have resulted in a goal.

McLarty a big unit. Showed promise and pretty effective spoils and looked pretty capable all round in several of the drills. Looks set for improvement in 2018.

Stephenson is built like an Arrowroot biscuit. Has nice skills but monstered in the contests. Will need time. Flynn Appleby, I want to see more of him, looks the goods. You can just tell with some players and I reckon he’s got it. Murphy has skills.
Trainer into Kirbs that’s it’s no time to rest and encouraging him to pick one off. He won the ball in several contests but was caught just as quickly. Conditioning looked OK, in horse racing parlance, better for the run. He’s not a 1st up campaigner, more of a 2nd / 3rd up.

Bucks not happy with some of players during the drills where they were out of position. There seemed to be a set time to get into position for stoppage / kick-in. If not it resulted in a free-kick / turnover. It at least gave some sense of urgency to the drills which at times lacked intensity. At times the field kicking was just plain ordinary.

There was plenty of calls of ‘elite’ though when someone did hit targets in the drills or did something special by foot. That’s clearly where they want to be. Maynard I thought was the biggest improver on the foot skills front, really nailed some passes. Conditioning wise he couldn’t be faulted.

A lot of the drills I saw were based on defensive lines and breaking the lines. Suspect we’ll see us take the game on more but it’ll be frustrating at times, there will be some clangers.

Fas doesn’t look far away. Was on lap duty but was putting in. Howe was running laps too, maybe a slight niggle.

Just prior to them coming in the had kicking on goal practice which clearly looked like they had a bet with the trainers or a reward of some sort. They just kept bombing them through. It was pretty funny as the tension built as they moved past 10 straight shots, might have been more. It was like the last quarter 22nd May Round 9 v’s Adelaide for a moment!

Vicky Park, your pre-season hair revue will include Aish – maybe some fresh tips, a man bun / pony tail hybrid. Broomhead has been using the Dimoxinil over the Summer, just a magnificent mane. But they’re a mile behind Ben Crocker and Adam Oxley. Clearly cutting their own hair, or each other's. Either that or a touch of mange. Just some shocking coiff’s.

Guess No Change with our Skills being Below Average Still

I like the support given to our new boy, who is a mature ager, but until I see him at AFL level I'm inclined to think he's depth. But wish him well.
Scharenberg just has so much poise. He's working up to nice levels, still awhile to go, but progressing finally.

His Problem is he does drop a lot of Marks as he Nearly Marks them

Great report Ted Parker and any report that include well structured greyhound parlance and horse racing parlance is just going to elite levels.

To put it in racing terms, top run, won easing up. Has lengths on the others. Will be favourite next start.

Great report thanks but how dare you call Kirby a campaigner.:D

It was a collective effort! But it was outside of our 'core mids' thankfully. Adams and De Goey were loose at times.

Varcoe definitely playing higher, would expect to see him there more often in 2018, along with Wells.
While Murray or Appleby will be given their chance, initially it'll be Crisp who goes back. That'll also release Scharenberg to play a different role. Chance they'll interchange?

Thx for the heads up.:)

Can’t say I like what I see on the back of Crocker’s and Oxley’s heads. Looks more like a wild animal than anything deserving the name of ‘hair do’. The Xmas break is always a concern. Seems to give them some kind of licence to do ridiculous things to their hair.

Now I have pretty dodgy vision with anything past a 7 iron out,

This report was great and won me over early.

Especially the 2 lines above

"positively fizzing at the bunghole in anticipation". I'm not 100% certain I needed to know that but thought it a brave admission anyway.

Love it that you can hit anything from 6 iron up out of sight

Well done

Cheers Ted Parker

From the sounds of it there's about 1/3 of the team that are just natural trainers and who consistently put in. Then there's another 1/3 who are still finding their feet. The last 1/3 are able to produce magic but seem too up-and-down in their application. If we can somehow get their 'worst' above the line we will be a much better team. JDG is one of these last 1/3 - when I saw him last week he was really in the mix and putting in hard yards. He may have been on cruise control for a number of reasons yesterday, but when he consistently puts himself into 3rd and 4th gear we will have a winner.

Thanks Ted Parker . A great and informative read. No sign of Tom Phillips? He was missing the other day and just wondering what the issue is with him.

As a noted poor trainer I can related to the struggle some have putting in every session over a long preseason. Hated anything that didn't involve some kind of competition.

Put a ball in front of me and I will chase it all day like a dog. Get me running laps and other menial tasks forget it.

Not everyone will be an elite trainer, but we need individual programs to get the best out of each player.
