The session yesterday was mainly made up of small groups of 8-10 players all spread out around the ground.

Divided between mids, backs, kids and forwards each group had 5-6 non playing personnel around them. Skills were the focus. Stoppages, forward ball movement and goal kicking, accurate ball use over 15-20m or ground fielding and tackling.

While Wednesday isn't there main session it was obvious there had been a change. A lot more coaching within small groups with focus on each players roles within the team.

Good to get real time micro-view and to be able to give feedback on the spot and go again rather than reviewing footage.

He was the best field kick I've seen play the game bar none.

Absolutely, can anyone name another player since Buckley who consistently kicks 40-50m bullet passes on either foot that hit the target nearly all the time.

I can barely think of anyone who can kick a 40m bullet pass with the speed Buckley did let alone with accuracy

I was thrashed from the starting gate at Jolimont Station by a grey haired chap who was in the same carriage as me. He made it a good 90 seconds before me. Disappointing as I've worked hard the last 4 weeks.

Don't be too hard on yourself.
How did the grey haired chap go last year, indeed how did you go last year?

That obvious? Hasn’t been mentioned this off-season and no injury news either. It grinds my gears that a guy like Blair gets slagged off, but by and large this guy escapes the same level of criticism.

Again though it’s SUBJECTIVE it is not black and white.

I don’t agree with the POV, but I can at least acknowledge that because it involves the surname Daicos it automatically makes it taboo with some so I’m out.

I don't think it's that subjective, when he has stand out attributes like his kicking, decision making, agility or step, weaves in trafic etc.. Even prior to the draft you saw he had "talent" but lacked consistency of output.

It's a strange one, if they had of said he lacks the desire or work ethic to make it then that would of been different. But lacking talent when he is clearly skilled is a very odd one as they tend to go hand in hand and it's something that everyone who has eyes can see.

I am disappointed for Mazzarjo. He makes all the effort to attend and produce quality training reports and we collectively turn the discussion to shit. Think this thread deserves better than the current discussion.

I take offence if you think my input today was disrespectful to Mazzajo in any way.

I love what that bloke offers this forum and what Blair "has" offered our Club.

As do most. The discussion resulted from
calling out poster’s disrespect of the character of a player based on speculation and innuendo. I don’t see how it in any way reflects on how people perceive Mazzarjo and the quality of his reporting in any way, which is top notch and an asset to this board.

I also have no problem with posters discussing what Blair brings to the table as a footballer. FWIW I agree that there is limited scope to improve with him in the side and other options should probably be explored in preference to him in 2018.

Any Matt Scharenerg news this pre-season?

Love the kid, huge talent and stoked he had a clean run at it in 2017.

Could be a huge year for him.
From all reports has had a clean run on it, last time he was mentioned there was discussion about whether he’d make it or not and a lot of bickering about his 2km time trial being in the same kind of zone as Mason Cox’s.

But I definitely hope he comes on, he seems to be developing as a great reader of the play and is an asset behind the ball.

He will make it I have no doubt.

Bucks needs to play him from R1 if fit, he will come on in leaps and bounds this year.

Word is he will be playing more a key back role this year. So it will be interesting to see how that goes for him. Looking forward to watching hopefully play a bit more freely this year.

From the very brief snippets I've seen, he certainly looks classy, but he's never gotten much of the ball at any level, so I can understand why one of his peers would feel he hasn't earnt his spot on the list and would suggest he lacks talent.

I still wonder if his name was Josh Jones would he even be on an AFL list?

Kid has shown he's got the talent despite his limited physique so he'd likely be on a list somewhere. Perhaps a more pertinent question is did we pay too much? Come back in 5-6 years and I'll answer that but initial impressions suggest no.

Hello Joff
Kirby looks in pretty good nick and has been working hard during all of the sessions I have seen. He has no tank but he probably doesn't need one. His go will be the crumbing forward and the run-down tackler. He is certainly in much better shape than this time last year.

Yeah I think thats right. Players like Kirby needs less endurance and more explosiveness. Its partly why the beep was done away with because for a lot of player positions it isn't that relevant. I'd be more interested in Kirby ability over 20m and his repeat numbers.

You can't hide anywhere on the field these days. I just worry that he lacks the professionalism to be an AFL player.

8 mins over 2000 is very slow. I don't expect Phillips type figures I just expect him not to be lapped and embarrassed. It's only 4 and a half laps. He should be wiping 10 seconds off his time every time he goes out there coming from the low base he started at.

Yeah it aint a great time but I heard Sanderson say he was going well so lets see how he progresses. For mine the issue is as much he is a player who has aspirations to play middle and those times won't cut it for that.

Do you remember pre-season 2015 when Freeman was referred to as an unwrapped Christmas present by one of the best recruiters in the game? Around that exact time I spoke with someone who point blank said he’s no good. The same bloke said the exact same stuff about Toumpas who is also clearly skilled, but lacks talent.

It’s a subjective view and just because you completely disagree does not change that.

In trying to tidy up this thread, a bunch of Blair posts (at least I think they are mostly Blair posts) have been moved to here.
Thanks and sorry for having been a major contributor to it getting out of hand. :(

No worries.:thumbsu:

And further to the above, I have also moved about 100 posts from this thread which followed northpie's rather alarming post about...what was it about again? To here.

Toumpas lacked pace (and wasn't adept inside the contest against the bigger bodies) which found him out at the top level not lacking in overall talent, a bit like Aish really in a lot of ways (in terms of having no stand out weapons and lacking pace although I rate aish higher).

Freeman is no good because his hammys are no good not because he lacks talent to play the game.

Skill goes hand in hand with talent, typically if you see someone very skilled you would say they have talent.

The rest are athletic traits, desire to succeed (Toumpas questionable here), ability to win the ball. etc.

Yes as I said inconsistent output. Has been a 15 -25 possession winner typically, which with his skill can certainly impact a game. It doesn't suggest he lacks in talent it says he needs to lift his work rate to get to more contest.
