Imagine young Kirby is reading this....

He'd feel the love.
He'd feel the encouragement.
He'd feel the support.

But don't worry if (when) he's comes good, the band wagon will be very crowded with the back slappers.

Disagree with you on this one SV. You train how you play and like all supporters who critique a player's game on the weekend, people are rightly questioning his application to training.

With a time like that I'd say Elliott would have beaten him on crutches.

But would Elliott have beaten his own previous 2km TT effort or been further than 9 seconds behind it?

Other than running a TT 9 seconds slower than his previous effort, training reports have made little mention of this actual overall training other than to commend his efforts in completing every task so a pretty long bow.

Correction:
In light of the discussion over KK's time, I went back to have another look at his run on Monday. The problem arose because the trainer did not call out Kirby's time; probably so as not to broadcast it. Today I timed the difference between Sam McLarty's time 7:16 and set the timer unti Kirby crossed the line. It brings Kirby's time down to 8'10" which makes that a difference of +5 since first day of training in November.

Like Wells, Kirby turned up for training out of shape last year. And like Degoey, their actions (or inaction in their case) let the club down. So of course their training habits are going to be under the microscope the next time around. In this case the reports are that Wells was at the Centre training months before preseason and seen running on his days off. The reports on Kirby are that for whatever reason he is slower than before xmas. It warrants discussion on his training. Obviously personal shots are crossing the line.

F*rk me - if he's kicking goals, laying tackles, getting multiple shots on goal, being in the right spots the majority of the time - who cares how fast he does a 2 km time trial. His job is to kick goals and that should be his focus - kicking goals!
There is a certain element on BF who glory in anything that is negative, such is life.

Are we really arguing over 5 seconds over a 2km distance?

That is like a 1% difference in his time. Could've been any number of factors to influence such a small change.

Lets leave it to the club to judge how his training is going. He clearly is coming from a long way back, and have a lot of work to do, but I think until NAB cup starts (or whatever dumb version the AFL is going with this year) we wont have any accurate way to compare how prepared he is for the AFL game.

Last time I checked he wasn’t doing most of that at senior level. Because he wasn’t fit enough to keep up. I guess it’s fine if you’re happy with him just doing that stuff at VFL level though...

The point being that clubs, unlike a certain cohort of fans, put these numbers into context.

Question marks over Rayners endurance and aerobic capacity (let alone a desire to leave Brissy) where not enough to stop the Lions taking him with Pick 1.

Kirby is no Rayner, but he also is no Pick 1. He is almost effectively just a rookie on the main list (given his draft pick and place on the list) and should be judged as such.

Re Kirby.

If he makes it he makes it.

if he doesn't make it, he doesn't make it.

Like most things, it will be determined by his actions and the "luck" if 22 others are in front of him.
No doubt he'll be given all possibilities and opportunities and guidance.
Up to him.

He does display talent, now it's up to him.

With that in mind, a General critique is fine, go for it.
Personally I'm not into the merciless bagging of younger players or players in general.
I'm more into focusing on the positive and encouraging improvement sometimes even understanding why some set backs happen.

Acknowledging Football is a ruthless business. Today you're here tomorrow you're gone.

Overall that's just my man management style, and we all have different styles.

Fantastic reading the various assessments of time trial performances and what they mean for some of our team. My two cents - I wonder what sort of times Fyfe, Dangerfield, Martin, Franklin and other top 10 in the game players run in their time trials, and I would rather Josh Smith use his endurance to stay away from the football that he has no idea what to do with when he gets it.

Kk was always a project player on fitness. Going to take 2 preseasons to improve. If next year he cannot get to 7.30 or less then supportors can be worried.
Could not run one last year, has completed two this year so big improvement there, and l expect the same next year.
2km is for an athlete is a sprint. Unfortunately Kirby is not.

I reckon he would have much of our list covered for many athletic attributes: speed, strength, leap...

If you put that way, you are right, but not continuously running though.

He may do but can he still produce all of those things by midway through the 3rd quarter when his direct opponent is starting to run circles around him?

I'm just pointing out that I wouldn't describe him as unathletic. To me, guys like Oxley and Shaz, who aren't strong in any physical departments are the ones that I'd describe as unathletic. I'd call Kirby an explosive athlete who has to significantly improve his endurance
